Phrasal verbs drive me crazy. (Ah.. general English grammar, articles, idioms..they are all difficult!) I think idioms sometimes ignore general grammatical rules! Very confusing to me.

Hi guest, These are prepositions , not propositions, and there is no rule for many meanings that are not simply physical ('sit down', etc.). Your best bet is to check a good grammar book or phrasal verb/idiom book, which should have a list of most of the commoner combinations.
