Is that wrong to say "football competition / tournament"?-- It sounds wrong to me unless it involves a number of teams, as at the Olympics.

I wouldn't know how to spell this word. Most dictionaries seem to go for "tae kwon do", but it's possible that there are a number of variants, all acceptable.

Some people might not consider capital "T" incorrect, but to me it's just Random Capitalisation Of Important Or Unusual Words, which I don't much like.

He also attends tuition classes.

Seems a peculiar thing to say. What sort of classes are there (in this sense) other than classes that give tuition?

Absolutely! I read in a newspaper that the English have logged on to the official website of the Euro 2008 more than any other nation. I find that a little peculiar because they aren't even playing. On the other hand, Finns were number 4 on that list and we're no good at football. That statistic is even more peculiar! Football is a minor sport here. There may be anything between 700 and 7,000 spectators at a match, no more. We're an ice hockey country. All boys are nuts about ice hockey. Every kid wants to become a Teemu SelÃ¤nne and make millions!

Actually, I think there are only about 15 to 20 countries where top quality ice hockey is played, but that doesn't seem to matter in the least when Finns choose their favourite sport.

A surprising number of popular spectator sports, for example football or baseball, started in Europe or the USA in the nineteenth century.

Can we use appeared instead of started?
Both of them mean "began to exist" but my book indicates that started is the only acceptable word here.
I think it's because start is used for sports but I'm not sure.
Please explain.

I really don't like football matches to be decided on penalties, as so often seems to be the case.

My proposal would be, if scores are level after extra-time - then the match should be awarded to the side that had the most shots on target during the whole match (extra-time included). This would encourage more attacking football. If each team has the same total of shots on target, then number of corners should be used to decide it.

All these statistics are monitored, as those who take positions on them with betting houses know only too well.

Anyway, one thing's for sure - England won't win.

Through History, weâve seen that American people are proud and want to manage the world. Meanwhile, French people know how to live and they have a more collectivism mentality. According to several studies, the US is a more âmasculineâ country than France. Weâre about to study if this is a reality or not.

1Â°/ First, we can compare educational values between these two countries.

The American people educational values are rather funded on individualism.

Each person must show his value to be recognized, the merit is more important than the link formed (relationship) with others. Pupils and students have to be independent, self-confident, their teacher assists them in work but they donât give solutions. They also have to be competitive.

For instance, intercollegiate sporting events are promoted in American football and basketball. These competitions attract not only young people but all sport fans.

In France, educational values are rather funded on collectivism.

The ties between people are privileged, it doesnât matter if a person undergoes many failures his family and his friends will always support him. Devotion in relationships is essential because people donât stand to be alone.

As students, weâre used to partying several times by week, we enter in student associations to share our ideals with others and we think that is the victory of groups which is the more important.

For example, in soccer games, one player goal is the equip goal. (but 1 joueur est le but de lâÃ©quipe)

According to Geert Hofstede (a press article writer), these points show that the US is a more masculine country than France. I think we can reveal there is another aspect of this topic with gender ideas.

2Â°/ The power that is a more masculine idea can be illustrated by American will to possess big things.

Indeed, American cars are big like 4x4 or pick up, they like to eat big burgers.

They use an amazing budget for their movies with many special effects and they often contain fights like Rambo, Terminator or Rocky. Each time, we have the feeling that American glory is bet and itâs always American people who win.

Then, American comics imply heroes with a super strength and a nice physical appearance like Superman or Hulk.

On the contrary, French culture hires the small things and products are adapted to family which is a more feminine idea.

There are small French cars for young people the Twingo, the Clio or the Smart and weâre used to taking a little break with a small cup of coffee.

In France, there are often humoristic or romantic movies like movie of the moment âBienvenue chez les châtisâ which is the best French humoristic movie of the year.

As we see through all these examples America owns more masculine ideas than France and we really saw a gap between these two mentalities.

3Â°/ However, the feminine culture in France is limited.

We also have a competitive policy as we se through a job or college interview. The selection is tough, there are some oral or written exams and many people are refused.

The vision of soccer as a âsweetâ sport is far from reality because many players are hurt during the games.

Furthermore, there are French action movies like âLes riviÃ¨res pourpresâ, âNikitaâ and âLeonâ which compete with American super production.

In my opinion, the association between masculine culture with men who search for success and power, and feminine culture with women who look after their family is a stereotype. It tends to disappear today, women are more and more independent and they can be companyâs bosses or minister.

For instance, the French company CHANEL is lead by a woman.

To conclude, obviously the US is a more âmasculineâ culture than France. But in my view, there isnât a best culture because self-confidence and relationships are essential to have a happy live.

We can wonder if the promotion of power and success could not lead to abuse.

No, it's not a sport like tennis.

If you can come up with a rule at all (which will still have umteen exceptions) you'll use "play" with sports that have rules, opponents, scoring, etc. Play tennins, play lacrosse, play football, play badminton.

You "do" karate or judo, but you simply fence, or swim, or run.

Now, why don't you "play fencing" even though it has rules, oppoenents, etc? While on the other hand, you play solitaire, without an opponent. So the exceptions will be very high in number indeed!

Letter of MotivationKamran Huseynzade Dear Sir or Madam, I appreciate this opportunity to provide further background information in support of my application for entrance to the International Business program at the University of Maastricht for the 2008 autumn term. First of all, I would like to give a little information about myself. I was born in Baku - the capital city of Azerbaijan on the 26^th of September 1989. The nationality of me is Azerbaijani. My parents are interested in study (they are both teachers), therefore they give great importance to my education. After my 6^th grade at the state secondary school, I passed the entrance exam of one of the most well-known high schools in my country. Since then, I continued my education studying at Baku âDede Gorgudâ Private Turkish High School. My future profession was very significant for me, so I began to think about my career when I was in earlier grades. For a good career, I know that English is important. Attending to such high school presented me an opportunity to improve my English. At the high school technical subjects, like mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, plus, computer science were taught in English. While I was studying at high school I determined some points to reach, so at the 8^th grade, I started to prepare getting a place in the national mathematics olympiad team. Eventually, at the 9^th grade I was accepted to the team. In May 2005, I was in Almaty (Kazakhstan) to participate in the International Mathematic Project Competition â 2005. It was successful for me, as my project took first place and I got a golden medal. I was not successful only at studies, but also sport is my lifeâs great part. Iâm very interested in football and good at playing table tennis. In 2006, there was a football championship among private high schools and we were awarded gold medals. Itâs obvious that the more languages you know, the more successful you are. Besides, fluently speaking in my mother tongue, I know English, Russian, Turkish, and German. Being raised in a bilingual city and in a multicultural environment presented me great chances to enlarge my cultural knowledge and of course, my language ability, too. Russian is considered as a second language in my country, so learning Russian was not hard for me. Almost, most of people know Russian in my country. Turkish is also widespread in our environment and itâs much near to my mother tongue. But German was not easy to learn, as I attended to language course of German Embassy in Baku. During courses I established my basic German knowledge. Now at the university I get German classes as my second foreign language. After 9^th, it was time to think about the university I want to study. I was searching something appropriate for me, for my character. During school years, I was communicable and my organizing skill helped me to go forward in most areas. Due to being an organizer of social activities at school, I realized that the best field for my future career is something related to administration. When I graduated from school, I got 668.75 points out of 700 points in the university entrance exam and gained a place in the International Economic Relations faculty of Azerbaijan State Economics University. The exam included Mathematics, Geography, Mother tongue, English, and History of Azerbaijan. Because of getting high point in the exam I get presidential scholarship. This success convinced me getting higher points and serving for my country. But I never wanted to stop on what I achieved, so I was making a plan to endure my education in a respected European university such as University of Maastricht. I was wondering what sector to choose for studying abroad. I have already known that it must be something related to my present faculty (International Economic Relations). Also it must be the sector that I can express myself best and use my all skills. Interest in international economic life and economic news also affected my decision.
