Ok, here goes nothing.

I'm a non-native Eng. speaker, but have studied and lived for 20 years in Eng. speaking countries ( I have a native's fluency ).

I'd like to have as many TEFL qualifications as possible. I'm about to start an internet grammar course ( to prepare me for TESOL / CELTA ) while I'm waiting for my visa approval to Oz.

I really would like to have the best (and most) qualifications (courses/certificates/diplomas) out there that can be had in the next 6-8 months period ( it doesn't have to be in Oz).

I'm considering the idea of having "all what is being offered" out there ( from English courses to brush up my English, TESOL/CELTA, Young Learners' extention/s, Business English, CALL, One-on-One, International Exams preparations -preparing students to take TOEFL/TOIEC etc-, Conversation English, DELTA -if possible- or TESOL Diploma -but from a reputible organization/internationally recognized accreditation, ...etc, ...i.e. all that can be acquired in the next 6-8 -or even to 9 - months. I have about a year off from my work/regular life. I'd like to have all these qualification to help me teach English in Japan/Korea while I'm learning either Jap/Kor. next year. I believe having as many qualifications as possible would help to compensate the fact that I'm not a native English speaker, nor hold the passport of an English speaking country).

It's so far been impossible to find one reputable 'place' that provides all what I'm looking for ( ATTC in Australia looks promising, but not that "comprehensive" ).

All suggestions, thoughts, ideas, opinions are welcome.

What "solid" and recognized TEFL qualifications can I obtain in the next 6-8 ( or even - 10) months ( and preferable at the same institution/school ) ?

Thank you very much.....in advance.

actually done, but maybe someone can help me to get it in better shape

hey everyone,

this is my motivation letter for an exchange program. i actually finished it, but i m not quite sure how it sounds like. i can imagine that you are all busy, but maybe someone still can help me with checking for mistakes and style. i would appreciate it a lot.

Dear Ms. ***:

I am writing to apply for a placement at the University of *** in *** via the Erasmus program in the autumn semester in ***.

I graduated from High-School in *** in year ***. During that time I already was focussing on Economics and on English as a business language. The process of globalisation and the increase of interdependence of nations between each other as a result, which entail opportunities as well as threats, has always fascinated me. Hence, I always aimed at forming my study as international as possible, for I was sure to follow an international career in the future. Thus, I took additional courses in business English and obtained my degree in “language correspondent”. I also visited language schools in Great Britain for several weeks and also spent a whole year in the USA. These foreign country experiences, which can hardly be compared to having a vacation in another country, provoked my interest in experiencing new cultures, than merely visiting them. My motivation to continue my studies in the Netherlands was due to the fact that it offered me a more international environment and more opportunities to gain foreign country experience than Germany did.

One reason for my desire to study in *** is that I want to get a better insight into the countries’ economy, where currently a considerable improvement can be witnessed, and gain knowledge about the political system in terms of an international environment. Furthermore, I aspire to become more familiar with the countries’ mentality, their way of thinking and perceiving their world, which differs from that of people with the same nationality living in Europe, to a great extent.

Another very important motive for me, why I intend to study at ***, is that the University is located in the inspiring city of ***, which I unfortunately have never been able to visit so far. The city of *** is eminent, not only because of its significant world economical meaning, but also for its splendid historical background, which reaches back until the ancient Roman Empire.

A further criterion for my decision to study at *** University is also that I had the chance to speak to *** University graduate students, one of them the University’s student counsellor, who are currently studying at out University. Our conversations also confirmed that I made the right choice by choosing *** University. I already got acquainted to quite a lot of *** University students still studying there by my friends here in ***. They already offered me their help, if I should get picked for the exchange.

I am highly motivated to participate in this project, and I will do my utmost to contribute to a prolific cooperation between *** and ***. On the other hand, it also has the right opening for me, since an exchange would have a tremendous benefit for my personal development and the international career I have in mind.

Many thanks in advance and I am looking forward to receive a positive response from your side.

Yours sincerely,

Milan is a beautiful city, there are lots of different things to do and I like living here (I am here, with 3 other girls, since October), above all because I am "indipendent" now, that is without my parents! I'm joking I miss them but I like freedom very much!!! Among the courses of my degree I am attending Business English. This course should prepare me to do the Cambridge exame BEC Higher, I can do it whenever I want, probably the next september or october. (here in Milan I think) It's a bit difficult for me, my English is not so good but I hope to pass it...

and what about you???

Bye! Fede

Ordinary_guy wrote:

Hi Federica,

Of course you can join our conversation. Milan is the fashion capital of italy, isn't it? it must be very exciting to live in such an amazing city. Let's improve our english here together. May be you can share to us what the exam curriculum will be on so we can help you out. Are you going to Cambridge University after take this exam?

Gavin

Re: business slang

CalifJim wrote:

Not all the expressions in your list are restricted to a business context, of course.

You're absolutely right! We hear / use those expressions in many different situations but since most of my students are studying 'Business English' I thought it would be useful to cobble together a list of the ones we do use also in business contexts.

It's amazing how many times I'm asked what something like these expressions mean and then students go on to explain that these instances are the point when they lose the gist in meetings, business conversations or teleconferences because their minds became preoccupied with such an unfamiliar (odd) string of words.

I thought a list, with explanations of the terms, might be useful for others besides my own students.

PS - I think I might have chosen a better thread title for this.
