How would you feel to find a 300 thousand check?

I was wondering about the guy who may found my check. It was 300 thousand Nakfa check. God, how did I lose that check? It was in the summer of 2006 the time was around 11:00 oâclock still in my bedroom sleeping and listening to music. Suddenly I heard someone knocking my door; it was my mom who was knocking my door.

My mom told me to weak up and eat my breakfast, I didnât really listen to her and again I went back to the bed, but I couldnât sleep and I went to my dadâs office. Everyone was quiet and working, I walked in and nobody really cared about me. I sat in the office and started to read a newspaper, which surprised office workers but after 2 minutes I started to nag the driver if he can teach me how to drive a car. Everybody was annoyed but there was nothing they can do about it, even though they told me to hush they know I am not going to discontinue talking.

I went out and stand by the door and I started to look at the kids who were playing football. While I was staring at the kids I saw my mom car coming and I went to upstairs to watch TV because I wasnât allowed to be in the office. I got upstairs and started watching TV unexpectedly I saw my mom in the TV room with an angry face.

âWhat did you do in the officeâ asked my mom

âNothing I didnât even go to the officeâ I said

âSo are you telling me that Jacob is a lairâ my mom said

Then I knew Jacob already told her about what I did in the office and I realize the only thing I had to do was admit. And I said sorry for the first time in my entire life. My mom left the room and I started to watch TV again.

It was around 1 oâclock when my mom called me to eat lunch, while we were eating lunch I asked my mom if I can start to work in the office and get some money. My mom said ok and she also allowed me that I can start to working in the office after 2 oâclock. I also promised her that I am going to behave well.

I felt like crashing his head with the chair but I smiled like I wasnât angry. Meanwhile I heard the phone ringing and I rushed to the phone and I picked the phone it was Hanna. Hanna is the business manger at my dadâs company, and she asked me if she could talk to Jacob. I gave the phone to Jacob, when he finished talking.

âwhy did she called?â I asked Jacob

âbecause she likes youâ said Jacob

âI am seriousâ I said

âshe called to ask me if I can send her the check nowâ said Jacob

âWhat is the check for?â I asked

âsince it is the end of the month she need to pay all the bills, like she has to pay the workers their salary and some other bills like the electric billsâ said Jacob.

âso why donât you send the check if she needs it?â I asked again

âbecause the driver is not here,â said Jacob

While we were talking my mom came and asked Jacob if anybody called her. He told her that Hanna needs the check before 3 oâclock because the bank is going to be closed in 4 oâclock and the bank is closed during weekends. I saw my mom signing the check and putting it in an envelope. But on the way out she met people that she had a appointment with, my mom completely forgot about it but. And she gave the check to me and told me to go to the company and give them. I couldnât believe about what just happened, and I checked the envelope put it was closed.

When she took the guests to her office she called me and told me to change my clothes and go to the company. I didnât hear my momâs advice and I went straightly to the door. I carried the envelope and started walking, I was wearing shorts and an ugly t-shirt and everybody was staring at me. The company is about 1 km away from my dadâs office I felt like taking a taxi but I didnât have my wallet with me.

The sun was burning and I was tired. I thought I saw classmate that I knew before, when I got closer to him. I realized it was Yosief, he is my old friend. He greeted me gloriously and begged me if I can go to his house and play a game or watch TV together.

âI have to give this envelope first to my dadâs companyâ I said

âdonât worry about it, we can ask my brother to give the check to your dadâs ompany when we get homeâ said Yosief.

I agreed with him and we started to walk to his house. His house wasnât far from the place we met and we got to his house after 5min. He already had his own key and we straightly went to the TV room, nobody was in the house even his brother wasnât home. and I asked âWhere is your brotherâ.

âdonât worry he is going to be here in minute anywaysâ said Yosief.

âhow do you know?â I asked again.

âbecause he always comes home around this time, he doesnât come home in the noonâ said Yosief.

We started to play video game. While we were playing suddenly we heard someone opening the door, it was his mom. She came in said âhiâ, after that we turned off the TV and we went outside it was dark. When I checked the time it was around 6:30, I couldnât believe it and I asked Yosief if I can barrow the game and go home. He gave me the CD and I started to walk home. When I got home I straightly went to my bedroom to play the game Yosief gave me, and I started to play until the maid came and told me to eat my dinner. Since I was tired after dinner I straightly went to my bedroom.

âSimon, open the door,â said my mom. It was eight oâclock she never woke me up that early in summer time.

When I opened the door âI been knocking your door for 10minutesâ said my mom.

âReally, why did you woke me up, itâs only eight oâclock?â I said.

âTo whom did you give the check yesterday?â said my mom.

âWhat check?â I said I already completely forgot about it.

âThe check I gave you yesterday in the office,â said my mom.

I started to think about what I did before that day. And my mom was right, but I didnât remember where I putted the check. I checked everywhere but I couldnât find it and I told my mom I couldnât find it. My mom was nervous and told me it was a lot of money and she canât void the check by calling to the bank, because the bank is closed weekends.

âHow much money is itâ I asked

I couldnât believe that I lost that much money. While we were talking I heard the phone rang and the maid gave the phone to my mom. It was Yosiefâs mother. My mom and Yosiefâs mom knows each other for long, and she told my mom she found an envelope that doesnât belong to her. She explained my mom what it looks like and it was the envelope that I lost.

From that day I knew how much my parents trust me, if they didnât trusted me they wouldnât gave me the stupid check which was painted by blue ink. And I still couldnât believe how stupid I were before that day.

Sting as a Sport

We are living in exciting times in journalism. There are 28 news channels giving people round the clock information on politics, the economy and also on what to buy, what to wear, whom to vote for and what the weather would be like in their cities. In a pluralistic democracy driven by market economy, we need all the information we can get to make our choices on everything from political parties to mobile handsets. That's the good news. The bad news is that such channels sometimes run the risk of running 24-hour theatres in an unending drama where the actors are real-life characters. Politicians, film-stars, sports-stars and unsuspecting villagers get dozens of microphones thrust in their faces the minute they come anywhere close to fame, or more often, infamy.

Technology is pushing the envelope each day and sometimes the envelopes are full of crisp Rs 500 notes. Once the bait is taken, the spectacle begins.

Sting operations are becoming synonymous with investigative journalism. They have grainy videos, muffled audios and at the end, that visual delight â the slow motion. It makes rivetting viewing like a great goal on the football field. And the bigger the star scoring a goal, the more lasting the image. That brings us to the basic question â is it sport, entertainment or journalism?

The technology to conduct sting operations has been around for long, but journalists around the world have largely shied away from it. No Pulitzer prize has ever been awarded for a sting operation. The Centre for Investigative Journalism based in San Francisco has never published a story written on the evidence from a hidden camera or tape recorder. In fact many reputed news organisations like the BBC have laid down explicit guidelines not to use hidden tape recorders or cameras. Investigative journalism is still understood to be an old-fashioned plod through official files and corporate dossiers.

But in India, each time a sting operation is beamed, a debate rages about the ethical questions surrounding this phenomenon. Are politicians fair game to be stung while corporate honchos remain immune however much they indulge in corruption? Are MPs caught taking cash for questions on camera more culpable than those misappropriating funds meant for development of constituencies?

The fact is that sting operations have not had any lasting effect. Bangaru Laxman managed not only his political rehabilitation but ensured his wife's election from his earlier constituency. George Fernandes reclaimed his berth in the Atal Behari Vajpayee cabinet. After many Delhi police officers were caught taking bribes, the buzz is that all such deals are now being struck outside the state where there are no cameras lurking. Going by the evidence so far, all that sting operations have been able to remove are the symptoms, not the disease.

The disease is corruption in public life. In a country where disposable incomes are rising, everyone wants cash, which at times is caught on camera. Department of Public Enterprises figures say that the per capita annual emoluments of 18.7 lakh public sector employees is Rs 2.24 lakh.

That's a princely salary of Rs 18,674 a month. The government spends more than Rs 32 lakh annually on an MP, but the cash component is is a measly Rs 12,000 per month. No wonder all the MPs but one caught on camera were happily accepting paltry amounts. Public servants are soft targets for sting operations and new canon-fodder for news television which turns this news as blood-sport.

I have no sympathies for those caught on camera. Law-breakers should be punished, whether they take cash for questions or jump a red-light. But then every traffic signal in the country doesn't have a camera attached to it. Moreover, it will be boring TV if all the traffic violators were shown for 24 hours, seven days a week. Similarly, a kind of fatigue factor will soon set in even with regard to such exposes on television.

What is at stake here is the credibility of journalism itself. Can we graduate from MPs to ministers? Can we get the commissioners of police instead of constables? If we don't get the big fish, people will certainly stop caring about the minnows in the net. Research at the Pew Research Center says that 45 per cent of Americans believe "almost nothing" of what they read in newspapers and 37 per cent of what they see on TV news. A General Social Survey by the University of Chicago says that in comparison to other institutionsâ (including the government) confidence in the media has declined. We seem to have taken our media model from the US. Let us be mindful of the pitfalls.

Futsal is an indoor version of football (soccer). Its name is derived from the Portuguese futebol de salão and the Spanish fútbol sala/de salón, which can be translated as 'indoor football'.

Characteristic of a âroundâ character is his development throughout the play, film or whatever, while a âflatâ character does not change at all. Therefore we absolutely must call Mr. Bamrah a âroundâ character, as he, too, is against Jess having an english boy friend at first, but then in the last scene anticipates that Joe and Jess are going to kiss each other and wiseley tuns his wifeâs head aside so that she cannot see it. He knows perfectly well Jesmindaâs mother would not /fancy it too much/be fond of it.So it is quite obvious that he does not disapprove of such a relationship anymore, in almost the same manner as he was the first who did not disapprove of her âfootball careerâ and even encouraged her to leave her sisterâs wedding. I got the impression he learnt from his own mistakes and does not want to see his daughter suffering the same way he did.

and i have one more question.

Sometime when using the conjunction "and,but,or etc." , two clause are parallel.

For example

(1)John play football. John play basketball.

(combined) John play football and basketball <<in this case we can omit John and play.

(2)The tube has been taken.The tube has been broken.

(combined)The tube has been taken and broken. (The tube and has been can be omitted)

does it mean that any of the words repeated can be omitted if they are preceded by the conjunction(and,but,or etc.)?
