Dear all

I've just put a whole heap of info on the OET on my previous post, but I also wanted to add this important information for nurses:-

Here in Queensland, Australia, there are 3 choices for NESB-

1. OET

2. IELTS - you need a score of 7.5, which seems unattainable for some - I had a German student who had already nursed in a paedeatric ward in London for 2 years and whose spoken English was fluent, and whose health and nursing vocabulary was that of British nurses obviously, but who took a long time to prepare for her IELTS test.

3. ISLPR - International second Language Proficiency Rating - this test is becoming more popular as it tests only on authentic texts and gives the candidates an opportunity to give most responses verbally - so a lot more natural and real, but of course more open to interpretation. It's used for teachers and police extensively now in Queensland, and for nurses in New South Wales - Sydney capital. http://www.islpr.org/

I simply need the statistical information from a reliable source (if possible sole source) for my report.

Regarding your advice, I beg to differ. Words to language are no different from sounds to music, ingredients to cooking, or elements to chemistry. One of the important aspects of language learning is vocabulary enrichment. I agree with you that we must use all things that we've learned to their perfection. However, the more words we know the more precisely / artfully we can express our ideas. If happy is the only word that we know, how could we be cheerful / glad / delighted / pleased / thrilled / satisfied?

I cannot imagine we can cook a variety of good dishes with only salt â Would you like to take the title salty master?

It's generally not the number of words you know but how well you use them (to express your thoughts clearly) that indicate your mastery level.

Tests like the TOEFL and the IELTS rate your mastery of English for the academic and work related settings.

Knowing all the words in the dictionary is useless if you can't create complete, coherent sentences. One good way to practice and improve your language skills is to try saying something in several different ways. This kind of exercise forces you to keep adding new words to your vocabulary and to explore different sentence structures.

Regarding the word lists you were asking about, you can search for those things using google or any other search engine.

    I am convinced that English language learning are stressful and frustrating before. I feel nervous when everyone is focus on me and when teacher is listening carefully. I believe this feeling comes from my self- doubt. I think classmates are step ahead of me. I also cannot correctly pronounce some sounds and sets of sound. To be frank, I have thought that English is no more important because I am in Chinese Language and Literature Programme. I no need to improve my English anymore.

However, my friends told me that mastery of the English language is important. Hong Kong being a service - oriented economy, the advantage of having a competent English-speaking work force has become all the more improtant. I know that being a Chinese Language and Literature student is only an excuse to avoid learning English (You shouldn't think like that! Nothing wrong with being a Chinese major.). This thought only badly affects my interest and progress of learning English. I do know that if I lose the interest of learning English, my English cannot improve anymore. I need to find some ways to prevent feeling so embarrassed.

SUMMARY

A highly motivated, determined, and dedicated 29 year old general practitioner (GP) with practical work experience in conducting evidence based medicine during my 16th month compulsory national service, when I was working as a GP in a health clinic handling most aspects of a GP responsibilities. My appreciation for importance of â evidence based medicineâ has led me to propose surveys and researches to gather appropriate data concerning most daily encountered medical problems. My commitment to humanitarian activities and my professional obligations led to a two-week voluntary work for Red Crescent during the very first days of catastrophic *** earthquake ( date), when I experienced working with the least equipment and facilities during a natural disaster of massive number of casualties and lots of emergencies. I spent two month of my internship and one month of my clerkship in a rural health clinic where I became familiar with the the country health system and policies in rural area while under supervision I was responsible for daily patient care and visits, handling and updating patients records, doing patients follow-ups, vaccination, pregnancy and pediatric routine cares, birth control, consultation, monitoring community health and addressing any health problem in the community. I proposed a survey during this invaluable experience of my internship to find out the results of failure of patient for following up their routing visits especially for pregnant women and juvenileâs which resulted in 23 percent increase in their attendance. The rest of my internship was in a large medical center in *** city during which we were trained for conducting a wide array of medical skills in all medical disciplines. I understand the value of research in medicine and have always been keen to conduct practical researches to solve some problems of community or bring new treatment to practice, which could be noticed from my research background. I have always been eager to connect my current knowledge to perpetual stream of new medical breakthroughs and practices through reading reputable medical journals, however my research background makes me to be critical to new article and research papers form content and methodology perspective. Playing Basketball has taught me the value of teamwork and to be more proficient in indispensable art of time management. I`m very interested in imroving my English. I`m attending now an IELTS class

and will have to pass the exam by the end of May. I will appreciate any kind of help to make any progress in my English, any advice, suggestion that could help me to be ready for the test (speaking, reading, listnening and writing).

I will have to take an IELTS moke exam by the end of the next week (Thursday and Triday), so hopefuly will be ready to pass it. I would like to tchat with english speaker to improve and enrich the vocabulary, I have a big difficulties in finding words to express an Idea or an opinion. What should I do?

Check to see the type of Toefl they are doing. The new iBT Toefl is on a par (in quality) with the IELTS whereas the older (computer based) version was never good putting emphasis on grammar knowledge and vocabulary instead of use.

Personally I still prefer the IELTS over any of the Toefl versions.
