Firstly I would like to introduce my self to you.

Occupation : Civil Engineering Student, semester 3.

Presently I am at the second year studying Civil Engineering at Dili Institute of Technology (DIT). But I cannot continue my study any more to the next semester (the following year) because my family cannot support me. Actually I come from poor family.

I found your website and your email in my country East Timor. The purpose of my visiting you is I would like to submit my proposal to you. On the proposal I attached my Academic Transcription from the university, Technical High School Certificate, Resident Identity and my Passport. Here is my proposal, and I am sorry with my English.

PROPOSAL

Our country is Timor Leste. Timor Leste is a new country and very young, because we just got our independence day on 20th May 2002. Therefore this country needs many developments in many areas and departments, such as: engineering area, economically, technological, social, health, education political, tourism, agriculture etc. Throughout all departments above, this country can get its development and can grow up as well like another country. One of the important department is engineering. So I will prefer to engineering area because Engineering is the discipline and profession of applying technical and scientific knowledge and utilizing natural laws and physical resources in order to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems, and processes that realize a desired objective and meet specified criteria. âThe creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions; all as respects an intended function, economics of operation and safety to life and property.â

One who practices engineering is called an engineer, and those licensed to do so may have more formal designations such as Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer, or Incorporated Engineer. The broad discipline of engineering encompasses a range of more specialized sub disciplines, each with a more specific emphasis on certain fields of application and particular areas of technology.

Engineering is also the practical application of science and math to solve problems, and it is everywhere in the world around us. From the start to the end of each day, engineering technologies improve the ways that we communicate, work, travel, stay healthy, and entertain ourselves.

Engineers are problem-solvers who want to make things work more efficiently and quickly and less expensively. From computer chips and satellites to medical devices and renewable energy technologies, engineering makes our modern life possible. In particular, electrical engineers and computer engineers have a wide range of study options and career paths that let them design, build, and manage those ideas into reality.

The contribution of engineering to the country is on the design of innovative technologies to reduce poverty, promote sustainable development and address other United Nations Millennium Development Goals, in such fields as environmental protection, energy, water supply and sanitation, waste management, use of natural resources, medical care, nutrition, housing, hygiene, disaster protection, mobility, communication and climate change - a key concern of the Mondialogo Engineering Award.

As a citizen of this country I need to contribute my self to develop this country with the skills and knowledge that I gained during I was in Technical High School. But the skill that I have recently is not enough and very limit, even though I am also at the second year of the university. I am coming to your presence just to ask your help and support in order for me to continue my study to the next semester because my family could not support me any more. As I told you that I come from poor family. I believe that after I graduated from university I will learn and gain more knowledge and skills.

Since I was a child I have dreamt to become an engineer in civil construction area. But then I do not prove yet it because my family could not support me any more. Therefore if I could get any possibility from your agency I would like to prove it soon as possible.

In conclusion I am very interest to become an engineer in one day in order for me can develop my new country. If I could get any support from you, actually I would like to transfer to Indonesian country as well. Because in my country specially in the Institute that I belong to during two years, we did not have any practicalities equipments, laboratory practicality, and library or we can say incompletely of facilities etc.

My planning forward is I would like to continue my study across to Indonesian country at GADJAH MADA UNIVERSITY (UGM) in Yokyakarta as soon as possible. The reason why I chose Indonesia to seeking knowledge there, because there has complete facilities, such as: equipment tools for practicality, laboratory, library and etc. I believe that when I finish my study over Indonesia I will bring more knowledge and skills that I gained to my country. And in the same time I can contribute my self to develop this country this country.

In my request I have putted amount money. These money I will use it to pay the university, rent house, food, buying books, transportation from my country to Indonesia and to treat also the documents that needed and etc.

BUDGET PLANING

Ã Treat my documents such as: Passport and Visa amount = USD $ 150

Ã Transportation from East Timor to Indonesia amount = USD $ 300

Ã Transfer (University Registration) = USD $ 500

Ã Rent House US $ 50,00/month X 36 months (3 Years) = USD $ 1,800

Ã Payment per semester US $ 200,00/semester X 6 semesters = USD $ 1,200

Ã Research Practicality in the last two semesters = USD $ 500

Ã Final Graduation from the University = USD $ 1,000

Ã Food, transportation, Photocopy and etc per month 75,00x36 months= USD $ 2,700

Ã Transportation for coming back from Indonesia to East Timor = USD $ 300,00

TOTAL = USD $ 8,450

In word amount (EIGHT THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS)

That is my proposal and hopefully may you will consider my situation.

Hi knjiga, Welcome to the English Forums. Thanks for joining us.

IMHO "Doubtlessly" doesn't fly here. Sadly spoiling your alliteration, I'd go with "Doubtless, those tributaries are divergent." The image is still problematic. I wouldn't exactly call it a mixed metaphor, but rather a mixed-level metaphor. (I made that up.) The contents of a tributary is/are water. Surely the contents are her knowledge and experiences, but I'm not sure to what extent you should speak on both levels at the same time. I think of divergence as an action. "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood." It's something the roads do. While you may travel a road in both directions, a river usually flows in only one. When two tributaries come together, it's called a confluence. I think a divergence in a river would be close to the end of it's journey, where it fans out at the delta and takes two different paths. In other words, I think your river is trying to flow upstream.

Well, I'm tempted to scrap all this. My dictionary lists many different uses for "diverge," even what I would call "divert," which I've always thought of as something entirely different. To me, diverge is the opposite of converge, which clearly implies a direction of flow. (Another term that comes to mind is "bifurcation" - definitely not poetic - as when your carotid artery splits into two flows in your neck.)

I'm going to just leave this for your consideration. You may be completely justified in your usage, so don't let me discourage you. I see that you return to the metaphor later in your paragraph, so I think the issue is worth vetting.

Just a couple of suggestions:

I prefer "badly" to "seriously" here.

"Them" in the second sentence seems slightly awkward to me because when I hit it I'm not sure which of "homes", "survivors", or "homes + survivors + delta" it might refer to. It becomes clear that it must mean survivors, but by that time I've already formed an image of homes possibly being left hungry and wondering.

Without wasting much time, I moved on with my assignment, taking pictures of destroyed homes, survivors and the seriously hit delta. When night fell, we slipped out of the area, leaving them behind, hungry and wondering what their future would be. Hopefully, this story will show to the world how inhumane the regime is and bring some changes to the victims.

Are there any mistakes?

Why origins is used in plural at the beginning and later switched to singular? Can I say "a subject of controversy" instead of "the subject of controversy?
