Hi Littl, and welcome to the forums. And before I forget, good luck in your anthropoloy studies.

We do provide our help on this forum for free, so if you have something to post, you can post it here. However, because we do this as volunteers, you are not guaranteed to get an immediate response. You are more likely to get a response if you keep your essays short, or if you only post a paragraph or two that you are struggling with. We do NOT accept e-mails from members with essays attached to correct and e-mail back - you post them in the forums, and hope for the best.

I'm sure there are other members who can recommend books to help with your writing. I've always liked an old book called The Elements of Style by Strunk and White.

You can send PMs to certain members, but not to request private help with an essay. (By the way, remember that English has a capital E.)

Whenever I write an essay, I take a lot of time revising it and I reread every sentence in my essay. Yet it always seems that it does not really make sense to the readers. I do not know how to help myself, but I am eager to work with anyone who would want to help me. If you have any advice on how can I improve my English, or if you want to work with me to improve my English, I know it will get much better. I need someone to guide me in learning English writing. I do not have perfect or the best English when I am writing, and I am not sure if my writing would make sense to the reader. It's been recommended to me get an English tutor, but I am having hard time finding one, so I went online to research. Others have said that I will need to learn only basic English. I am confused how I can start, what to study, and what to focus on. These are the questions that are going in my mind. So, if anyone has time to help and guide me. I will work hard for you. I am willing to learn.

Do you know anything to read online or a good author/book to read? what kind of book do you recommend to read for non-native english like me?

I am not really good in writing english. this coming semester, I will be studying anthropology. It is hard for me to combine unfamiliar words and put in a sentence. So, I would also want to prepare myself, I will need your advice of how to prepare or to study? Would you like to help me?

Since participant countries of the six-party talks signed a comprehensive agreement in 2005 September, diplomatic efforts to resolve North Koreaâs nuclear stand-still have hardly been seen. At that time, North Korea agreed to halting their nuclear bomb program in return for economic aid, energy aid and security assurance. However, since North Korea launched a nuclear test in last October, the negotiation has nearly come to a rupture.

On this week, negotiators from each country focused on how to set the timetable for abolishing North Koreaâs nuclear program, and on how much and when the reclusive nation will receive compensation. Bush administrationâs officials said that the current proposal demand that North Korea shut down and seal main nuclear facilities in the next couple of months in return for providing fuel oil from South Korea and starting a talk for building a diplomatic tie between North Korea and the United States.

Nevertheless, the procedure has difficulties due to details on how much aid North Korea accurately demanded. Aleksandr Losyukov, Russian top envoy, said that participant countries did not decide on the amount of final aid, and refused to open the specific amount of money that North Korea requested. âThe biggest stumbling block is still economic aidâ, he added.

However, a diplomat said that problems are not sole. âSituations are still serious. Gaps among each country for the problem have been narrowed, but a definite resolution have hardly been reached.â, Japanese representative Kenichiro Sasae said to reporters.

Citing an unidentified diplomatic source, Japanese Kyodo news reported that North Korea requested fuel oil which was an equivalent to two million ton, and it took the other participant countries by surprise.

Republic of Korea and the United states have kept common interests and values in East Asia as well as in the world. Two nations have deeply recognized the value of democracy in the world. We also have conviction that free trades make the world prosperous. As a firm and reliable partner, ROK has gradually enhanced economic ties with the United States. The Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement is one of these efforts to further our partnership for better lives of both countriesâ people.

The FTA is equally beneficial for both countries for two reasons. Firstly, it will spur more investment on each country. With opening more markets, two countriesâ enterprises can enjoy more chances to get profit. Simultaneously, the FTA will make us more attractive for Foreign Direct Investment which target on ROK and the U.S. due to deterring trade barriers. Secondly, the FTA will be a pillar for the economic balance in East Asia. Growing Chinaâs clout should be balanced by the firm economic alliance between other nations. The FTA will become one of main factors for two nations to maintain economic power in East Asia.

I wish Senators now have wisdom to choose more prosperous future of the U.S. as well as you did excellently. The FTA with ROK will demonstrate that the U.S. has a will for free trades with the world. I would really appreciate your commitment to further economic relations between ROK and the U.S.

Iâve lived in this country a lot longer than I did in my own birthplace. United States is my adapted country and I am grateful for everything and opportunity this country has opened up to me. From being an ignorant young teen to a well-paid engineer, Iâve truly experienced the American dream and savored every moment along the way. For me, learning English was difficult at the beginning but as time went on, I became motivated to do better than just to âget byâ. Although there were many years of tough time and struggle trying to adapt to a new life and learning English, I never gave up because I wanted to prove to myself and those who wouldnât give me the time of day that I could break out of the Chinatown walls. This ambition and perseverance became the fuel for my motivation to succeed. I was working at night as a waiter while going to adult school to get my GED during the day. Then I went to a technical college for electronics. The rest was history. With the same attitude I had in learning, I developed a strong work ethic which became an important asset in my career.

Through my eyes, I have seen both sides of the world. I think Western culture cultivates individualism and materialism which at the same time place little or no emphasis on disciplines and respect. As a result, parents, elders and teachers are often regarded as figures of troubles among some teenagers. With the advance of technology and computers,

Western influences, trend and images began to infiltrate Asian countries. Today, teenagers in countries with traditional values are acting and behaving just like their counter parts in the US. I hope I am not offending anyone in this forum for being so straight-forward. Jim ,since you opened up this conversation, I thought you may be interested to learn whatâs on my mind.

The advantages and/or disadvantages of English as a global language

There is a heat discussion whether English is suitable for a global language or not. I think there are two advantages and one disadvantage of English as a global language as following.
The first advantage is that many people in the world are using English as the fact. Language learning is not so easy that this fact is advantageous for English.
The second advantage is that future language trends are for English. For example , in China, one of the biggest country in the world , many young people are learning English, it is said.
The disadvantage is that there are many kinds of English such as British, American, or other forms of English. This would annoy English learners, so this is the disadvantage .
In conclusion, in spite of the disadvantage, I think English is suitable for a global language because of the two advantages that I mentioned.

I totally agree with you when you claim that it is essential to change our daily habits if we want to develope our language skills. I had similar experiences in learning foreign languages. For instance, when I was learning English only at school, I mean I was doing grammar exercises, writing essays, learning by heart new vocabulary, I felt that I was doing a big effort, but my results couldn't satisfy me. I had to begin looking for opportunities to use English as often as it was possible. Like here, in this forum. Besides, I started to read English literature and magazines.

What is your trick in learning vocabulary (for example), or maybe you are a native speaker and you don't have to learn English words

Learning English

Hello,

Being a beginner student of English is hard. There are many obstacles like personal and learning problems that make a student to take a lot of time in learning a new language.

As a student of an English school, I would like to tell you a little bit about my experience in learning this nice language. In this experience, I found some problems like pronunciation, words order, grammar and more. Also I found some solutions such as learning songs, playing games, reading books and more that helped me to improve my English.

Ecuador, a country in South America where almost every body speaks the same language, is where I born. Three years ago I decided to come to NY. When I arrived here, I was surprised to find many costumes of people from different countries. As the time passed, I started missing my own costumes like carnivals. It made me to get depressed and it affected my performance in the school. It is difficult to learn new things when people get depressed.

When I started my English class, I didnât know about pronunciation. It was difficult to talk to the teacher about my problems in grammar. I had to talk to my partner who knew the same language like me, and this way to get a little explain of some grammar.

At the beginning of my English classes was difficult to speak English because I had to keep in mind the words order like white house that in Spanish order is house white (Casa Blanca).

Some times the English grammar got me confused. I needed time to understand it. When I was trying to speak, there was a lot of grammar to remember if I wanted to express a clear idea to my teacher or some English speaker.

Trough the time, I have learned some ways to improve my English. I learn many words by listening some songs (I like Bryan Adamâs songs) and narrations of the books that comes in CDs like the Alchemist. Also, I learn the way of pronunciation by this way. I think is good idea to try to sing a popular or interesting song in class. It makes the class more interesting.

Playing games is a good idea in class. I have learned to speak a little bit more by playing like an actor. When I was in class, the teacher organized small groups to perform situations of daily life. It was fun for me.

The English class is more interesting when the teacher brings an interesting book. Some time ago my teacher brought to the class many books about the Alchemist. When I started reading, I was tempting to read more and more. This way I increased my vocabulary. I can say every body enjoyed the book.

If the teacher speaks to the class about topics that are interesting to the students, the class becomes less cold. The students feel more comfortable and start speaking more and more. It is like to speak to a friend without any fear.

In the end, I have finished writing a little bit of my experience in learning a new language. Learning a new language takes a lot of time. Today I am still learning new words, pronunciations, grammar.

I hope this little essay is good. If anyone sees some problems in my grammar, please correct them. Thank you.

Write an essay (2-3 pages) and title it appropropratiely considering the main contents. The essay should be based on the following points: â¢ What is your current occupation and what are your main work tasks? Describe and justify the choices you have made in the defferent phases of your work history â how did you get to the current phase? â¢ Discuss: What are the challenges of your own professional development as a teacher? How is the vocational teacher profession changing in relation to the changes in the working environment? How could the challenges you described above be taken into account in the X... Vocational Teacher Education?

I would like to apply to the Hâ¦. Vocational Teacher Education Programme in English.

I work nowadays as an English teacher in Jâ¦.. Comprehensive School.

My main task is obviously to teach English (27 hours a week), but as a full time teacher I take care of two international projects, such as Comenius- Sokrates and E-Twinning. Both projects involve students and teachers from many countries.

COMENIUS supports school partnerships, projects for the training of school education staff, and school education networks. It thus aims to enhance the quality of teaching, strengthen its European dimension and promote language learning and mobility. In December 2005 Comenius conference took place in Jâ¦â¦. Our school was proud to host many project coordinators and teachers from Holland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, etc. We had a week to discuss about future projects and other activities. Our school will take part in the exchange student program. Five students with two teachers will go to France in May 2006.

E-Twinning is the main action of the European Union's eLearning programme. It promotes the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) at schools in Europe. Teachers and students use the Internet to work together across borders. They cooperate, exchange information and share learning materials. Our school has had two partner schools so far. We have done introduction presentations and have been writing letter to each other. Many different written projects have been sent among partner schools.

As the English teacher I have done web pages where pupils find on-line recourses for learning English language. They can read different texts, grammar materials and check their language skills trough on-line exercises.

But how did I become a teacher?

I have got a degree of Bachelor of Business Administration in 2001 from the H..â¦.Polytechnic. However since there was no possibility to take a masterâs degree in English with a polytechnic degree that time, I have completed other studies abroad.

When studying international business I got interested in electronic commerce. Thatâs why I took master courses in E-commerce at B.â¦. University.

Finishing business studies had given me a sense of accomplishment that whetted my
appetite for further studies, so I started studies in psychology at Wâ¦.. University.

Psychological studies aimed at providing selected elements of psychological knowledge and skills to the holders of higher education diplomas which are taken to update or develop professional or academic knowledge.

As you can see yourself I have done a lot of work to increase my qualifications. Moreover I have done my degrees faster than other students. For example Xâ¦..â¦Bachelor degree I completed within 2,5 years with good grades although the whole studies usually take 3,5 - 4 years and thatâs why I was awarded by a scholarship. I was considered to be a courteous and studious student, a light-hearted friend and an enthusiasm coworker.

I think my carrier path has also showed that I have developed as a person.

Before my graduation I was working as a marketing assistant, later on as a customer service representative. In the beginning of 2003 I was ready to establish my own firm and became and entrepreneur. In the same year I published a book âBusiness in Polandâ and the publisher Mâ¦â¦â¦.. has been selling out successfully.
I was a language and culture trainer for Xâ¦.. businessmen and individuals. I was able to help different organizations and companies with translations and interpreting. That was the time when I realized that I love to teach.

My studies in psychology at Wâ¦. University give me bigger possibilities to be a good teacher. In order to achieve a good command of the language, it is important that the students master all the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Therefore my students are always encouraged to speak up in class. I have created the English on-line exercises page when making the school web pages to give students opportunities to study in different environments. Different international projects have been also part of my teaching methods. It is very important for me to have a positive influence on a studentâs learning process.

Since I hold a degree in business thinking about my future career I see myself in a position of a vocational teacher.

When studying at W.. University I began to see vocational education in a different light. It's what good education is all about. It involves students. It asks them to work together. It asks them to put their "book learning" to work to solve real problems. That is, education that helps people learn to solve problems, be creative, and adjust to new situations. Itâs using theory in practice.

I thing there are many challenges in my own professional development as a teacher.

The challenges of teaching have certainly not stood still. Teaching students today is very different than in previous generations. There are much higher expectations by students, families and society. Students need to know more now than ever before to succeed. Yet, students are also less in awe of authority than in previous generations. Like never before, there is a broader diversity of students, both culturally and in terms of how they learn.

Teaching and learning are complex, and teachers need time to learn and experiment with new concepts in the classroom, just as their students do. Principles of effective teaching and learning for students extend to effective professional development for teachers. It should be driven by an analysis of teachers' goals; it should involve teachers in the identification of what they need to learn; it should be organized around collaborative problem solving; it should be continuous and adequately supported; it should be information rich; it should include opportunities for the development of theoretical understanding; and it should be part of a comprehensive change process. Teachers need time to reflect on the meaning of education in a pluralistic society, on the relationships between teachers and learners, and on social attitudes about language and culture that affect students.

I think that the vocational teaching profession should be changing in relation to the changes in the working environment. Vocational institutions should develop fully the talents and capabilities of the students. The industry is still changing and new jobs are being created all the time. Many branches of studies should introduce subjects which are in particular demand on the labour market. In particular, when students leave school they should have employment related skills and an understanding of the work environment; they should have career options and pathways as a foundation for, and positive attitudes towards vocational education and training further education, and life-long learning.

Different teaching methods should be introduced to achieve the goals. In many countries schools have already adopted E-learning courses or even the whole programs are instructed via the internet. Also evening programs or the modular study system should be introduced in all vocational institutions, which would increase the number of students.

English Polytechnic Masterâs programs should also come in force as soon as possible.

I would like to have the opportunity to enroll in the Hâ¦.Vocational Teacher Education Programme in English to put my knowledge into a higher standard.

In addition, working and attending this programme , I will have opportunities to meet people from various professions, offering me different points of view and contributing to my flexibility and creativity, besides the cultural and language gains. Moreover, I have come to recognize that a deep and solid education provided by your programme is needed for me to pursue my career in teaching area. Therefore, if I successfully graduate from the programme and I will make practical use of what I have learned.

I hope that I will be accepted as an an applicant of the Vocational Teacher Education Programme. I understand that admission to the programme is competitive, but I am also confident that I am qualified and eager, and prepared to meet all of its challenges. With my good command of English, I will not have difficulty in studying subjects taught in this language. I have also taken part in many social activities and worked with foreigners, so I am able to adapt to a constantly changing work environment and maintain good working relationships with individuals of different cultural backgrounds.

My leisure interests and activities.

Leonardo Da Vinchi said âIron rusts from disuse, stagnant water loses its purity, even so does inaction sap the vigors of the mind.â

This saying expresses my attitude to life.

I am quite an active person and it is very important to me to stay engaged in life with activities, which lead to life satisfaction. Therefore I try to fill my free time completely. That helps me broaden my horizons as well as make my life interesting and full of positive emotions.

My leisure activities are from different spheres, so I could develop extensively both my mind and body. I can integrate them in three groups, which are education, photograph and sport.

Education includes both learning foreign language and increasing my professional level.

Learning English improves my memory ability, broadens my knowledge about other cultures and gains access to the information, which is not available in Russian language.

For example, as to foreign literature, all we have in Russian is other peopleâ translation, which presents a novel or a story in the light, a translator understands it. Sometimes translated books lose original charm and language style that, I consider, is very important. Consequently I have an ability to enjoy reading original books and think about described events in the way I acknowledge them.

Beside fiction I read some articles related to audit and accounting in English using resources of British Council virtual library and other sources. Also I surf Euro News web-side and discover that sometimes foreign journalists have different points of view on situations, have happened somewhere. This additional information can be beneficial to forming my own opinion on something.

Developing and improving the skills I already have, allows me to be competitive along with getting pleasure from meeting new people and spending time with my friends.

My other interest is photographing. I find it exciting to catch an interesting moment by my camera. If pictures need to be improved, special software allows me to do that. I can put away garbage, change the background or fix something. The best photograph I put into frames, which hang at home and in the office I work.

Finally, sport, in summer I go cycling. If I am on leave I try to spend this time near the nature â I go hiking and riding horse. I do yoga exercises regularly. Yoga teaches how to relax and concentrate. It works in three ways â helps keep fit, clears my mind and gives me energy for studying and working.

These activities and interests make my life many-sided, completed and assist to achieve set challenges.
