Regarding your advice, I beg to differ. Words to language are no different from sounds to music, ingredients to cooking, or elements to chemistry. One of the important aspects of language learning is vocabulary enrichment. I agree with you that we must use all things that we've learned to their perfection. However, the more words we know the more precisely / artfully we can express our ideas. If happy is the only word that we know, how could we be cheerful / glad / delighted / pleased / thrilled / satisfied?

I cannot imagine we can cook a variety of good dishes with only salt â Would you like to take the title salty master?

Tests like the TOEFL and the IELTS rate your mastery of English for the academic and work related settings.

Knowing all the words in the dictionary is useless if you can't create complete, coherent sentences. One good way to practice and improve your language skills is to try saying something in several different ways. This kind of exercise forces you to keep adding new words to your vocabulary and to explore different sentence structures.

Regarding the word lists you were asking about, you can search for those things using google or any other search engine.

Personal changed feelings/opinions/attitude towards English language learning

    I am convinced that English language learning are stressful and frustrating before. I feel nervous when everyone is focus on me and when teacher is listening carefully. I believe this feeling comes from my self- doubt. I think classmates are step ahead of me. I also cannot correctly pronounce some sounds and sets of sound. To be frank, I have thought that English is no more important because I am in Chinese Language and Literature Programme. I no need to improve my English anymore.

However, my friends told me that mastery of the English language is important. Hong Kong being a service - oriented economy, the advantage of having a competent English-speaking work force has become all the more improtant. I know that being a Chinese Language and Literature student is only an excuse to avoid learning English (You shouldn't think like that! Nothing wrong with being a Chinese major.). This thought only badly affects my interest and progress of learning English. I do know that if I lose the interest of learning English, my English cannot improve anymore. I need to find some ways to prevent feeling so embarrassed.

     There are ways for me to prevent feeling so embarrassed. I think the most practical way is to improve English. I should study English continuously. When I find some words that I cannot pronouce, I will check the electronic dictionary immediately. I will also try to speak English with my friends. I believe I can speak English fluently if I often do that. My friends can also kindly point out my grammatical mistakes. They will not laugh at my absurd mistakes. Therefore, I will not feel embarrassed anymore.

Greetings,

I am not a native English speaker. I am taking IELTS test in 3 days time. There is a writing task in IELTS in which charts and graphs have to be explained. I can explain these pretty easily but i seem to have problems in usage of prepositions. Below is an explanation of a graph. Kindly notify of any incorrect sentence structure or incorrect usage of prepositions. Thank you.

The bar graph shows the money spent by various wage groups on fast foods per week. Hamburgers are the most favored meals by the high income individuals spending more than 40 pounds per week. Average income group also spend much on hamburgers with amounts up to 33 pounds while low income workers sped lowest on hamburgers with only 14 pounds per week. Surprisingly, in case of fish and chips, high income individuals spend exactly the same amount as compared to low income individuals. They both spend 17 once per week. However average income group spend about 25 pounds per week on fish and chips. High income groups spend about 19.5 pounds per week on pizzas whereas average income group spends about 13 pounds per week. Low income individuals spend the least on pizzas.

The IELTS (International English Language Test System), is like TOEFL; but it is common in UK, Europe, Canada and Australia, while the TOEFL is common in USA.

Writing one essay is one of the tasks to be completed. The essay should be at least 250 words, excluding repetitions of any sentences from the subject, and to be completed in 40 minutes.

It is marked in relation to 3 factors:
1. Task fulfilment (how far the subject is covered and analysed in the essay, and the subject's questions -if any- are they answered fully?).
2. Cohesion (how logically the essay goes, in terms of ideas' flow), and coherence (how understandable is the essay, are the statements clear and self-explanatory?)
3. Vocabulary and sentence structure (is there a variation in the vocabulary, are the words used correctly in the correct position?, is the grammar correct?, are there any spelling mistakes?)
Each factor is marked out of 9 points, and the overall score is the average of the 3 marks.

Julie, thanks again and I will appreciate any advice regarding the essay. I know it is shorter than 250 words, but the subject was little difficult to me; as it is totally out of my field.
