I'm from North Carolina and you can definetly tell the educated accents from the uneducated accents. Yet, it has more to do with your grammar than anything. I cringe whenever I hear someone use a double negative (I ain't got none). I can understand where the prejudice, but it is entertaining...

Yes they are different. Putting accent to one side, there are differences in vocabulary, spelling and grammar. Of course we can understand each other and any differences in vocab can sometimes lead to a humorous situation, but they are different.
