I believe there are several participants in this study, Tidus, so the apostrophe is correctly placed in the original. However, if there is only one, then it will require an article (a, the) as well as the apostrophe change.

Also note that it is "participant's" - the apostrophe goes before the 's' in both instances in the paragraph.
