Hello! CHECK SOMEONE MY TRANSLATION OF LYRICS INTO ENGLISH, PLEASE! My friend is a member of music band. He gave my his lyrics (they are short texts) and asked me to translate them into English. But I'm not good enough in English to translate lyrics - I lack knowledge about phraseal verbs, slang and grammar constructions. 1) "Ms.Kate, a friend of her mother's...." (what is the meaning of her mother's here. Shouldn't it be "a friend of her mother or her mother's friend" ?)

This "double genative" is commonly used with people, and particularly in the construction in your example. "her mother's friend" is also fine.

2) What's the meaning of 'ever since' ? E.g.: Ever since he was in the army, he has studied hard;

From the time that... Dating back to the time when...

3) "He lives at 341 Bourboun street apartment 23" (in addresses must the word street be translated from a foreign language into English ? E.g.: In Spain street is 'calle'. In this case when I have to say my address in English do I translate the word 'calle' or not ? E.g.:

Street should be capitalized -- it's the proper name of the street. I would leave it exactly as is. If someone lived at 221 Rue Charlemagne, I would not write it as "Charlemagne Street." As with any proper nouns, leave them as is, unless the entire phrase has its one translation, e.g., The United States = Les Etats Unis. Leave Street (capital S) as Street and calle as calle.

5) What do we call a organized group of soccer fans that goes to a stadium to watch a soccer/football match ? Is it called organized claque or organized supporters ?

I'm not familiar with this. Organized supporters sounds okay. For a rock band, they are called groupies, but I don't know what soccer fans are called.

6) People who stay outside a stadium trying to sell tickets at a higher price than at a ticket office, are they called street peddler of tickets ?

Scalpers. I don't have a ticket. That's okay - as long as you're willing to pay, I'm sure you'll find a scalper who can sell you one.

7) A special service in which the employees' service is to listen (by phone) to citizens general complaints, for instance, about the bad services offered at a stadium, is it called Ombusdman office ?

Ombudsman is indeed the name for such a service, but it's more commonly found (in my experience) in an organization paid for/supported by the patrons/clients, and not in private industry. The government student loan program has an ombudsman; your local bank has customer service. Also, a company can have an ombudsman to hear issues about ethics, etc., from employees. Still, a company can have an ombudsman for the general public if desired.

An example would be, 'The regulation included monthly and hourly rates, daily rates having been omitted.' The five-word phrase at the end of this sentence comprises a participle with its own subject or nominative. I forget why it is called 'absolute'. The only book I know that mentions the construction is R.W. Zandvoort's A Handbook of English Grammar. It is an old book, perhaps not widely used in the English-speaking world (Zandvoort was a Dutchman), but I have seen reference to it in mainland Chinese writings about English. A good city library should have the book. I often use the construction translating, and teaching translation, from Chinese to English. The nature of Chinese is such that I find the construction indispensible. I used it without thinking until, one day, one of my Chinese students questioned its validity. That set me thinking. I justified it as an adverbial phrase qualifying the verb in the preceding clause ('included' in the example above). None of the modern grammars I consulted mentioned it, so I was relieved when I encountered Zandvoort's authoritative discussion. Today, another of my Chinese students told me that she was taught the construction when studying for the English Toeffl exam, and advised to use it, if she could, because its use would indicate an intimate knowledge of English in the writer.

Pine Ends in Sugar

Put a layer of pine ends and a layer of brown sugar one over another into a glass and fill it to the brim. Leave it 3 weeks on the sun, then filter it and drink the syrup as necessary. You can make a tea or refreshing drink out of pine ends. (7.7.2007)

There is a video on Youtube.com that the language is portuguese, a lot of people whom talks English can't understand it without translation. Six people did translate it and I want to know if there are errors on the phrases' construction. I did translate it too, but my English is VERY POOR, so I need your help to understand my errors.

OK. Now I see more clearly what you're asking.

One of the meanings of the true noun is basically the same as the meaning of the gerund.
The other meaning of the true noun is different. It means the result of the activity -- the final product. In this meaning you may find a plural.

translating - the activity of making translations
translation(s) - the result of making translations - the translated document(s)
translation (in the singular only) - the activity of making translations

Constructing a bridge is a large project. (the activity of making a bridge)
Large suspension bridges are remarkable constructions. (the result of making bridges - the bridges themselves)

Defining a word is sometimes difficult. (the activity of producing a definition)
The dictionary contains the definition of that word. (the result of producing a definition - the written definition itself)

I'm assuming that you are talking about cases where both are used as nouns: a true noun (translation) and a gerund (translating).

Whether it's a major or minor mistake to mix them depends on the verb from which the nouns are derived. Sometimes the meanings are very close; sometimes they are very different. Often the true noun takes "the" and "of", and the gerund does not.

The translation of Russian to English is very difficult.
Translating Russian to English is very difficult.

The construction of the bridge took five years.
Constructing the bridge took five years.

Fulton became famous for the invention of the steam boat.
Fulton became famous for inventing the steam boat.

Not sure where you get your info from, Jim, but those are all grammatically correct English constructions. They may not be correct or prefereable in AE, though.

<c. I'll have a drink , then , if you'll have one with me".>

That is the same syntactically as "a". Both sentences express parallel agreement. The speaker in each is checking the listeners willingness to participate. It's volitional, not future.

Hello, I've made a few corrections for you. the highlighted areas also need re-writing - they either do not make sense at all in English (especially the section 'flour..for?' Maybe is one word.Repetition 'dark-dark' or 'big-big' is not used to create an impression of extreme dark or size. You will only see constructions like this in books for very small children as they love the sound and structure of repetition, but it is not used in adult writing.
