I have been teaching English as a second language for over 10 years - in South Korea, Japan, and in my home country of Canada. I was raised in an English-speaking family so my accent is a native speaker's accent.

I really want to continue teaching ESL but I can't leave my country right now. So I am thinking about doing one-on-one lessons via msn or skype, and ask the students to pay via paypal.

What do you think of this idea?

Do you know of anyone who has also tried this? Were they successful?

Do you have suggestions as to how to find students?

All suggestions welcome!

Re: American Accent Training!

Hi Nympha,

I sent an email to Arvin and Eric a few days ago through this website --- but then I realized that their emails were dated a few months back so I dont know if they'll be reading our emails soon.

Unfortunately, accent reduction trainng cannot be done by reading books alone - you'd have to work with someone who already speaks English with the American accent. Verbal language learning is an audio experience. I've lived in the US for 22 years and I'm finishing up my ESL (teaching English as a Second Language) Certification at Berkeley University, California, USA. I'm curious, how much would you and others who may want to speak in American English (say for a call center job); be willing to pay for a 4-week accent reduction training program? Each session will be 4 hours per day for 4 weeks.

Thanks for your reply.

My name is Carol W. I'm currently finishing-up my certification on ESL (teaching English as a Second Language) at Berkeley University, CA. In the past 10 years, I've had a couple of successful businesses that made me travel between the Philippines (and other parts of Asia) and the US. Recently, Ive been studying the trends of the Call Centers in the Philippines. I'm married to an american and I've lived in the US for 22+ years. My American accent is pretty good but I would like to formalize my speaking skills. I was in Manila for 15 days in April to early May to do a market research on my business of interest and I will go back there in a few weeks to start it off (along with a couple of business partners). I will be the CEO of our operations. Part of our network for this business will be DOT (Dept of Tourism) and PCVC (the international arm of DOT) - these agencies conducted a Job Fair on April 6, 2006 in Manila, Cebu and Davao and the Call Center who participated at the Job Fair didnt have much success. So my connections at DOT and PCVC are very supportive of my business idea.

I'm very sure that we could work together on some level, would you be interested to communicate with me about that? I may need your help on the accent reduction program.

Best regards,

If one has been an English teacher in schools and has dealt with syllabi on literature and language - can it translate to the learning of phonetics and accent training to second language users? Can one teach others to 'communicate' in English by having been a teacher?

What is required to effectively bring an intermediate class of students to an advanced level in the language, and also to get them to speak better to an international audience?

Could you please prescribe syllabi, activities and important considerations to improve one's communication skills in English? Thanks in advance.

Re: American Accent Training!

Hi Malloren

I agree with some of you that the accent is not very good but not all the learners. 10 years ago, the most prominent foreign language is Russian and now it is English. French is studied and well used by a lot of people here for nearly 100 years. Anyway, things are changing, and the accent is being improved. So I myself believe that the pronunciation problem will be sorted out.

cheers,
Re: Learning and teaching English in Vietnam

I personally think its all up to the person whether they want willing enough to go the extra miles of learning their language and culture. i'm viet as well, born in New Zealand, yet my accent is as great as a native vietnamese ... the difficulties I have are the vocabulary and all the jargons that they use! I agreed that the english accent in Viet is not as great...i guess its becaust they (native viets) don't speak english at a daily basis. I'm off to Vietnam in June to teach English at my friends English school (owned and operated by Native viets) - can you imagine the teachers' accent there. Being exposed to the Thais who after having had English lessons from their Thai English teachers for many years it is frustrating for anyone to try to converse with the vast majority of them, because they simply cannot participate in a very simple conversation.

The problem starts here: governments like this, Thailand is just one example, undertake no effort whatsoever to encourage teachers to come to their country and teach their English teachers. Because, believe me, all those countries lack local English teachers who can s p e a k the language as it is spoken. I'm not talking about accents, like the Malaysian, Singaporian or Indian English accents.

A concerted effort on a global scale is needed to address this problem. Yes, English is the global link for everything imaginable. The key is: everybody must become bilingual and the world will become a much easier place for all of us.

I am thinking of setting up an organization which will in time lobby all governments to strive to implement standard rules in their national educational system to make English compulsory for every child from grade 1 on. This alone will bring no success as long as the governments do not agree that native, qualified English teachers are brought in to instruct their local teachers until everyone of them is 100% proficient. I alone am not able to do such a mammoth task, so I'm looking for people who could come up with ideas and comments. When I say comments, I mean positive, constructive comments.

It is about time to start, what do you all think?

Cheers from the Land of Smiles...
