Personal changed feelings/opinions/attitude towards English language learning

    I am convinced that English language learning are stressful and frustrating before. I feel nervous when everyone is focus on me and when teacher is listening carefully. I believe this feeling comes from my self- doubt. I think classmates are step ahead of me. I also cannot correctly pronounce some sounds and sets of sound. To be frank, I have thought that English is no more important because I am in Chinese Language and Literature Programme. I no need to improve my English anymore.

However, my friends told me that mastery of the English language is important. Hong Kong being a service - oriented economy, the advantage of having a competent English-speaking work force has become all the more improtant. I know that being a Chinese Language and Literature student is only an excuse to avoid learning English (You shouldn't think like that! Nothing wrong with being a Chinese major.). This thought only badly affects my interest and progress of learning English. I do know that if I lose the interest of learning English, my English cannot improve anymore. I need to find some ways to prevent feeling so embarrassed.

     There are ways for me to prevent feeling so embarrassed. I think the most practical way is to improve English. I should study English continuously. When I find some words that I cannot pronouce, I will check the electronic dictionary immediately. I will also try to speak English with my friends. I believe I can speak English fluently if I often do that. My friends can also kindly point out my grammatical mistakes. They will not laugh at my absurd mistakes. Therefore, I will not feel embarrassed anymore.

You need to begin learning the correct grammar start with the basics and work through it, with good resources and grammar help with exercises, as with all languages you need to practice and study it. This is a good method but you will need to use a dictionary for you to understand what the words mean.

If i read a lot of books in english, will my english skills increase [improve]

And if i watch english films...

Reading and watching materials are a very good source for learning english but as i said above you need to know what the words mean and how to use them etc. There are lots of grammar, reading, writing exercises available so you can use these to help you understand and start learning basic phrases.

For example start to write sentences about yourself and then read this aloud and practice, practice, practice. There are lots of audio files and resources that you can use to help you with your pronounciation etc. If you can pay for lessons this would be the best advantage for you, getting practice with a native speaker is the best way to really understand and learn english.

What do i have to do so that my english would be nice in 1-5 years?

If you do all the above there is absolutely no reason why you should not learn english within your time span. With determination and practice you will succeed.

Dear forum visitors,

I have already posted this in some other forums but I think it is not so ugly to consider it my little contribution to your English writing community.

Seems as though most of you are bored with reading ready essay samples accompanied with help-me-correct-this appeals. You have been learning English and would rather look into the innards of essay creation process to get something useful for your own improvement. So would I.

Iâd like to present my strategy to go about essay writing. If you do not like, tell me why. If you do, I am glad to be helpful.

Well, here is the task I found in a textbook on IELTS.

Enormous effort is put into researching and marketing 'the perfect potato crisp' while research into stress at work, for example, is ignored. How important are staff working conditions? Should employers research and improve the working conditions of their staff or should they concentrate more on their product?

The question as it stands implies you should speculate about what comes first â product or workers?
So it is an opinion essay.

If you decided on an opinion essay, give it a proper structure.

1) Introduction is a must. You donât believe you could get a good grade without introduction, do you?
2) 3 paragraphs are also necessary â three is a magical number. It can do wonders to your overall band score.
3) Conclusion. You do not want to infuse your examiner with a feeling of incompleteness.

My opinions

I will try to be positive about work force. They really deserve to be cared about. I hope you feel the same. Some scholars call it brainstorming. Letâs storm our brains.

First of all, you should not wander off trying to find ideas in the darkest parts of your mind. We will get some obvious hints right from the assignment.

ââ¦ should they concentrate more on their product?...â Devious, but thank you anyway for bringing it up again.

I think they have already written the better part of the essay. We should only rephrase these expressions to avoid the offence of plagiarism.

Inquisitive minds will easily complete the list of ideas with their own suggestions. Hard thinkers like myself might as well stop brainstorming right here.

I know, I know â you are going to blame me for this, because it is not sufficient to develop 3 paragraphs.
But brainstorming never ends. I am far from assuming that you will stop thinking after 5 minutes of initial excessive brain work and will begin writing down words in mechanical way dreaming of buying a new car.
There is also vocabulary building part, and you have a clear structure of your essay.

Opinion = in support of workers

Introduction â topic and opinion in short
Paragraph 1 - staff working conditions are important
Paragraph 2 - employers should research and improve the working conditions
Paragraph 3 - concentrating more on their product is bad
Conclusion â short summary of paragraphs

Rephrasing ideas

In my opinion, it is the hardest part. It is about your vocabulary, so nothing we can do but remember some basic expressions. If you get stuck, just write down whatever comes to your mind looking at the key words of the assignment. You will sort it out later on. Some of the words you will insert into sentences, the rest will stay untouched. It surely pays off; you would not bother thinking of necessary vocabulary as you write.

research analyze, explore, inquire, investigate, look into, study
marketing advertising, promoting, pushing products
working condition situation, state, work load
stress at work pressure, nervous tension, difficulty; hardness, strain

Beginning to write

Introduction.

Earlier, we agreed to fight against staff overload. Let state the problem and introduce our opinion.
(Simply speaking, letâs rewrite the assignment).

Nowadays, most businesses concerned primarily with improving and pushing products at all costs, therefore neglecting the strain this strategy puts on their personnel. I believe it is of vital importance to restrain excessive work load. I also think employers should pay more attention to organizing friendly working environment for their employees.

OK, it is sleeping timeâ¦ I am tired and will have no more of this nonsense.
If you are not satisfied call my customer service, otherwise look forward to the next part â Paragraphs.

P.S. I might be absolutely wrong. Feel free to destroy my carefully thought-out system, but donât forget to suggest something more useful instead. I will appreciate if you supply supporting ideas for the paragraphs of the essay according to my plan.

Hi, IELTS (advanced). The more I read, the more patterns I saw; theyâre like chunks that I modify slightly as needed. Maybe thatâs why I believe itâs best to try for phrases rather than words and grammar: too difficult. My references? A very good library system and common English reference books (electronic resources on the Internet). Hereâs another variation on thoughts about crazy English.
1 verbalizing the words
2 getting out of the classroom
3 membership, humour and token reinforcements

Yesterday, I looked at a word puzzle on this site; really a very clever puzzle indeed. The funny thing was that I still didnât get it even after I saw the answer. Apparently the trick to solving the puzzle was in changing the way I approached the words on a printed page; pronunciation was crucial for solving the puzzle. Also, it demanded that I change my Gestalt view of words printed on a page: a totally different way for me to analyze language. Iâd like to relate this to the way Crazy English is presented in China too. Somehow, the âcall and responseâ style of teaching suspends normal contexts and helps a person learn in a new way.
Regarding the puzzle thread on this site, Iâm not surprised that the gifted people meet to play with the language; Iâm sure that play is the best way to learn to love anything that requires intelligence and effort. Anyhow, Iâm going to start a new approach to learning English now, to play with it. Iâve found real value in something that I have had no time for in the past.
In my next post, Iâd like to chat about the way American slaves developed gospel and blues cultures from calling to one another in the fields. These cultures seem to be soil for a force for change in American English today.

Best way to learn English?

Studying the English language in an English-speaking country is the best but not only way to learn the language. Do you agree with this statement.

Hi all.
I'm a new user of this forum. Coming straight to the point, I am taking IELTS soon. I need your help regarding Essay Writing and that's why I'm going to write an essay on the topic and I urge ...... please correct me where I'm wrong. Many thanks in anticipaton. Topic is,

"Studying the English language in an English-speaking country is the best but not only way to learn the language. Do you agree with this statement. Write 250 words".

"English has become a global language. While it's importance now cannot be subsided, it is essential to learn and get a hold of this language in due time. There are two types of schools of thoughts portraying different opinions regarding studying it. One says that a language must be learned in the country where it belongs to. Others are for the opinion of not being restricted to the above statement. I think, not a best, but a better way of learning a language is to study it in it's native land.

Expanding the view after looking closely I've come to the fact that one of the biggest advantage of learning English language in an English speaking country is the availability of enviroment possessing all the pre-requisites required to get a command on the language. Moreover, a student has the bonus of getting first-hand information and practice while interacting with the teachers and the native speakers as well. He is also aware of correct accent and pronounciation from the beginning. After all, he is able to get along with the barrier resisiting him to be familiar with the alien language more quickly.

Another important fact which goes strongly in favor of it is the developement of innate propensity towards speaking it, providing comparatively more competitive sorrounding for students. A student soon gets rid of the hesitation and acquires a maintained tendency of being accurate and appropriate in verbal contacts. Moreover, the time spent to accumilate all the efforts is less in contrast.

In a word, definitely learning a language in the country of it's origination is more beneficial than being familiarized with it otherwise."

6. Is "conclusion" too short?
7. Finally ..... how much band can I score out of 9 optimistically?
