Hi,

Born on (date) in (city) , son of Santa Clause, (name), (I want to add school number here. Can I say "with school number 1125698"? )You can say it, although it's not very idiomatic. But people will understand that this is a translation.

Doll Smith has been awarded this diploma on (date,) having completed a four year education in Foreign Language Teaching in 1990-1991 (in the original text there is a term/actually it is a phrase in Turkish meaning the time passed with learning at school. I wanted to translate its English but it seems that I couldn't find the right word. What can it be? I don't quite understand.) Why not say 'completed in 1991'?.

with a Bachelor's Degree with all the rights, privileges and honours to use this diploma as an EFL teacher by ordinance and regulations.

With a translation, it's really just a matter of trying to stick as close as possible to the original words, isn't it? ---- I think so but my teacher expects me to translate like a proffessional. He doesn't accept any other structures not close to the ones in his mind. He expects me to give the meaning which native speakers will understand without recognizing that it is a translation.For God's sake! They thought us nothing about translation for 3 years but now they want us to translate professionally even from TURKISH TO ENGLISH! (It is harder as you guess). I hope I will not fail in summer school.

Diplomas often use flowery, archaic and stilted language. Often, they are even in Latin.

Let's try to see if this can read "OK". - Believe me or not, I read the sentence with "ok" in my mind before writing it but I ended up writing "well".

Yes. That's right. This illustrates that even the could of politeness includes would.

Yes. You are simply making explicit what can be left implicit if you wish. Your additions of an if-clause both in your example and in mine are possible, but not necessary.

Hi,

1. Let us say this was in quotation marks. How would you validate the use of the underlined tense?

The people who built houses; their walls have crumbled, as if they had never been!

2. TWO more questions:

Does 'as if' in normal sentential situations mean the same as 'if', like here.

He splurged as if he had unlimited amount of money. -- this wouldn't be a good example to confirm my argument but this would be good though.
He would splurge as if he had unlimited amount of money. -- no. 2 conditional?

I meant to ask you this. Could we have the modal word 'would' in the if-clause? I think 'would' has a sense of (conditional??) past, so this would be good.
If you would bring cake, I would bring cola to the party.

Perfectly grammatical. As I mentioned in a previous post in this thread, the past perfect is the tense for cases when the events are not being told in the order in which they occurred.

Actual order of events: The High Court found the boy guilty. (Later,) the World Court threw out the conviction.

Told in reverse order:

The World Court today threw out the conviction of a 12-year-old boy. The High Court had found the boy guilty on July 1, 2003.

That the exact date is mentioned in the same clause as the past perfect tense is irrelevant. It's "before today". That's all that counts.

The restriction to cases where an exact time is not mentioned applies to the present perfect, not to the past perfect. For example, the following is incorrect:

*The High Court has found the boy guilty on July 1, 2003.

Our customer required a seaway bill of lading instead of a bill of lading, which means that we only received the document copy from the forwarder, not the original. Therefore, we are unable to fulfill your requirement to change the cargo receipt instead of the bill of lading.

For point 3 below, it is OK to delete the clause, âDate of received of goods in Cargo Receipt treat as shipment dateâ as you requested. Would you please explain our status to your top manager and confirm to us by return, so that we can send this letter of credit to the bank tomorrow?

Please advise the requirement for the reference form. In the contract of employment clause 16.a.iii, it stated that whether during or outside office hours, I shall not be allowed to engage in other work without ABC plc's written permission. Could you provide me an written permission to enable me to work for another job outside office hours?

Is starting off with a what looks to be a subordinate clause in a question correct? No problem. It's commonly done.

Reflecting on his past work experience, would you say he is a good candidate for the job?

Taking into consideration the fact that he has quite an extensive background in working with cars, would you say he is a good candidate for this mechanic's job?

Also, please correct the sentences if you can.
