Grossly informal for most things, however.

Formal letter writing should always be addressed 'Dear Sir' in such cases of ambiguity - not even 'Dear Sir/Madam'.

Gender equality might be a quaint philosophy to live by, but it doesn't hold up in the archaic world or written etiquette. And, I'm afraid, it's not really a 'choice', either...far too much of a liberal phenomenon.

Cast any feminism you might have stored up aside and - for letter writing, at least - check your Debrett's.

  Well, I just read the list of members online and found this:

  The first two sentences are in a present tense while the  last
  one uses Past Simple. What's the reason?

We had exams on Letter Writing in schools.

I wish to improve on my writing. What critieria are needed for formal letter/ report/ account writing ? Are there any examples on formal words used? How should i start the writing? What about the tone used. How can i sound less offending and informal? How should I end?

An example of our school paper:

E.g : Your school has recieved a gift of money from a former student was is now famous. The money can be spent in any way and your principal has asked for ideas.

Write a formal letter to your principal with your plan. You must include the following:

- How much money was given.
-How you will spend the money.
-Why you will spend the money in this way.
-How you will help to put the plan into action
-Why you think the former student will be pleased.

You must cover all five points in detail in your letter. You may add details of your own if you wish.

I'm very glad that you've assured me the right way to write a good business letter. I've been struggling with this point since I left Uni. In Uni, my lecturer always encouraged the students to use modern-style approach in business letter writing, that are - direct, simple, consice and clear, which is exactly what you proposed. But when I actually practiced that on my first job, I was critised so badly by my superior for having bad sense in writing formal letter. Here are some of the examples I could still remember she had corrected on my letter,

"Apend herewith is the...." instead of " I have attached a......",

"Kindly contact the undersigned ....." instead of " Please give me a call...."

"We offer our humblest apologies for the unnecessary inconvenience that you have been casued in this instance." instead of "Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience caused."

And I remember she told me this, "To make your recepient look up the dictionary is better than they read and think the writer is a high school dropout."

I was unable to figure what she meant then. But that wasn't important to me anymore, I quitted the job after 2 months

I'm writing to request a temporary reduction in my weekly hours. Specifically, I'd like to adjust my hours so that I leave at X p.m. every afternoon for the period of June 5 through August 28, 2006. I have the opportunity this summer to volunteer in the X program at the local Parks and Recreation, but it requires that I be there by y p.m. every afternoon.

Can you say something about how your company values communitiy participation, how this could in any way help you with your job skills, any connection to work? Will you lose benefits by going to a part-time basis, that you should acknowledge in this request?

I need to write a formal letter to my boss QUICKLY asking if I can go from full time to part time hours. I want to volunteer at a park and rec for the summer in afternoon hours. Please help me come up with a format for my letter, I dont even know where to begin!!!!!
