I was just wondering when do you use the expression "Say what". I presume it's the same as "Come again", right?

They could be the same, but "come again" is also used when you haven't heard the speaker correctly, or don't understand his meaning.

"Say what," on the other hand is usually used when the listener well understands the speaker's meaning and wants to take issue with it. "I can't believe you really said that."

I remember my amazement when Clint Eastwood used that expression in the "old west" movie The Unforgiven - like wearing a wristwatch in Ben Hur.

Again, I have to question your motive. In English, pat and pan have the same vowel - a fact I presume MW endorses. You choose to pronounce pan differently for personal reasons. Why should the syllable break change that? Whatever the test is that justifies changing the a in pan, apply that same test to the a in mammal, and make your decision.

You've said you make a similar change when the a is followed by r. You've said that MW endorses your change as an option. (standard a - pa-rut; your a - pair-uht)

I'm sure you noticed that the change to your sound is accompanied by a shift of the r back to the first syllable. You might say this model solves your dilemma. In ma-mul, for example, if you want to use your special a, simply move the m back to the first syllable and your problem disappears: (mam-uhl).

But so far you've neglected to give us a phonetic rendering of how you pronounce pan and how you might pronounce mammal if you retained your special a. Is it like the a in pair-uht?

Hi,

I am an attorney working for the government. The duties of my job position mostly involve considering legal requests called "petitions." My job title is "Petitions Attorney." I am unclear as to when the first letters in "Petitions Attorney" should be capitalized.

This is a matter of style and convention rather than of grammar. The usual convention is not to capitalize, unless it is in a context where you really want to stress that this is your job title.

eg I ask you what kind of work you do. Here, I don't really care about your official job title.

eg I am reading the employment section of your resume. I expect it to tell me the job titles for your previous periods of employment.

Finally, as a general comment, I would say that in modern English, writers try to avoid having a lot of capitals in a sentence. Except, of course, at the start of a sentence.

Are the following correct or incorrect? I wouldn't say they are wrong, but I don't think I'd capitalize.

I am a petitions attorney.

My coworkers include 10 other petitions attorneys.

Petitions attorneys are a type of attorney working for the federal government.

Petitions attorney John Smith has worked for the government for 10 years.

Five petitions attorneys were transferred from location X to location Y.

I look forward to learning the correct way to capitalize the words in the sentences above.

Are you sure your title uses the plural word 'petitions'? Usually, in such compound expressions, the first noun is singular.

eg We say 'car mechanic' but not 'cars mechanic', 'book seller' but not 'books seller'.

Hi,

Not long after midnight on February 3, 1943, a German submarine fired three torpedoes at the U.S.A.T. Dorchester, a transport vessel, and scored a direct hit.

To begin with, what does a transport vessel refer to? Is it a transport vessel for soldiers or supplies? It could be either. The term 'troop transport' is/was commonly used when soldiers were involved. 'Supplies' does have a military sound, whereas 'cargo' sounds more civilian.

The term 'U.S.A.T.' shows that this ship belonged to the US army.

Second, the term "scored a direct hit" sounds like a sports jargon to me though I presume it indicates "hit the bull's eye." I see this phrase as one that started in warfare and was later used in the sports area. A lot of sports jargon seems to consist of war expressions.

Could you shed more light on it concerning its origin? No, sorry. But I have always associated it with war. Try checking the 'Net.

They don't come cheap!

The sign's inventor, Lars Christensen, hopes to persuade authorities to test the system in various locations around Denmark soon--but at over NZ$ 4,500 each, they don't come cheap.

I presume they don't come cheap very colloquial and convey the same idea as they aren't very cheap.

I wonder if there are subtle differences between the two expressions except that the former is very colloquial.

Would you please edit and modify this letter?
