I'm a teacher of migrants to Australia and so am pretty familiar with the OET. I've also attended a workshop on it. I've trained doctors and nurses from overseas in preparation for their English test in order to practice in the health industry here.

The OET is becoming more and more trusted in Australia. there are 2 other options - IELTS and ISLPR. The IELTS score for nursing even is very high - 7.5. I had a German paedeatric nurse who had already been nursing in a reputable London hospital for 2 years who was struggling to get the IELTS score. I suggested she take the ISLPR as it is the most communicative and natural face to face test or English proficiency and of course the assessor makes sure that the texts used in the test are industry specific.

But, in short, the OET is most in use for doctors, and becoming more and more accepted. You can reply with more questions if you like

Hey everyone,

My IELTS exam will be in April. I was born and raised in Germany butI lived in the States for about 4 years. Well anyways, currently I am studying for the exam. I wrote an essay and want to hear some opinions about it. Fact is, there have been some heated discussions about the topic. Some of my friends said I missed the topic, others said I didnt.

Here is the subject:

Some businesses now say that no one can smoke cigarettes in any of their offices. Some governments have banned smoking in all public places. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons.

Some people said I was supposed to agree or disagree to whether smoking has been banned in offices and public places. I thought I had to agree or disagree to a smoking ban in general. Let me know what you guys think.

Oh and here is the essay, maybe someone has any suggestions on how to write or summarize it better. I did try to put in my personal experience as a nurse.

With the appearance of the first law restricting smoking in public places in 1973, the smoking ban is one of the most heated debate throughout the world.

Restricting the places where people can smoke is a constant reminder to the public that smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death worldwide, and that its effects spread far beyond the smoker. According to the World Health Organization passive smoking increases health risks such as cardiovascular disease and premature death in non-smokers. Children are especially vulnerable to tobacco smoke.

Being a non-smoker I agree to smoking bans in certain settings, such as workplaces and enclosed public spaces, mainly on the grounds of hygiene and safety.

I believe smoking restrictions in workplaces, for example, protects workers from harmful effects of second hand smoke and subsequently reduces the absenteeism from smoking and passive smoking diseases. In addition, bans of smoking improves work productivity and reduces the risk of fires in areas where flammable materials are stored or handled. It is scientifically proven that non-smoking in bars and restaurants improves the air quality and cleanliness of such establishments.

Research and my experience as a nurse have shown that smoking bans reduce smoking overall. For many people it is a hassle to walk or drive to the nearest designated smoking area, they consume less tobacco and eventually quit smoking.

The physical and medical consequences of active and passive smoking are immense. It is important for everyone to understand why it is necessary to prevent smoking in public places. There is no doubt that smoking bans will always be criticised. I think, in order for this law to be successfully implemented into our society, it has to be strongly enforced by local authorities worldwide.

im a registered nurse from india, in NZ now for my registration, i have appeared 5times the IELTS exam but have failed to get the 7 indivisual band score in all the modules, 4 time i got 7, 7.5, 8 in 3 modules n got 6.5 in reading, i have spent loads of money on these tests n for the last time now am appearing for the OET test on the 2nd of feb, i cant offord to spend more money on study material, as i am here all alone with my kid. if anyone could pls help me by telling me or giving me the test study material it would be very helpful and generous.pls do so at the earliest pls.

Regarding your advice, I beg to differ. Words to language are no different from sounds to music, ingredients to cooking, or elements to chemistry. One of the important aspects of language learning is vocabulary enrichment. I agree with you that we must use all things that we've learned to their perfection. However, the more words we know the more precisely / artfully we can express our ideas. If happy is the only word that we know, how could we be cheerful / glad / delighted / pleased / thrilled / satisfied?

I cannot imagine we can cook a variety of good dishes with only salt â Would you like to take the title salty master?

Personal changed feelings/opinions/attitude towards English language learning

    I am convinced that English language learning are stressful and frustrating before. I feel nervous when everyone is focus on me and when teacher is listening carefully. I believe this feeling comes from my self- doubt. I think classmates are step ahead of me. I also cannot correctly pronounce some sounds and sets of sound. To be frank, I have thought that English is no more important because I am in Chinese Language and Literature Programme. I no need to improve my English anymore.

However, my friends told me that mastery of the English language is indispensible. Hong Kong being a service - oriented economy, the advantage of having a competent English-speaking work force has become all the more improtant. I know that being a Chinese Language and Literature student is only an excuse to avoid learning English (You shouldn't think like that! Nothing wrong with being a Chinese major.). This thought only badly affect my interest and progress of learning English. I do know that if I lost the interest of learning English, my English cannot improve anymore. I need to find some ways to prevent feeling so fear and embarrassed.

     There are ways for me to prevent feeling so embarrassment. I think the most basical way is to improve English. I should study English continuously. When I find some words that I cannot ~~ensure to correctly~~ pronouce, I will check the electronic dictionary immediately. I will also try to speak English with my friends. I believe I can speak English fluently if I often do that. My friends can also kindly point out my grammatical mistakes. They will not laugh at my absurd mistakes. Therefore, I will not feel embarrassed anymore.
