I was his Korean co-teacher…and we worked closely together during this year.

1. He complied with all school regulations. He understood his roles and responsibilities and fulfilled all of his duties admirably.

2. He has a neat and clean appearance and dressed very well. He was professional in all of his conduct. He has a very good nature and was sensitive to our needs.

3. He was active in class-preparation and came up with many good ideas for our classes. He collaborated with me, his co-worked, to solve any problems that we encountered when students had difficulties. He did his very best to meet the needs of students and to make sure they were satisfied.

4. He dealt with the students very kindly and he was open to listening to the students and to respond to their needs. He has a very good sense of humor and all the students liked him tremendously. They were sad to hear he was leaving us at the end of the year.

5. He was very concerned that students felt they were progressing and learning every day. He taught the students using a variety of teaching styles and methods and he made each class fun and interesting. He has excellent teaching skills and achieved our class purpose, following the lesson plans and teaching objectives.

6. He has a positive attitude and put all of his effort into teaching. He tried to find student’s strong points and to praise everyone he worked with and taught. He is kind, polite, and sociable, so he got along very well with all our other staff members, even though he comes from a culture different to ours.

These things prove his is a good teacher in terms of his teaching ability, personal nature, and the success he achieved in the classroom.
Hello I am new to here. My mother tongue is Cantonese and I like to polish my English.

It's known that English has two different versions : spoken and written. I have been learning English since I was a child and my written English is not too bad because this is what I have to master in order to pass most exams. However, when it comes to speaking in English I often don't know what to say and struggle for words. Though I am in a city where many Englishes live and work in, I hardly make any native friends, what means, I lack an language environment. My problem is:

How can I learn more about the spoken version of English - the way that natives speak? Can you suggest some free online material focusing on spoken English?

Looking forward to your reply.

Hello Patricklui,

I work in an ESL program, and I know that your situation is very common. Some students speak better than they write or read. Some read, and often write, better than they speak. Some are more or less at the same level in everything, but these seem to be rare.

I'd suggest listening to English on the radio and watching some English television, if possible. (Be careful which programs you choose. For one thing, given your location, it may make more sense for you to listen to British English than to listen to North American English. For another thing, some shows aren't much like real conversation.)

Also, when you can, listen to people speaking English around you (possibly on a bus or while you are having something to drink or reading a newspaper someplace.) Do you think these speakers sound like you sound? Do they abbreviate things you might not abbreviate? (example: Want to go? or even Wanta go? versus Do you want to go?) Do they use different inflection (raising and lowering the pitch of their voices) than you usually do? Would you understand a lot of what they said if they slowed down?

**My strongest suggestion is to take a class in conversational English, if you can. Look for a class that focuses on practical communication.** An intensive conversational class (one that meets frequently and for fairly long amounts of time) would be good, if you could manage it. Again, try to find a class that focuses on conversation (not on writing, not on reading, not on reciting long passages, not on learning about literature, not on a combination of these things). Talking, listening, understanding, using, asking questions, learning more.

Another possibility (perhaps hard to find and not cheap) would be a class that focuses on pronunciation. (This is more specific than a class that focuses on conversation.) Still more specific would be working with a speech coach or therapist who focuses on accent reduction. You might not need either of these two. Try other things first.

Spend some more time on this forum, particularly in the areas where you think you need help. I think Www.eslcafe.com is another good forum. See what other people are doing to improve their speech.

If possible, ask a few proficient English-speaking acquaintances for feedback and suggestions.

Practice saying common phrases the way you have heard proficient English speakers say those phrases.

Good luck!

Re: English speaking

Rosemary11 wrote:

Arya,

I also have needs the same to you. And now, I am working in a
company in which every body speaks English very well. So to be
worked here, I must try my best to improve my speaking english
skill sonnest. My colleages give me many interesting advices, such
as listenning english usually, reading English newpapers, etc. Try to
listen English day by day, and the most important thing which
is you must have enough confident to communicate
with foreigns. And up to a day, you will not
think that you are speaking English, words are alway available in
your brain as your native language.

Although my English is not ok, but it is not so bad. And I
really believe that I can improve by myself sonnest. I hope you
will get it as soon as possible.

your friend

Rosemary

Your very lucky. Most English students would be very happy to have a
job where they could speak English all day. What's very important now
is that you're not afraid to talk to your colleagues. In the
beginning it's important to just have conversations, even though you might make
mistakes. Don't let it get you down if you're having a hard time, if you keep going you'll make improvments very quickly.

Of
course you can always take additional steps like watching American movies and
TV shows.

How to improve your English speaking skills, so that you can communicate more easily and effectively. These tips will help you to become a more confident speaker.

Practice where you can, when you can. Any practice is good - whether you speak to someone who is a native English speaker or not.

It's important to build your confidence. If possible, use simple sentence structure that you know is correct, so that you can concentrate on getting your message across.

Try to experiment with the English you know. Apply words and phrases you know to new situations. Native English speakers are more likely to correct you if you use the wrong word than if you use the wrong grammar. Experimenting with vocabulary is a really good way of getting feedback.

Try to respond to what people say to you. You can often get clues to what people think by looking at their body language. Respond to them in a natural way.

Try not to translate into and from your own language. This takes too much time and will make you more hesitant.

If you forget a word, do what native English speakers do all the time, and say things that 'fill' the conversation. This is better than remaining completely silent. Try using 'um', or 'er', if you forget the word.

Don't speak too fast! It's important to use a natural rhythm in speaking English, but if you speak too fast it will be difficult for people to understand you.

Try to relax when you speak, and you'll find that your mouth does most of the pronunciation work for you. When you speak English at normal speed, you'll discover that many of the pronunciation rules, such as word linking, happen automatically.

Final tips¡

- Try to become less hesitant and more confident.

- Don't be shy to speak - the more you do it, the more confident you'll become.

- Remember to be polite - use "please" and "thank you" if you ask someone to do something for you.

Re: Anonymous

Me, too. You should learn by heart all these idioms, it's very interesting. You'll learn in all occasion that you meet, in text book, in dictionary, in conversation and in English on line.To be familiar with them, you should use them when you realize they can use in some situation. At first, you may have some mistakes but mistake is OK. Then little by little your English with idioms will be improved and you have 'a don of eloquence 'of speaking English, For example, I usually use idioms I've just learnt and I usually make mistakes and I have a lot of trouble, However, I'll correct these mistakes and I'll use after that better.

I know your essay is to be corrected by native speakers. But if you don’t mind, please take a look of my version. It is not a correction of your essay. Please take it rather as a kind of worse alternative a mere English learner wrote. I believe some of our kind teachers will come and correct your essay.

Life seems to be full of obstacles that God created to challenge our toughness. Success does not come without obstacles on the way. I have experienced a lot of trouble in studying the new language. For those who speak English as a second language, English is not such a simple language that can be learned in a couple of days.

In the first year, I barely understood the conversation of people around me. Their conversations were so fast for me to catch up with, yet I pretended that I understood them clearly. I laughed at jokes that I did not even find the humor of them. I felt a fear, which obsessed me during my first year. The fear is that I could not belong to the group and I might be laughed at for not speaking English, and it made me hesitant to speak. I could not even pick up the phone because I knew that on the person on the line should speak to me in English. I did not do well at school either. I failed most of subjects that required reading skills such as history, government, etc. This essay probably is not written without the kindness of my host mom. She helped me go through each single step in the process of writing an essay, helped me see every mistake I usually make. She took me through the tough time. I am sure I could not get where I am right now without her help.

The biggest obstacle comes from inside, not from outside. The fear to face my weakness made English my biggest obstacle. I would have never learned anything if I had not conquered that fear. Everyone has his or her own obstacles, but I believe every obstacle could be overcome with a little effort.

paco

Can someone check my grammar ( especially fragment and commasplice )

topic : the biggest obstacle i have had overcome

Life seems to be full of obstacles that God created to challange our toughnesses. Ssuccesses do not come without obstacles on the way. I have experienced a lot trouble in studying the new language. For those who speak English as the second language, English is not simple language that can be learned in couple days.

In the first year, I barely understand the conversation of people around me. Their conversations were so fast for me to catch up, yet I pretended that I understand them clearly. I laughed along the joke that I did not even find the humor of it. I had the fear which obsessed me during my first year. A fear of not belonging to the group, and being laughed at for not speaking English made me hesitated to speak. I could not even pick up the phone because I know that on the other line someone will speak English to me. I did not do well at school either. I failed most of subjects that require reading skill such as history, government etc. This essay probably is not written without the kindness of my host mom. She helped me go through single step in the process of writing an essay, helped me see every mistake I usually make. She took me through the tough time. I could not get where I am right without.

The biggest obstacle comes from within not without. The fear of facing my weakness made English my biggest obstacle. I would never learned anything if I have not conquered my fear. Everyone has his or her own obstacle with a little effort every obstacle could be overcame.

Re: i want to improve my english

I have some advices for those who want to improve their English:

1-Watch English Mavies and listen to them to learn how to say words.

2-When watching a movie or a show in english try to record it on a vedio, Take notes, watch the vedio, read your notes and listen to them on the vedio and chek your pronunciation

3-read Englcih articles in newspapers, magazines and books in a loud voice to practice your tongue. So that helps you to speak English very will and helps you to control your tongue while speaking English.

3-listen to English conversations, that helps you to learn how to pronounce Englsh words.

4-Read alot english to imporve vocabulary.

Re: "you" or "your" or "you are"?

Hi,

.... the conversation of 2 constituters (not the right word, I don't fully understand), one scolded the other "Are you blackmailing me? You ambition s...h...i...t".

I think the word "you" above should be "you are" or "your". But I dont think it was the "typo" with the subtile. Or it is the way of speaking English in real life? I don't think it necessarily has to be 'your' or 'you are'. To say to someone, 'You ambitious s..h..i..t', is rather rude but is still a grammatically correct exclamation. It's similar grammatically to saying to someone 'You fool!'

Best wishes, Clive
