A sequel to an article before a gerund question

Hi,

Can you please tell me why a person use an indefinite article before a gerund/verbal noun?

I think here people are making an instance of all the gerund/verbal noun "a playing" and not making types of it. Like I have said in the thread named "indefinite article before a gerund," I think native speakers have choices when confronted with the dilemma like this (if we could call it a dilemma); they can make an instance of the gerund/verbal noun or types of it. I think making instances (that is 'separate occurances") is what has been done for these sentences I copied (pasted??) from a Google Book search.

Should we not love in spirit and in truth?

Just my thoughts as I jot down a few lines today.

I've seen certain views

Behind the Color Blind

I like my hair, my skin tone,

OK, thanks, T_nattawat. I have underlined some problem areas again, fixed others (in bold), and crossed out unnecessary words and phrases (you may have to edit further to correct any grammar problems caused by omitting these):

Topic: A company has announced that it wishes to build a large factory near your community. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this new influence on your community. Do you support or oppose the factory? Explain your position.

    Imagine that you live in the countryside where people work mostly on farm; one day some company comes and announces that a large factory is going to be built ~~near your hometown~~. How would you respond, support or oppose? ~~I am one of those who strongly disagree with the plan of having~~ a large factory in my beloved community is not good, because the advantages are outweighed by the disadvantages: it will cause pollution, ~~it will~~ ruin people's culture, and there are (not parallel with the previous 2 times in the list) many other things that the community need.
    There are quite a few advantages the factory would bring to the community. ~~To begin with, a lot of~~ jobs ~~opportunities~~ will be available; people would not have work far ~~away~~ from home. It would also bring more people to town. As a consequence, more income would come to the town. In addition, ~~what will come~~ with new arrivals would come new ideas and culture that the community will be flourished. Soon, the area would be filled with housing areas, ~~followed by~~ restaurants, stores, and shopping centers. The old town will be transformed into a modern city.
    On the other hand, the factory could be a bad influence on the community in the long run. First of all, a lot of pollutions would be created. The community will be turned into an industrial area ~~soon~~. ~~Day after day,~~ the town that once was fulled of trees and fresh air will be covered with poisonous gases and obnoxious noise, not to mention water pollution that will spoil ~~water~~ resources used in farming. Moreover, as the industrial areas expand, native landowners would be forced to abandon their farmlands to sell them to investors and builders. Not only the natural environment will be destroyed but also people's traditions and life styles ~~that have been passed from generation to generation~~. There is no guarantee that the new ways of life that will be bought by the newcomers will suit the community; the ~~only thing that is~~ guarantee is that our beloved community will never be the same.
    In conclusion, it cannot be denied that the community will be thriving because of a factory; but in exchange, it will ~~have to~~ suffer from pollution caused by the factory. ~~And~~ people's life style would be changed. Also, many other facilities need to be built instead: libraries, parks, and recreation centers. If something is constructed, it should not be a factory. ~~It will not do any good to my community. Since high school, books and TV programs about practicing law have interested me profoundly. Studying law at university brought me to a new world of jurisprudence. Having taken basic legal courses like Civil Law, Criminal Law, International Private Law, and Contract Law ~~and so on~~, my quest for knowledge has only intensified. Thus, I spent most nights at library reading books like The Social Contract by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, On Crimes and Punishments by Cesare Beccaria, A Theory of Justice by John Rawls, etc. ~~Certainly, due to my diligence and intelligence,~~ I topped my class in many courses and ended up with a GPA of 3.5/4.0.

Since basic legal knowledge is never enough for a prospective lawyer, I participated in extracurricular activities to put what I learnt into practice. I have been a member of our collegeâs legal advisory team for three years, which benefits me a lot in resolving real legal issues. During my internship at HuaLi Law Firm, I was assigned several important tasks like drafting legal documents, registered cases because of my excellent writing skill and strong sense of responsibility.

Besides, I am an active participant of various campus activities such as the debate for freshman, the Lilv Cup moot court, the cuisine competition, etc. Although I failed in some contests, I still believe that the process of experiencing and learning is always more important than the results. By taking these activities, my confidence was improved and my communication skill was advanced.

As the editor-in-chief of a biweekly campus magazine, I introduced a new column which became popular among students. Moreover, our team under my direction accomplished the publicity work of the University Cuisine Festival. Also, as the project manager of SIFE, a global student organization, I planned and managed a four-day embroidery exhibition at Shanghai New International Exhibition Centre.

Outside pure academics and leadership roles, I am keen on volunteer work. In my freshman year, I tutored a teenage girl in math for free. When she made significant progress in her examination, the smile she worn touched me deeply. I had my final exam from the writing course as a home take-in, but the type of the essay sounded a little bit weird to me. Here is what my lecturer gave as information:

Write an evaluation essay on the following topic

The Self-Evaluation essay is a reflective essay assessing and describing your learning experiences. Write a self evaluation essay considering the guidelines below.
The following are guidelines for your Self-Evaluation Essay:

Include each of your learning objectives,
Describe how the learning objectives were accomplished and the steps used to complete objectives,
For objectives you did not meet, state why not. What did you learn from the failure to meet objectives? (Is this even proper English? )
What else did you learn that was not in your initial objective? Specific examples should be cited. The student should review the learning objectives set at the beginning of the term and assess what growth he or she has achieved during the term."

This Is Only the Beginning

This is my first year in the Linguistics department of Hacettepe University. I can easily say that this university is not quite what I expected it to be. I was hoping to improve myself in many fields, but this did not happen in the first year, since I had to deal with my courses more than anything else. However, my English dramatically improved thanks to the courses. I would like to evaluate this year in terms of how I improved my English skills (speaking, writing, reading and listening), while doing nothing about the other fields I was interested in (arts and sports).

First of all, I have been able to improve my expressive English skills thanks to a native speakerâs being our lecturer, and having courses on how to express ourselves better in English. Margaret was the lecturer of our writing course. I learned many new words, idioms, grammar structures and expressions in her classes, which would have me state my thoughts in a more comprehensible way in written language. Also, both in our writing and reading classes we had discussions about various controversial subjects that helped me improve my speaking skills. We were having phonetics at the same time, and as a student trying to attend all the classes, I improved my pronunciation. So, I can say that I am grateful for my department to help me meet my objectives in expressing myself both in spoken and written language.

Secondly, my receptive skills have also improved with the help of the courses like reading, literature, and listening comprehension. Even though I did not have much difficulty in reading and understanding course books, articles, reading passages and the like, I was rather poor at literal texts, or in other words, the figurative use of English language. By the help of our literature classes, I got over this problem, and now I can mostly understand what Shakespeare or Hemingway says. My listening skills, likewise, improved remarkably after having taken the listening comprehension courses. I was unable to differentiate between the words that resemble each other like âmateâ and âmadeâ before I took those courses. I can say that listening to someone speaking English has become one of the easiest tasks ever with the help of my lecturers.

Thirdly, even though there has been a big improvement in my English skills, I have not been able to deal with arts or sports, both of which are my main interests. I was hoping to have art lessons such as painting and music. However, all the courses are academic ones. Another deficit of my department âor of the university in general- is that there are not many sports activities going on. Because of these reasons, I felt rather âantisocialâ in my first year in the university. As a result, not having done anything in these two areas is the only objective that I missed this year, but I am thinking of taking piano and karate courses next year from another university. If only my university gave more importance to these two areas!

Consequently, although I was not very content with the overall situation of the university this year, I must admit that my English skills have improved drastically within this year. I, however, still feel sad about not being able to take any courses from my areas of interest. Who knows, maybe this was only the beginning. Maybe, I am going to like this university better. Only time will show!
