Google will give me all sorts of things, including wrong words.

For example, I type 'univresity' and got the following, which is only a tiny fraction of what they provided.

Analyzing WH-questions the H&P CGEL way

Hi!
I am reading Huddleston & Pullum's CGEL, and I've run into a problem. I don't understand how to analyze WH-questions with both subject-auxiliary inversion and . Couldn't somebody help me out?
Let us take the sentence What did the Captain say? as an example. Here the Captain is obviously the subject. But what is the predicate? Is it say ___, with the gap as the object, or what is it?
This is the solution I've come to, but I'm at all sure it is not altogether wrong:
[Clause[Prenucleus:NP_i [Head:N What]] [Nucleus:Clause [Prenucleus:V_j did] [Nucleus:Clause [Subject:NP [Det:D the] [Head:N Captain]] [Predicate:VP [Predicator:GAP_j ___] [CatComp:Clause [Predicate:VP [Predicator:V say] [Object:GAP_i ___]]]]]]]

Looks totally weird to me. Any ideas?

Very good. Hitch managed to fix the picture editor! It works just fine now.

Many of the hotels bear Caribbean or Latin American names. There's a tourist resort called Puerto Rico where there are such hotels as the Haiti, the Maracaibo and the Miami. More hotels are being built although it is obvious that at the moment the hotals are not at all full. There are too many of them as it is, and there are too many bars and restaurants as well. About 25 years ago the Canary Islands were more or less the only winter holiday destination for Europeans but these days people take trips outside Europe too. Islas Canarias have lost their monopoly. People go to Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, India, Egypt, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Florida, Hawaii, South Africa etc.

The Maspalomas lake

I have never asked anyone but the water in the lake cannot possibly be fresh water because there are 320 sunny days every year in Maspalomas in the south of Gran Canaria. The sea is about 100 metres from the lake and I think the water comes from it.

The sand has been carried by the winds from the Sahara over millions of years - and it keeps coming. During my stay there was what people called a sand storm. There were microscopic grains of sand in the air for two or three days and many people complained it made their throats sore and hurt their eyes. The sky was all grey despite being cloudless, grey with sand.

This park is very centrally located for tourists and shopping in Las Palmas. In the 1970s it was teeming with tourists but these days there are more locals than foreigners having a drink in its bars. Tourists have been relocated to the south, which is sunnier and warmer. There are only 140 sunny days a year in Las Palmas.

Holiday pictures from Gran Canaria

I returned from the Canary Islands a few days ago and I'd like to share some of the pictures I took there.
Amadores apartments in the south-west of the island.
Some Amadores hotels. Note that there is a swimming pool on the roof of the the Gloria Palace Hotel closest to the sea.

A promenade lining Playa de Las Canteras in Las Palmas, the capital of the islands.

Playa de Las Canteras is three kilometres long. This is the northern end of it.

Time to have a cup of coffee and some tapas.

There is something wrong with the picture editor. I meant to post more pictures but it accepts pictures in a very unpredictable way. Everything seems to work out fine but in most cases the picture doesn't appear. Sometimes I see just two or three millimetres of it in the window and when I go to Prewiew, I see all of the picture. There are some bugs. However, I'll try to post more pictures in the next few days.

There are peaky, dark mountains beyond this -- just as across the vast bay are gloomy hills. It is a strange, strange landscape: as if here the world left off.
The bay is vast in itself;

and all these curious things happening at its head: this curious,craggy-studded town, like a great stud of house-covered rock jutting up out of the bay flats:

around it on one side the weary, Arab-looking, palm-desolated malarial plain, and on the other side great salt lagoons,

dead beyond the sand-bar: these backed again by serried, clustered mountains, suddenly, while away beyond the plain, hills rise to sea again.

Land and sea both seem to give out, exhausted, at the bay head: the world's end. And into this world's end starts up Cagliari, and on either side, sudden, serpent-crest hills.

But it still reminds me of Malta: lost between Europe and Africa and belonging to nowhere.
Belonging to nowhere, never having belonged to nowhere ... Left outside of time and history.
