My interest in
Science and English dates back to my school days. Being an inquisitive boy, I
always have been eager to learn more and more around me. My interest in wide
range of subjects and my inner aspiration helped me a lot to acquire a
significant knowledge of the Science, history and culture of the world. With
the passage of time my eagerness for knowledge got specified and my desire to
go deeper into my subjects intensified.

After completing
my graduation with chemistry Biology and English I started teaching in Sir
Syed Secondary School
–a reputable institute of District
  Sahiwal (Pakistan).
Here I had a chance to instill my curiosity and my knowledge into my students.
I gave them the basic concepts of Science and taught them how to use correct
English. I also learned from their questions as my teachers had from mine. Along
with teaching I also worked as an educational counselor by keeping close
relation with students and their parents.

            To
familiarize my self with latest teaching and management techniques I got
admission in bachelor of Education (B.Ed) program of Allama Iqbal Open
University Islamabad. In this
course I learned to teach English and science at elementary level.

Major subjects during this course
were school administration and management education psychology, theories of
education and Evaluation. At the end of the course I completed ten days workshop
in which I was selected the representative of the class. I also helped the
other trainee teacher.

            The
most important decision in my life was when I took admission in master in
English language and literature. I have got a chance to get a wide range of
knowledge in the realm of English the core courses during my master in English
which have a great effect on my personality were English drama, Novel, poetry,
linguistics and phonetics, English grammar and teaching of English as a foreign
language (TEFL).During this study work I explored the world of English
literature. I at once fell in love with a work of CHAUCER, SHAKESPEARE and
BERTRAND RUSSEL which are the most humanistic writers of the world. This course
has greatly improved my language skills. Now a days, I am teaching English and
science in Govt middle school.

            My
hobbies are reading literature, watching English movies and listening English
programmes of radio(like BBC,VOA ).i am also a good player of basket ball .i
love to read about the history and culture of different nations and like to
discuss and solve educational problems of teachers and students. But my ultimate
aim is to improve and develop myself first then works for human beings at
higher level in the field of education. My independence and full responsibility
for myself have driven me to a higher level of maturity than many of my peers,
a quality that differentiates me form many other applicants.

I have studied
all about your program of studies, course content really attract me to join
this master level program. This will develop in me different skills and broaden
my perspective of life in the light of alternative points of views. Also on the
completion of this master level program I will be able to analyze and assess
the change process in education and may examine all these from a number of
perspective

I am highly aware of the superb
reputation of your current program. Course contents have served to deepen my
interest in attending; I know that, in addition to your excellent faculty, your
facilities like libraries are among the best. I hope u will give me the
privilege of continuing my studies at the fine institutions of Europe

And OED gives a quote for both "have trouble in X-ing"(1898) and "have trouble in X-ing" (1967). These things suggest "have trouble X-ing" is an ellipsis of "had trouble in X-ing ". "Spend time X-ing" seems also to be an ellipsis of "spend time in X-ing" rather than "spend time on X-ing". In the Gutenberg, "spend time X-ing" and "spend time in X-ing" appear with almost equal frequencies.

You can get about 30 pages of "a position of teaching English" on Google. But somehow all of them appear in the pages with titles written in Chinese. There is no page using "a position of teaching Spanish", although there are 100 sites where "a position teaching Spanish" is used. As for other possibilities, I didn’t study them. If you English speakers omitted everything arbitrarily to coin a new collocation, as you are suggesting in the previous post, I wouldn't learn English grammar anymore.

Anyway thank you for your kind comments.

paco

Re: Looking for a volunteer to correct English grammar formy PhD thesis

I would be interested.Currently involved in teaching english to Senior secondary learners(age-17+). I am doing a course of Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). Just need some help and guidlines in a few querries.

Following are the questions. make sure to answer with complete explanation and ample of examples so that i can understand the topic well.

Question 1:

Sentences can be constructed without involving structural words. For example:

          Tanver likes eating dry fruits.

Even then the use of auxillaries and structural words is emphasised. Why? Discuss in detail.

Question 2:

What is the difference between transitive, intransitive and linking verbs? Give five examples in each case.

Question 3:

Proper nouns sometimes become common nouns and vice versa. Discuss whether this statement is true or false. Supprt your answer with examples.

I would be really thakful to any of you who answers these problems. (make sure to give ample of examples along with the explanation)

thanks a bunch.

Isn't language primarily about communication. You say it; I understand it. Wasn't grammar an invention for non-native speakers of Ancient Greek? I assert the subjunctive is a construct and doesn't exist in English. Shoot me down in flames.

Valid question for those who are learning language via "grammar rules", all the more for those who would best benefit from other approaches/strategies when learning language. The language being learnt might be one criteria to consider when determining which teaching/learning strategies are to be used.

As a French Canadian who learnt both French and English through a very high dosage of grammar rules, and who has become a teacher (I have taught both to French students and English students, first and second language both), I believe that maybe some languages may be easier to learn... in the long run... if grammar rules are included as one of the approaches to learning.

French, in spite of its seemingly infinite lists of "exceptions", is very much like music: you learn the basic rule and you can apply it to just about any other similar situation.

Being bilingual (French/English) before entering Kindergarten, I learnt English through grammar as well. It seemed valid at the time (what does a kid know?), but when I attempted to use this approach to teach English, it became considerably more challenging. I then understood that what was valid for me as a child, was not so pertinent when teaching students through this approach. You see, French first language teaching approaches at the time was through a high percentage of grammar. Teachers in French schools simply applied the same strategy when teaching English (it was always our homeroom teacher who taught us English). This was not true in the English Education system at the time... or now! Even now, when I have attempted to teach French grammar, it is very difficult for students when they have had no previous experience in learning through this approach wether French or English first language.

When I read through the posts, I skipped through the section of Pemmican's comments that pertained to grammar. This shows my laziness because obviously Pemmican masters "English grammar" more than I! As I skimmed through these parts, I thought of your comment Xavier

Xavier wrote:

posts giving very complicated explanations of usage, which don't always make a whole lot of sense.

Indeed, "advanced" grammar may be more fitting for one who would want to go beyond the simple need to communicate, but rather wishes to become an English scholar.

The intent of the learner can help determine the "amount" of grammar included. As well as the language being learnt.

Re: Teach or taught

Thanks Clive for your input here.

What I want to say is the following:

The principal of the school or the administration of the school will
always say English is taught at our school or We taught English at our
school.

For some reason, (you may know the reason) they don't say we teach English at our school.

On the other hand, you and I or a man on the street could say they are
teaching English at that school. As you mentioned a teacher of the
school could say we are teaching English at our school. However, I
guess a teacher who know English grammar to some extent will always say
we taught English at our school.

The central administrative authority would toe the line with the school
administrators. They will say English is taught at that school.

If you can study HTML or C++ programming at that school.

The principal of the school will always say C++ programming and HTML are taught at our school.

The principal will not say we are teaching C++ programming and HTML programming at our school.

Moreover, the central administrtive authority will always say C++ programming and HTML programming are taught at that school.

You wrote the following is acceptable:
Many schools
are teaching C++ programming and HTML related programming.
I have a hunch that a person who knows some English grammar will
always use the word 'taught' . Many schools taught C++ programming and HTML related programming. Even for ongoing courses.

[Nowadays I am going to a school and learning some advanced HTML, CSS,
PHP, SQL programming. I have done some self studies in the past. Now I
am learning them methodically. ]

I am not a native speaker of English. I have
learnt similar English grammar in the past.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Teaching and learning English in Vietnam has been causing a headache, I think so. I'm a Vietnamese, and I'm an English gifted student, so I can understand it all. You know, almost all students in Vietnam studying English say it is very difficult for them to communicate with foreigners. I have read an article about studying English in Vietnam. It said that a 10th grade student just can say: "Hello", and "Sorry, I can't understand what you say". The article included that it was due to the method almost all teachers applied in Vietnam: emphasizing English grammar and ignoring other skills like listening and speaking (while the main aim of studying English is communication) (I don't say that all English teachers do so, 'cause there are many of them very good at teaching the language). Furthermore, the teaching method is not approved by students themselves. They are young, and they need an English period full of joy and laughter (in games or discussions), not mere reading passages and questions, so that they can easily communicate with their friends and thus with foreigners. Vietnam is on its way to globalization, so, I hope that Learning and Teaching in Vietnam will someday be improved, and that Vietnamese students realize how important English is to their own future lives and careers!!!
