If you have a question about whether a specific word should be capitalized that doesn't fit under one of these rules, try checking a dictionary to see if the word is capitalized there.

Use capital letters in the following ways:

The first words of a sentence

When he tells a joke, he sometimes forgets the punch line.

The pronoun "I"

The last time I visited Atlanta was several years ago.

Proper nouns (the names of specific people, places, organizations, and sometimes things)

Worrill Fabrication Company

Golden Gate Bridge

Supreme Court

Livingston, Missouri

Atlantic Ocean

Mothers Against Drunk Driving

Family relationships (when used as proper names)

I sent a thank-you note to Aunt Abigail, but not to my other aunts.

Here is a present I bought for Mother.

Did you buy a present for your mother?

The names of God, specific deities, religious figures, and holy books

God the Father

the Virgin Mary

the Bible

the Greek gods

Moses

Shiva

Buddha

Zeus

Exception: Do not capitalize the non-specific use of the word "god."

The word "polytheistic" means the worship of more than one god.

Titles preceding names, but not titles that follow names

She worked as the assistant to Mayor Hanolovi.

I was able to interview Miriam Moss, mayor of Littonville.

Directions that are names (North, South, East, and West when used as sections of the country, but not as compass directions)

The Patels have moved to the Southwest.

Jim's house is two miles north of Otterbein.

The days of the week, the months of the year, and holidays (but not the seasons used generally)

Halloween

October

Friday

winter

spring

fall

Exception: Seasons are capitalized when used in a title.

The Fall 1999 semester

The names of countries, nationalities, and specific languages

Costa Rica

Spanish

French

English

The first word in a sentence that is a direct quote

Emerson once said, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."

The major words in the titles of books, articles, and songs (but not short prepositions or the articles "the," "a," or "an," if they are not the first word of the title)

One of Jerry's favorite books is The Catcher in the Rye.

Members of national, political, racial, social, civic, and athletic groups

Green Bay Packers

African-Americans

Anti-Semitic

Democrats

Friends of the Wilderness

Chinese

Periods and events (but not century numbers)

Victorian Era

Great Depression

Constitutional Convention

sixteenth century

Trademarks

Pepsi

Honda

IBM

Microsoft Word

Words and abbreviations of specific names (but not names of things that came from specific things but are now general types)
One thing that you should start to work on right away is to NOT use text message abbreviations like "ur" instead of "your" and to make sure you use a capital letter at the start of your sentences and for the word I.

(And thanks to Avangi, I realized I forgot to welcome you to English Forums.)

(And lastly, I make a lot of spelling mistakes too, and I write for a living. That's why we have editors.)

Also, although personally I am not familiar with "reduplication," it sounds like the Linguistics section is the appropriate place for your post -- you don't need to "reduplicate" it in General English Grammar Questions and Basic English Grammar.

Re: Please all comments on title and thesis are welcome

Anon, first of all, please never post in all capital letters. It's hard to read and feels like you're shouting at us.

Secondly, I hope this doesn't sound "mean," but you are heavy with buzzwords, to the point where it almost reads like a joke.

Don't use an abbreviation in your title. Wait until you are in the body to do that.

However, there are two big problems. The first is easily solved, and that is to provide conext for the Lower Liesbeek in the entire thing. Is it part fo the TRUP? How does the TRUP fit into "a sustainably working park"? It sounds like TRUP is a subset of the big idea of a park, and the LL is a subset of TRUP, but it's not clear.

Your bigger problem is this. You want a holistic and integrated plan, but then you want to divide everything up into divisions with a management plan for each division. That's a complete contradiction, unless you can show how each piece is part of the greater whole.

Re: When I use the CAPITAL letters for all word not only for first letter.
Use all-capitals only for acronyms and similar abbreviations: NASA, NASDAQ, USA, OPEC.

Re: Is the internet destroying the English language?

Cuckoosnest wrote:

IMHO, dis iz a sine of da destruction of our written language, but im obviously biased on da issue. so wat do u think? iz dis sumthin we shud b ashamed of, or has ben franklins dream of a simpler english language finally cum of age?

This one did make me laugh my head off. I mean, the manner you wrote it in (all those diz, iz, da, etc).

Cuckoosnest wrote:

Timbo20 wrote:

...and this forum, for instance, is not notorious for it "abbreviate-writers", i barely saw the "short-but-false-english" here, and it´s the same in many other forums (but forums for gamers).

Well, to be fair, you did just write an entire post without a single capital letter.

This is what I was thinking about, too, while reading the post.

I'm not a native speaker, but I hate it when people start being so lazy that can't even make an effort to write in English properly. Maybe someone thinks it's cool and modern to use those abbreviations and acronyms, but I think it's just a sign of disrespect to people to whom we talk (e.g. 'hu r u?').

As to me, I use abbreviations such as BTW and BRB while chatting only, when I really have the lack of time, and sometimes I use IMO or IMHO in forums, but very seldom.

Cuckoosnest, you know, some chat rooms try to incline members to write in a proper way. For example, the team of moderators at The Chat Page may sometimes ban users for a persistent manner to write carelessly. Rarely, but it happens. So, you're not the only one who doesn't like that way of using English.

Re: Is the internet destroying the English language?

Timbo20 wrote:

first, you are of course right that this false grammar shouldn´t be used everywhere. computer games and chatrooms, that´s all right.

Yeah, it's perfect and sensible is chat rooms and instant messages. Even I use it for that.

but in forums like this one, i hate to see that stuff, because for me (not a native english speaker nor a addicted to videogames player) it is occasionally hard to even get the message of what is written.

It can sometimes leave me a bit confused as well if used too excessively.

but at which point i disagree with you, is that because of internet the english language would be going down the drain, so to say. i held, that internet makes english even better and more important, because lots of people are reading and writing more in english than before. even friends of mine, who´re not that capable of the language are doing this and get better as time passes by.

Well, that's an excellent point-- one I would never have thought of, being a native English speaker.

...and this forum, for instance, is not notorious for it "abbreviate-writers", i barely saw the "short-but-false-english" here, and it´s the same in many other forums (but forums for gamers).

Well, to be fair, you did just write an entire post without a single capital letter.

No, but seriously, you're right, it's not rampant on any serious forums, but it does pop up fairly often, enough so to make one forum I visited ban the use of it.

I guess it's just a peeve of mine.

Re: Some help please

Start by always using proper English when you post here.
