Some of the ruins are even older. On the other hand, many buildings were built after the Middle Ages. The Old Town is a labyrinth of narrow alleys and ancient ruins surrounded by a wall. There are countless shops, restaurants and bars for tourists. Some restaurants are located on the third or fourth floor and provide a nice view of the harbour. The Old Town is just five minutes' walk from the city centre of Rhodes Town.

A shady shopping alley.

The Clock Tower is the highest point in Rhodes Town.

These are the ruins of a church built in the 15th century.

The Chinese are even more efficient than the Nazis.
    Letter of Motivation

I wish to apply for admission to pursue a Master’s Degree in Diplomacy at Yale University in September 2008.

Prior to my university study, diplomacy has always influenced my choice of study stemming from the fact that diplomacy is an important factor in the development of any society. Why? Society needs decisive leaders on the international scene, to protect its interests.

My university academic background is based on two major disciplines, Public Administration and history, which are some of the core subjects in diplomacy. There the curriculum for Political Science and History was based on Administrative Responsibility and Accountability and International Relations.

I studied in two areas related to diplomacy because I believed that I would be preparing myself to pursue a career in diplomacy or working in an international organization and to become a leader whose decision would have a positive effect on society. During my studies at the university, I was involved in various presentations, brainstorming, and discussion groups in which I had the opportunity to start training my leadership skills. By the time I successfully completed my studies, I had acquired excellent leadership, administrative, and organizational skills. I was inspired to think critically, reflect and put forward my ideas, and go beyond surfaces. I have learned to apply critical thought to real life situations. I believe the sum of all this makes me suitable to pursue a Masters in diplomacy.

After three years of study, I was employed to head the developement program of an international non governmental organization. Why a fresh graduate to head the program? This was a result of the development programs I submitted to the organization prior to my interview. I clearly exhibited my leadership skills through the various programs I initiated such as the youth leadership program aimed at youths. We thought them to carry out responsibilities bestowed on them. As well our aim was to reduce juvenile delinquency, and to improve the life of the under privileged by introducing several ways of generating income.

In 2001, I decided to go abroad to expand my work experience in an international arena, experience a foreign culture, and broaden my scope on life. England is my prime destination due to its growing economy and its role in international politics. I was employed to head the international department of a foreign company, specializing in labor import, exportation and developmental project analysis and implementation. Here, I have the chance to work on an international level and improve my intercultural skills. Within an international team, I work on competitive development programs for foreign companies looking for suitable developmental projects. I write reports about their strategy and implementation.

While working in England, I always ponder why Africa and other parts of the world are plagued with civil and tribal wars, political crises, and slow economic growth. Most of the peace talks always turn out to be futile thus paving the way for more fighting and political problems in our society. After a careful analysis of the whole situation, I realize that Africa and other parts of the world needs leaders with strong technical and analytical skills to solve these problems. As a result, I am motivated to pursue a master degree in in diplomacy. This is going to lead me to my career ambition of being a diplomat.

After a careful research and analysis of more than thirty universities in terms of their programs and course structures, I chose Yale Universitybecause of its well defined Masters of diplmacy program, I believe I will go a long way to enhance my leadership skills. Its mobility program with other outstanding universities will give me the opportunity to interact with fellow students from different cultural backgrounds, views and opinions. Its creative and analytical seminars are also an impetus in my decision to study at the institute. Taking part in such seminars, I will be building a strong foundation for my future career.

I am excited about my decision to pursue a master degree in diplomacy at Yale University. In conclusion I ask for the opportunity to pursue my goal.

Re: wish clauses

Yoong Liat wrote:

Hi Goodman

You wrote: I have been labeled and called by many descriptions, hinted being “Ignorant” is the first ...

I'm not hinting that you're ignorant. I say that if a learner tells me "informal" means "wrong", I'll understand that he says so because he is ignorant. But you are not a learner. You're one of the members who have a good command of English. So that's why I say it's not correct for you to say that a usage, which is classified as "informal", is wrong.

I've reproduced below what Michael Swan has to say about "I wish I was ... " and "I wish it wasn't ..." and let the members decide whether you're right to say "I wish it was not raining" or "I wish it wasn't raining" is a wrong usage.

We can use 'wish' to express regrets - to say that we would like things to be different. We use a past tense with a present meaning in this case.
I wish I was better-looking.
I wish it wasn't raining.

In a formal style, we can use 'were' instead of 'was' after 'I wish'.
I wish I were better-looking.

(Basic English Usage by Michael Swan)

Best wishes.

Liat,

With our differences in point of view, I appreciate your reply. For all intents and an purposes, I am still a learner on a different level but I perhaps have the advantage being in a completely English environment and therefore, I may appear to have better command. That said, I do feel there is a certain slight inconsistency among all the different English websites, particularly on the subjunctive. There should not be any argument that “If I were” or “I wish I were” is a subjunctive mood. The difference of the agruement really lies in the defining of the rules and the mood expressed in the senstence. The early website quoted “I wish I was” as informal.

In reality, after reading this article, that is indeed incorrect. The bottom line, " I wish I was" is against the subjunctive ruels. Take a look at the explanation on this website then you may come to agree with what I said in my earlier threads.

Confusingly enough, in the "self test", some of of the answers are considered "acceptable" or "informal" by some. I should hope that this piece will settle all questions about indicative and subjunctive moods.

Writing Tip: July 30, 2001

The Subjunctive Mood

Examine the verbs in each of the following sentences:

1. If Harrison were chosen to be the next chief executive officer of the corporation, several controversial hiring practices would change.

2. If I were you, I would increase my weekly contribution to the company-sponsored retirement fund.

3. I wish that his report were longer.

4. We recommend that the trip be postponed because of violence in the region.

5. The finance department requests that he submit updated budget projections each month.

All the above sentences are correct.

Two terms apply to the mood of English verbs: indicative and subjunctive. An indicative verb makes a statement that is factual, whereas a verb in the subjunctive mood is used to indicate a situation or condition that is hypothetical, doubtful, or conditional.

In the indicative mood, we would never write "Harrison were," "I were," "report were," "trip be," or "he submit," but these verbs are correct in the examples above because each of the sentences is written in the subjunctive mood; that is, in every case, the sentence is describing a situation that is hypothetical or conditional:

1. Harrison is not now the C.E.O., but hypothetically he could be chosen for that position. The conditional nature of the position is suggested by the word if.

2. Again, as the word if makes clear, I am not, in fact, you. So once again the situation is hypothetical and conditional: I would save more only under the condition that I became you.

3. His report is not, in fact, longer, so the sentence speaks of a hypothetical situation.

4. The trip is not currently postponed, so the subjunctive mood is appropriate to suggest a possibility, not an actuality.

5. He is not currently submitting reports monthly, so we use the subjunctive mood to discuss the possibility--not the actuality--of his doing so.

For all verbs except to be, the present subjunctive mood is most often made by omitting the characteristic s ending on verbs with third-person singular subjects. Thus, whereas in the indicative mood we would write "man leaves," in the subjunctive mood we would omit the s on the verb leave: "The judge insisted that the man not leave town." For the verb to be, we simply use be for all present tense subjunctive mood verbs and were for all past tense forms, regardless of whether the subject is singular or plural.

The Columbia Guide to Standard American English (New York: MJF Books, 1993) points out that while many subjunctive-mood phrases are commonly used in ordinary speech--"if I were you," "if need be," "far be it from me," and so on--strict use of the subjunctive mood is rare, even in the most formal speaking and writing situations (243). Very few people would write, for example, "If he arrive on time, we will have dinner before the show." However, if a form of the verb to be were used in that sentence, all polished writers would agree that the subjunctive is necessary: "If he were [not was] to arrive on time, we could have dinner before the show."

The Harbrace College Handbook (13th edition) lists other common, fixed expressions that are stated in the subjunctive mood: "so be it," "be that as it may," "as it were," and "God bless you" (99-100).

TEST YOURSELF
Which of the following sentences need verbs in the subjunctive mood?

1. If I was Sam, I would hire an assistant now before the hiring freeze takes effect.

2. The committee suggested that Dr. Jones is chosen as the next chief of staff.

3. As August approaches, every school child wishes that his or her vacation was longer.

4. It is critical that every potential donor gives blood during this shortage.

Sonnets were introduced by Thomas Wyatt in the early 16th century. His sonnets and those of his contemporary the Earl of Surrey were chiefly translations from the Italian of Petrarch and the French of Ronsard and others. While Wyatt introduced the sonnet into English, it was Surrey who gave them the rhyme scheme, meter, and division into quatrains that now characterizes the English sonnet. Sir Philip Sidney's sequence Astrophil and Stella (1591) started a tremendous vogue for sonnet sequences: the next two decades saw sonnet sequences by William Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser, Michael Drayton, Samuel Daniel, Fulke Greville, William Drummond of Hawthornden, and many others. These sonnets were all essentially inspired by the Petrarchan tradition, and generally treat of the poet's love for some woman; the exception is Shakespeare's sequence. In the 17th century, the sonnet was adapted to other purposes, with John Donne and George Herbert writing religious sonnets, and John Milton using the sonnet as a general meditative poem. Both the Shakespearean and Petrarchan rhyme schemes were popular throughout this period, as well as many variants.

The fashion for the sonnet went out with the Restoration, and hardly any sonnets were written between 1670 and Wordsworth's time. However, sonnets came back strongly with the French Revolution. Wordsworth himself wrote several sonnets, of which the best-known are "The world is too much with us" and the sonnet to Milton; his sonnets were essentially modelled on Milton's. Keats and Shelley also wrote major sonnets; Keats's sonnets used formal and rhetorical patterns inspired partly by Shakespeare, and Shelley innovated radically, creating his own rhyme scheme for the sonnet "Ozymandias". Sonnets were written throughout the 19th century, but, apart from Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese and the sonnets of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, there were few very successful traditional sonnets. Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote several major sonnets, often in sprung rhythm, of which the greatest is "The Windhover," and also several sonnet variants such as the 10-1/2 line curtal sonnet "Pied Beauty" and the 24-line caudate sonnet "That Nature is a Heraclitean Fire." By the end of the 19th century, the sonnet had been adapted into a general-purpose form of great flexibility.

This flexibility was extended even further in the 20th century. Among the major poets of the early Modernist period, Robert Frost, Edna St. Vincent Millay and E. E. Cummings all used the sonnet regularly. William Butler Yeats wrote the major sonnet Leda and the Swan, which used half rhymes. Wilfred Owen's sonnet Anthem for Doomed Youth was another sonnet of the early 20th century. W.H. Auden wrote two sonnet sequences and several other sonnets throughout his career, and widened the range of rhyme-schemes used considerably. Auden also wrote one of the first unrhymed sonnets in English, "The Secret Agent" (1928). Half-rhymed, unrhymed, and even unmetrical sonnets have been very popular since 1950; perhaps the best works in the genre are Seamus Heaney's Glanmore Sonnets and Clearances, both of which use half rhymes, and Geoffrey Hill's mid-period sequence 'An Apology for the Revival of Christian Architecture in England'. The 1990s saw something of a formalist revival, however, and several traditional sonnets have been written in the past decade.

[edit] Form

Soon after the introduction of the Italian sonnet, English poets began to develop a fully native form. These poets included Sir Philip Sidney, Michael Drayton, Samuel Daniel, the Earl of Surrey's nephew Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford and William Shakespeare. The form is often named after Shakespeare, not because he was the first to write in this form but because he became its most famous practitioner. The form consists of three quatrains and a couplet. The couplet generally introduced an unexpected sharp thematic or imagistic "turn" called a volta. The usual rhyme scheme was a-b-a-b, c-d-c-d, e-f-e-f, g-g. In addition, sonnets are written in iambic pentameter, meaning that there are 10 syllables per line, and that every other syllable is naturally accented.

This example, Shakespeare's Sonnet 116, illustrates the form:

Let me not to the marriage of true minds (a)
Admit impediments. Love is not love (b)
Which alters when it alteration finds, (a)
Or bends with the remover to remove. (b)

O no, it is an ever fixed mark (c)
That looks on tempests and is never shaken; (d)
It is the star to every wand'ring barque, (c)
Whose worth's unknown although his height be taken. (d)

Love's not time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks (e)
Within his bending sickle's compass come; (f)
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, (e)
But bears it out even to the edge of doom. (f)

If this be error and upon me proved, (g)
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Re: Should teenages date??!!?

It's very easy to point out what others missed or didn't see after the fact. My point and questions are many natives put information on the internet with the same concept and usage. Is this a common misunderstanding? Perhaps this is the reason I made the same error because all my learning in the past had exposed to the same error all along. I was actually thinking "welcomed" was wrong. Pretty embarrasing.....!

However, if we look at it a little deeper, not too many would consdier it wrong to say "the visitors were warmly welcome" based on what I saw in the Google search which clearly demonstrated that this error actually exsists among the natives. Clearly the tone is passive but "welcome" is used in the adjective form. Since "welcome" can be adjective and verb, how do we separate whether it's used in adjective form or part participle form when a is sentence writiten as "they were welcome"- here welcome could be intended as "welcomed". This is the same discussion we had on "open" vs "opened". I am about wearing out my "welcome mat" if I keep this going any longer. Now I will leave you with this Canadian comments:

"Please feel welcome" is the normal way to say it. It would be used as: "feel free to give us your comments", for example.

I suppose "Please feel welcomed" is correct but it sounds very strange. Seems like "Please, feel as if you are being welcomed."

"All comments welcomed" = We welcome all comments. (welcome as verb)
"All comments welcome" = All comments are welcome. (welcome as adjective)
Both are perfectly fine and basically equal in my mind.

I'm super tired but hopefully this gave you some sort of idea. If not... well, there's always someone else.

Re: Upfront

Looks like bad English to me. It's open to interpretation.

If that were the case, the language would have almost no good words at all, Anon.

Not slang, but informal, Rex. It dates, the dictionaries say, from about 1965 or so:

Up-front. Informal.
–adjective Also, upfront.

1.

invested or paid in advance or as beginning capital: an up-front fee of five percent and an additional five percent when the job is done.

2.

honest; candid; straightforward: He's very up-front about discussing his past.

3.

conspicuous or prominent: The company has an up-front position in its industry.

4.

located in the front or forward section: to request up-front seats on a plane.

–adverb Also, up front.

5.

as an initial investment, beginning capital, or an advance payment: They'll need a half-million dollars up-front before opening the business.

6.

before other payments, deductions, or returning a profit: Estimated operating expenses will be deducted up-front.
