If you're aiming for a British accent, the vowel sound in the words can and are very different. In North American English, the vowel is the same for both, but /t/ is usually realised as a glottal stop at the end of "can't".

I'd agree with your lists, YC. Some singers seem to have used a stylised accent (Syd Barrett, Ray Davies, Bowie) to avoid sounding AmE in the 60s/early 70s. Then, as you say, with punk you get an exaggerated urban BrE accent. I think that was made
