Hi,
I am terribly sorry, but this sentence makes no sense at all to me!
It looks as if it were an excerpt of an academic work (essay, paper, article) describing the results of some sort of research. Is it?

Are you saying that those SMEs did not take part in something for one or more of the following reasons: (1) location of their head offices, (2) business not started yet, or (3) refusal to participate?
If that's the case, I wouldn't say "were unable to participate", because this does not apply to somebody who "refused to take part" in whatever it may be. If I refuse to do something, I don't want to do it, despite being able to!

As for your question, I wouldn't use "either" and I would also rephrase the part after "due to" ("due to their head office being located elsewhere, had not commenced their operation or refused to take part"), which doesn't sound good to me. I think you've got some problems with verb forms.

Warning: This is just my opinion and I'm not a native, so please wait for some more reliable answers. I really don't want to mislead you.

A sequel to an article before a gerund question

Can you please tell me why a person use an indefinite article before a gerund/verbal noun?

I think here people are making an instance of all the gerund/verbal noun "a playing" and not making types of it. Like I have said in the thread named "indefinite article before a gerund," I think native speakers have choices when confronted with the dilemma like this (if we could call it a dilemma); they can make an instance of the gerund/verbal noun or types of it. I think making instances (that is 'separate occurances") is what has been done for these sentences I copied (pasted??) from a Google Book search.

any better topic for writing a thesis

hi,

I'm a teacher in a local school in Malaysia. I teach english subject. my first degree was social science and diploma was tesl. english taught in my country is communicative. teaching english in a rural school is a great challenge.at the moment, i am considering to pursue my studies to a master's level. in fact i am waiting for a reply from a local university about my application. i chose to do tesl. the thing is i need to write a thesis and the topic i could think of at this point is 'using newspaper is an approach in teaching writing. in my opinion, a person can learn to write proper sentences by observing sentences constructed in an article. people can learn on how a good sentence is built around a newly-learnt verb. furthermore, newspapers contain various columns ranging from general news to sports from which students are able to read and learn how to write essays of different genre. Do you think that this topic has somewhat been written too often? could anyone give me advice on what topic i should write for my thesis or should i keep on with this topic?

- You need to sit down with (a) pen and (a) paper in order to write your essay. -- They are singular countable nouns, but 'pen and paper' is also idiomatic.

Good day everyone,

It has been long time since I posted something here.

My question is; sometimes I feel that it is difficult to decide on whether to use articles or not, please take a look at the following examples:

- You need to sit down with (a) pen and (a) paper in order to write your essay.

- It has been (a) long time since I posted something here.

- I went to (the) stock market last night.

- It seems that (the) history repeats itself.

I know there are general rules for using articles, I went through them and could not apply them to the above examples. I may need help from somebody who is really good in this area

Go away or (else) I'll call the police.

Neither of these would be found in a passage written in formal English. At least I can't imagine an essay, news article, or scientific paper that would contain the idea of threatening to call the police -- unless it was quoted, of course.

Both expressions are in the same neutral register, however. Neither is particularly more or less formal than the other.

Every child is a kind and innocent human, he looks like a white paper, where his attitudes write and determine his future. As a social research findings show that children's earliest experiences significantly influence their future development. Children basically are vulnerable humans, in a building stage, significantly impacted by the environment and those around them .So, first of all, educating people around them and developing their environment are essential ways to create good children.

After that, we should give them particular care and tangible& intangible rights because of their weakness .They have the right to be fed well, clothed, educated, and protected and to get safety. They also have the right to enjoy love and affection from their parents in a safe family and to be treated equally vis-Ã -vis their siblings. We should also keep them away from dangerous and anesthetic stuffs in a safe society.Besides, practicing entertainment is also an essential requirement to help them create and to stimulate their imagination.Dont forget the special rights of children with special needs. All of these rights can create a good and creative child in his safe society.

But, do all of these rights really exist? I regret saying that a lot of children donât have these essential rights .There are many poor families and societies that can't ensure these rights. Many children suffer psychical and physical pains and that is why many humanity organizations were established, such as UNICEF that helps, supports, encourages them and ensures their rights, in order to live a good life. And so do governments that should take care of children and guide them well by establishing clubs and good schools ,and to make many competitions between gifted children to motivate them, and to control their energy, in order to build a good society by these children .

If we take a look at Muslim community, 1400years ago, we will find that our prophet (PBUH) took care of children and ensured their rights by the Islamic legislation. In (sunna), there are many sayings that show us how to treat children ,for example ,when he was kissing the children , he said :"Who doesnât show mercy to others ,will not be shown mercy"he meant that we should give them in order to give us .Another saying is " A father gives his child nothing better than a good education" this proves the importance of education in Islam. There are also a lot of great sayings that I would like to write about but I cant sum up them in this article .

At last , children nowadays are the builder of tomorrow ,build them well as much as you can ,to make better world . and remember , to bring up your children well ,to water these blossoms with good manners and to show them the light of knowledge ,in a creative and productive environment ,in order to help them grow up well and to spread their aroma all around the world .

Could anyone please take a look at my essay and give some comments on it? Anything will be helpful, as I'm taking the CAE exam in June and I need to improve my writing...

The topic is from my textbook. I'm asked to write an article about cleanliness on college and about recently introduced principal's measures.

Clean-up Day

Did you know that there has been, in average, only 1 bin for each 400m of the foot-paths in the college areal? This is fortunately not true anymore. The principal launched a campaign against litter in the college â she declared a Clean-up day and set up few new rules.

The main purpose of the Clean-up day was to draw students' attention and to make a cut to their carelessness as to the litter around the college. Volunteers were given rubbish bags and rubber gloves to collect rubbish from around the college and they were promised a free buffet supper as a little thank you. They were also asked to hand out leaflets about how to keep the college clean. Yet this has not had a very positive response as it only produced more rubbish to get rid of.

Responses to the set-up rules are uneven. Students really appreciate the extra bins which even with their nature-friendly design nicely complements the college grounds. Very good voice has also, not only among the non-smoking students' community, a no smoking policy which indirectly helped the college not to have the cigarette ends everywhere. Providing that you are a non-smoker you must love this rule. What you might find a bit annoying and strict is the height of the set fines for dropping litter on the college grounds. Opinions on this topic differs from student to student. Many of them, though the minority, are heard that it would lead them to the bankruptcy and that it is a nonsense to have such high fines, whereas the principal, teachers and the majority of the students think that it could motivate the students for whom taking the empty packs and used tissues to the bin was so much effort to put in it hadn't paid them off to undertake.

All in all, the Clean-up Day was very successful and definitely made our college a cleaner place, and if nothing else it at least made people feel more positive about keeping the college clean. So next time you see someone to get rid of a food-pack at a wrong place show him how to do it the proper way.

Bilions of people around the world study English as their foreign language. Many of them attribute a fluent English learner to living in an English speaking country, whereas others believe that there are many obstacles when studying overseas. Therefore,this essay will discuss about the benefits and negatives of studying English in an English-speaking country.

The first argument in favor of studying English in an English-speaking country is that students can enhance all their English skills with the support of good facilities. Firstly, surrounding environment with full-time speaking English wherever students go may help them improve speaking and listening dramatically. Furthermore, they have enormous oppotunities to approach a new culture and the modern living style in most English speaking countries. Those lead to the deeper understanding in English and indirectly make students' reading and writing skills become better. In brief, English skills will rise up when students live in an English speaking country.

Although there are some advantages, studying English in an English speaking country still have some disadvantages.

The primary negative for studying English in an English speaking country is that there are various obstacles when living alone in the new country. Many students who have not left their home before feel shocked with the new culture and they usually find difficult to live independently because of the lack of family support. --That was a very well-written sentence! In addition, most English speaking countries are developed. As a consequence, many students may encounter with the lure of the fashionable and luxurious society and they plunge themselves into that society without concious thinking. This needs a bit of development. Are you saying that will fall into the hedonistic lifestyle of the decadent Americans? What are the real dangers you're talking about?

Another disadvantage of studying English in an English speaking country is the financial problems. Living overseas for many years in order to studying may cost a large amount of money. For example, the aggregate of living cost and tuition fees for one year study in Australia may cost around 30,000 dollars. Moreover, the cost can increase each year as a result of inflation all over the world and that can be a burden for students' family finance.

In conclusion, this essay has identified both positive and negative aspects of studying English in an English speaking country. Despite the advantages to improve all English skills, it still have a pressure for students and their family. Consequently, students should think carefully about studying overseas to make sure that they can adapt easily to new environment. You list only "adapt" but you mention the financial aspect too. I think you should add something about that to your final sentence.

Through History, weâve seen that American people are proud and want to manage the world. Meanwhile, French people know how to live and they have a more collectivism mentality. According to several studies, the US is a more âmasculineâ country than France. Weâre about to study if this is a reality or not.

1Â°/ First, we can compare educational values between these two countries.

The American people educational values are rather funded on individualism.

Each person must show his value to be recognized, the merit is more important than the link formed (relationship) with others. Pupils and students have to be independent, self-confident, their teacher assists them in work but they donât give solutions. They also have to be competitive.

For instance, intercollegiate sporting events are promoted in American football and basketball. These competitions attract not only young people but all sport fans.

In France, educational values are rather funded on collectivism.

We also have a competitive policy as we se through a job or college interview. The selection is tough, there are some oral or written exams and many people are refused.

The vision of soccer as a âsweetâ sport is far from reality because many players are hurt during the games.

Furthermore, there are French action movies like âLes riviÃ¨res pourpresâ, âNikitaâ and âLeonâ which compete with American super production.

In my opinion, the association between masculine culture with men who search for success and power, and feminine culture with women who look after their family is a stereotype. It tends to disappear today, women are more and more independent and they can be companyâs bosses or minister.

For instance, the French company CHANEL is lead by a woman.

To conclude, obviously the US is a more âmasculineâ culture than France. But in my view, there isnât a best culture because self-confidence and relationships are essential to have a happy live.

We can wonder if the promotion of power and success could not lead to abuse.
