It was something to do with the processing of characters like commas and spaces and so forth in the names of the pictures. When you get to 2007, you have so many things that a bulleted list might be better. Good luck with your scholarship application.

OBJECTIVE : DON KNOW WHAT TO WRITE…(please advise) Only you know what your objectives are. What do you want to study? Why do you want to study it? My 8 year old has an abiding passion for sharks and wants to go to college to study marine biology so she can go on to study sharks in their natural setting. What do YOU want to do?

If there were no children, the world and our lives both would be colourless (and ) meaningless and soulless.

Generally speaking, I agree with a comma after each item but not before the final 'and'. Some people will also put a comma before 'and'. Just be consistent in how you do it.

If you include the 'and' in the above example, it strongly emphasises each item and its separateness from the others. It's an uncommon literary device, so I advise you not to do that.

There are also lists where 'and' is a part of a particular item. eg I like pizza, fish and chips, hamburgers and ice-cream. These need to be punctuated carefully.

Best wishes, Clive

Re: Punctuation (Period or Comma or ...?)

Hi,

They are the beginning of life or, as Wordsworth put it, “the child is the father of the man”(.) the origin and the future.

Definitely don't put a period there. If you must leave the sentence as written, put a comma.

However, the quotation sits awkwardly in the middle of the sentence. In addition, the sentence has three 'parts' and there is duality in parts two and three but not in part one. I suggest something like -

They are the beginning and the later stage (the end?) of life, or the origin and the future. As Wordsworth put it, “the child is the father of the man”.

I thought Wordsworth actually wrote "The child is father to the man"?

It seems odd. 'And' functions as a wooden plank over a brook, which helps one to cross the brook without any jerk. If there are more than two entities in a list, we put a comma (,) after each entity, but the one before the last one, since it is followed by 'and'.
For example, The lady in black looks very gorgeous, stunning, fascinating, elegant and attractive.

But I have often noticed 'and' written more than once. Could someone also tell me what connotations does a list, having more than one 'and', have?

Thanks in anticipation.
