Hi,
I would like to know the best word to define the work carried out by students during the academic year which is also assessed, but itn't a final examination, a thesis, a dissertation or a internship report. Generally it consists of doing research on a given topic and writing a papers, as a result.
I've come up with some ideas, but I would like to know some English native speakers opinions. Here they are:
- Academic papers,
- Essays,
- Term papers,
- Academic assignments,
- Coursework.

Please, here is the essay i wrote, could any kind person help me to fix it?

Language is undeniably an essential implement for people to communicate with each other. Without language, human being can only use body movement or draw pictures for communication which always leads misunderstanding. For example, the ancestors of human being evaluated slowly because they did not create language to effectively share and record their knowledge. Therefore, language can only be beneficial but not harmful. If people study more than one language, it does not only help people success in societies but also in schools and businesses.

Second language can help people to success in societies. Trying to imagine that if two people do not have the same language, how would they communicate with each other? Not only do languages assist people to socialize in order to meet friends easily, but people also find a way to be close with their grandparents. Because now people travel countries to countries for improving their quality of lives, relatives are over the world. Therefore, lacking of their original languages are very common in our new generation. If a child who only speaks English loves his or her grandparents who only speak Chinese, the child has to learn a second language Chinese in order to communicate with his old relative. In short, learning a second language could help people to build strong relationship with the people whom they love.

If students are comfortable with their second language, it helps them learn at schools. For international students, it is always true because containing enough a language is one of the requirements to go into university. For example, if foreign students who want to study at University of Calgary are not capable of using English, they are not allowed to take any undergraduate course. However, for those international students who are already familiar with speaking, reading, writing and listening in English, they avoid taking some English programs. In other words, they save more time in order to take their major.

All employers would like their co-workers are bilingual. Employers would rather pay more money and hire the bilinguists in order to improve their competitiveness. As a result, bilinguists have more jobs opportunities. It does not only benefit the bilinguists but also the companies. For instance, there are a lot of Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese speakers living in the area around a Chinese supermarket. As a result, the Chinese supermarket has to hire some employees who can speak neither Cantonese nor Mandarin so that the employees are able to communicate with Cantonese and Mandarin speaker customers. For that reason, the bilinguists can use their second language in a proper job, the company is more attractive to draw customers to shop because they have flexible language speakers as their employees, and the customers feel more convenience to shop.

Wherever people are living, studying, and working, second languages improve peopleâs ability of meeting new friends, the skill of learning, and the capacity of earning money. Therefore, it is always not late to learn a second language. Maybe there are billion people learning a second language now.

The advantages and/or disadvantages of English as a global language

There is a heat discussion whether English is suitable for a global language or not. I think there are two advantages and one disadvantage of English as a global language as following.
The first advantage is that many people in the world are using English as the fact. Language learning is not so easy that this fact is advantageous for English.
The second advantage is that future language trends are for English. For example , in China, one of the biggest country in the world , many young people are learning English, it is said.
The disadvantage is that there are many kinds of English such as British, American, or other forms of English. This would annoy English learners, so this is the disadvantage .
In conclusion, in spite of the disadvantage, I think English is suitable for a global language because of the two advantages that I mentioned.

Phew, there is a lot to get hold of here!

I think that mountainhiker's suggested structure will work very well for this letter and you have worked hard to make improvements to your original. I think you still need to plan your letter a little more clearly as at the moment it is all a bit random and I think you have too much irrelevant information

My suggestions are:

paragraph one: Who you are, what you want to do, why you want to do it.

'I am a Vietnamese citizen living in Holland and I would like to apply for the Bachelor of Liberal of Art 's Degree program in Social Science department at University College Utrecht. I am interested in this programme as deeper knowledge of social, cultural, political and economic processes will certainly help with my future career. I want to gain a solid background in social science.'

paragraph two: Expand on who you are

'I graduated in English Language and Culture in July 2000 from the University of Vietnam. My degree focuses on English language, English literature, English and American culture. I then worked for Song Huong Magazine, writing their Foreign Literature page for three years. I also taught English to children in Vietnam during the summers.

Paragrah three: expand on what you want to do and why you want to do it.

'Last year, I started writing for Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, a major Vietnamese newspaper. Through my daily writing, I came to recognize that my knowledge of economic, politics and culture are somewhat limited, which is why I would like to study these further. I would like to continue working in research or journalism after this course, and think it would be a great advantage to stay in Europe.'

Paragraph four: summary and thank them for their interest.

You have included all the following information but I do not think it is relevant to your application. They know the advantages to studying social sciences. It sounds as though you are the university trying to sell the course to a student.

Social Science is not only interested to study to know generally but It also necessary in career. You sometimes will have international meetings If you did not have any experience of social science or in wrong understanding, what will be happened in your performance in front of your partners? .â No education is complete without experienceâ â no experience how can we doâ that is true. So I am, before doing my further goals.

The section on use of English language could be worked into your letter if you wish, but I do not think you need anywhere as much language. Again, you are not writing this letter to sell to them the advantages of using English. In any case, they might think that if it is so important to you to study in English, why aren't you applying to an English university? If you really want to mention it, (and I assume that the course will be taught in English?) you could put something in about your standard of English making you suitable for studying at this level in English.

In addition, studying and working on completely international environments, using a second language like a native language of English in each different field of social science is very important. Because we will have to use English language to research in professional books of the world and writing essays or reports for big conferences as well as presentations. At last but not least, according a large intellection of Social Science and a professional ability of language, I will have many advantages to my special goals in opportunities of career.
