The initial sentence itself is not quite correct.
Children is already plural which means that no -s is needed
-s isn't needed in the verb as well since the subject is in the plural
i.e. Children make mistakes in (an article?) dark

To my ear, they sound better with the articles, but you need to give at least one whole sentence to provide context when you ask this kind of question. CJ
