I'll be really glad if somebody checks my motivation letter draft too. I've gone through this forum and copied some ideas and even senteces into that. I'm not sure if I can ask you also for grammar correction, but if somebody correct (maybe "fills in" is more appropriate, plenty of them are missing <img src="/emoticons/emotion-1.gif" alt="Smile [:)]" /> the articles and tenses, I'll really appreciate that. With this letter I wish to explain my interest for taking part in PhD project "***" which is proposed by the *** team.

I believe my motivation for applying for the position can be better understood considering my study path so far. I started my bachelor studies of Computer Science at *** Faculty of *** University in *** with clear intention to continue with master studies at the same place. After completing my bachelor degree I've chosen a specialization on Software Systems. From the beginning of my master studies I've been focusing on the field of formal methods in software development and especially on model-checking. During that stage I won the scholarship for excellent study results and finally I got my master degree this January with overall grade 1.

While working on my master thesis focused on model-checking of concurrent systems, I decided to get deeper knowledge in the field of formal verification and software reliability. I started to look for research groups and laboratories concentrating on these topics. To get broader survey in the area of formal verification I started to attend a seminar, where many scientists focused on this topic present their current results. I also attend an intensive everyday course of French since September to reach at least basic level of the language.

My choice of my former university and faculty was based on general belief that this institution is the most challenging and provides the education of the highest quality in my country. This fact helped me to make my best while studying there. But now I appreciate an opportunity to focus on an exciting research topic even more than high demands imposed on students. I consider the *** group to be both the great challenge and the place of projects exactly corresponding to my research interests. I think of that as of opportunity to get broader view of formal methods and security and to take part in the top-class research project with exciting goals.

I'm convinced that I can contribute to the above-mentioned project because of the experience gained from my master thesis and during my master studies. In my work I dealt with model-checking, implementation of temporal logic, formal specification, modeling language design, semantics and translation. I believe that I can apply my knowledge of program verification in your project and that it is an excellent opportunity to get an expertise in the field of my utmost interest. I consider program verification and reliability being crucial for further development of software industry and I definitely want to take part in research of this area. From my part I have no doubts about my motivation and commitment and I believe that I am a suitable candidate for this PhD position.

- Is it right to say "Assistant PhD teacher" to indicate a job as assistant teacher for which a PhD degree is required (not a job as assistant teacher for PhD students). Not a term that is used in the UK. It would probalby be termed "Assistant Teacher. This post requires a PhD or equivalent."

- Another question about prepositions: does one play an instrument in an orchestra?   Yes

- Is it right to say something like "2003: beginning of studies of x"? "began studies relating to...."/"started studies of...."

- Could anyone tell me where I can find the "official" names of the subjects in a music degree? Or, more specifically, I need to know the name of a subject in which the different musical forms and structures are studied. Hi,

your letter has many flaws:

1. way too long for a covering letter,

2. your motivation isn't clear after all

3. the letter isn't coherent

4. the letter repeads a bit the information given in the CV. In order to write a good letter you have to pick the points from the CV which fullfil the application criteria

Under this circumstances I have trouble to correct it. Take a good example and write it completely new. I suspekt that the current letter is a translation from your mother tongue. Seek for a good example through the Internet.

I study Modern Applied Languages (LEA) at the UniversitÃ© de Bretagne Occidentale in Brest and I am currently looking for a 3-month work placement in a British translation company. This work placement will be the conclusion of my Bachelor.

My courses range from English and German to economics and law. I also passed a scientific Baccalaureate (the equivalent of the British A-Level): I had the chance to attend many different kinds of courses which is an advantage in translation.

I already had the occasion to see what the translatorâs job consists of. For example, I translated articles and lyrics for a bandâs fan site. In my courses in France, I had different translation courses (translation from French to English or from English to French, consecutive interpretingâ¦). I spent the second year of my degree abroad in Germany where I attended a German-English translation course.

Next year, I will apply for a master in translation either in France or abroad.

I am OR I would be available for this work placement from the 15^th February and am always available for further questions or for a possible interview.

All the books/publications are campaign books or policy papers (not a conventional research - I work with non-profit NGOs). And also they were written by teams, I was doing the writing in some parts and compiling and putting things together then some editing (with other editors/supervisor) and translation work - can I still put them in my list of publications? How shall I explain that?- I plan to add brief explanations of my bits in the next line under the name/reference to the publication, is it practicable?

Could you perhaps put "Contributor" or "Contributing Editor" in front of the reference

How about inserting "Various contributors." between title and publisher

I've got 2 problems with how to write a list of my publications in my CV (to apply for a Master courses in Europe).

Three-good student/triple-A student/model student

Hello, I'm thinkin of editing a small part of my CV.

I was awarded with the honor of three-goods student last year. Three-good student is a literal translation, meaning good morals, hard study and sporting excellence.

But I'm not satified with this, I translated it as a triple-A student.

Model student is more idiomatic, but I guess it is too general.

So I guess I would still use triple-A student, with some short explanation after it. What about this version:

Triple-A student of the academic year 2004-2005 (in terms of moral integrity, academic records and health)?

Thank you so much for your kind time. Your suggestion is very helpful, I have realized the problem, too. No one would feel like reading such a long letter.

You said in the reply that donât repeat the same information in the CV, so first of all, shall I delete paragraph [1]? I put it there just wanted to give the reader an overall image, but all the information could be found in my CV. I didnât mention the duty ( in paragraph [2]) and the example ( in paragraph [4]) in my CV, may I keep them?

I tried to shorten the letter, but it is still too long. I am not sure which part shall be modified. Would you look at it again? Please give me more suggestions. Thank you for your time.

[2]-University and Master courseâs study
