The meaning is mostly clear but the structure of the document is not so obvious from the fragment you've posted, and the English could be tidied up in a couple of places.

Please see my update in my Excel sheet. [It's not very clear to me how this statement relates to what follows. In the context of the whole document it might be fine though. Unless you're sure that readers will know which Excel sheet you're referring to, it might be a good idea to be a bit more specific.]

Title: Number of indexes to have in each database table

Contents: ["Contents" usually introduces a list of section headings. Here it seems to be followed by the actual text of the explanation, which is odd. It may be that "Summary" is the word you want.] Having more indexes [delete comma] will certainly slow down the processing on the tables [delete comma] when INSERTING/UPDATING records. How to do you judge ~~(or consider)~~ this on the 10g [I'd normally expect this to be "10G", but if in your context it's conventionally written "10g" then fine] version (~~that means~~ 10th generation version) database? Is it a better choice to have ~~4/5 table indexes only~~ only four or five indexes per table? [I assume that you mean 4 or 5 per table?]

You have problems with spacing around punctuation, and you have spurious double spaces in a number of places. I have corrected these below.

The other changes that I made to the date formats are not because what you had was wrong, but just to make them all consistent.

Dear colleagues,

This year the company is to organize a vacation trip for all employees to Mui Ne Beach, about 200 km ~~away~~ ["away" is not necessarily wrong, but I think the sentence reads better without it] from the city center. Those who would like to join the trip should register with Miss Perry by February 15, 2008.

The trip is scheduled to leave for Mui Ne Beach [comma deleted] on July 15, 2008 and ~~come back~~ return ["come back" is not wrong, but I think "return" is better] to the city on March 5, 2008. [The return date is earlier than the departure date!]

[Your capitalisation is a bit random in places. The changes I suggested in this respect are an attempt to make it more consistent, with the headings capitalised (in a standard style) and the individual points not capitalised unless proper nouns.]

I just spotted a couple of typos (probably), one double space, and a couple of places where I'd use commas.

I was expecting your email, Jane; I am glad to receive it. I have one question though: did you decide on your wedding date? Are you marrying the dashing fellow you were with at our high school reunion a few weeks ago? If that's him, you are a lucky girl. He looked so nice and, on top of that, he looked so gentlemanly. Please let me know the details. Bye.

Proper punctuation in emails is to be commended, and you should punctuate them just as you would any other piece of text. For dashes I often use two hyphens (--), as you have. (Not only are proper dashes a pain to enter, but I'm never entirely confident that they will be rendered correctly in whatever system the recipient is using.)

Many "-ly" words are adverbs, but "gentlemanly" is an adjective. The way you've used it is fine -- just as "he looked so handsome" is fine. What you can't say is something like "he looked at me gentlemanly" (intended to mean "in the manner of a gentleman") because this sentence needs an adverb (as in "he looked at me cautiously").

Please check comma usage in the above sentence.

Do we need hyphen in "presidential-candidate-to-be"? Please clarify.

Do we need serial comma before "and offered bathing facilities"? Please clarify.

I am about as British as you are Finnish. However, I do know that there's much more variety in writing the date in BrE than in AmE. Many Brits do use th in running text the way you indicate, but not all. Some put the day before the month, some put it after the month the way Americans almost invariably do. It has become fashionable in recent years to even leave out the comma: April 10 2008. This is how a respectable newspaper called The Guardian writes the date even in running text. I think quite a few elderly Brits find it a little odd, though.

I think this might be very broad of a topic to introduce but hope you will be able to help me.

What puzzles me is the structure of the content of a word or phrase that comes after a comma which seems to give details about something before it.

John has two big hands with five fingers on each one.

Now, I think you could also write this sentence:

1. John has two big hands, one short and one long.

2. John, tall and thin, has two big hands. -- Obviously, I think a person could say 'tall and thin' can be wiritten fully as 'who is tall and thin' and the absence ot those words are OK -- I agree.

But no. 1 is what makes me wonder. What is the guideline as to what form it can assume? Sure,I think the content should elucidate or give details to the one before but are there any constraints as to how it should be written?

It's a style issue, but you should try to avoid breaking the date at the end of the line if you can. I forget the ascii code for a hard space, but you can put one before the numeral in the datea and between the comma and the year, and it will treat the entire block as one word and not break it. In very narrow columns of text, it will be hard to avoid it.

Q2 - Whether a comma is needed before a conjunction depends on the particular sentence, especially on the length and complexity. Strictly speaking, start a new sentence for both of your original examples.

Q3 -

1: Yes, the security deposit is refundable within six years, otherwise it shall be forfeited. It's often written this way, but I'd start a new sentence if I wanted to write carefully.

2: Yes, the security deposit is refundable within six years and after that it will be forfeited. OK

3: Yes, the security deposit is refundable within six years after the date of deposit but otherwise it will be forfeited. OK
