If you come to an English language school in the UK then they will often arrange for you to live with a host family while you are on the course.

Hi Openmind,

It depends on where the student resides whether they will 'have access' to native speakers or not. If you move to England, for instance, you will have access to native speakers. Many English people correct foreigners when they make mistakes - which is very good for the foreigner as they learn by making mistakes, so to say.

People who do not live in an English speaking country, but who wish to improve their English, could do so on a website like this one. In here, you get to interact with native speakers who can answer any grammar related questions you as a learner may have. You can also improve your English by attending conversation classes at an English language school.

At present I am attending the Humboldt Grammar School in ***. I will sit my A-Levels in May 2006 and would like to begin my study thereafter.

I am keen to take up the study of Aviation Management as I am very interested in the fields of aviation and commerce. In addition, studying at your University of Applied Sciences would be ideal in helping me broaden my knowledge of foreign languages.

My grandfather is long dead, Paupau. I am over 60 years old myself. He was a tropical fish breeder in Illinois (USA) many years ago, when I was growing up. He bred the commoner species-- guppies, tetras, mollies, etc, for sale to pet stores.

I run my own small English language school in my home near Ishikawacho in Yokohama.

I greatly appreciate your detailed discussion on this subject. It's really helpful.

I felt reluctant to join any of the armed forces, as my mother being a widow at that time.

Hurm, you feel this sentence odd. So what was what I learned in an English language school at Berkeley when I was young? I think I was taught it was grammatical if one takes it as a kind of absolute participle phrase. Actually I picked this sentence from a BBC's site. But it seems true nowadays people rarely use this kind of structure. I should admit some part of my English knowledge is too old.

I agree that English became a little messy about discrimination of gerunds and present participles due to the loss of -ende form. If England had not experienced the three centuries of lingual anarchism after the Norman French conquest, English grammar would have remained more consistent and easier for us foreigners to learn. Sigh.
