My two cents: Normally, it should be /ae/ sound. (in a sentence preceding a word which starts with a consonant) But it can be pronounced as /eı/ not /ej/ or / /. I was taught not to pronounce it as / / in formal speech , /eı/ is the strong version and / / is mostly used in daily speech.

Why is the word Directory as 'der-rec-tory' , according to the audio on this website http://www.bartleby.com/61/. However, it has d-rkt-r, d- as the pronunication key. Exactly what is going on here? I thought the word would be pronounced as 'die-rec-toree'. Please help!
