Hi,

So what should I use instead of 'dissing' here? I didn't say you couldn't use it. I just said that it was slang. That's OK in situations where slang is acceptable. I wouldn't say it, for example, to the Queen of England or in a job interview or in a college essay.

Since you've decided to start being disrespectful to Barbaro again, I have a
question for you. When are you going to write your column defending
Michael Vick?

Dear Mr. -----,

I graduated from Kiev National University of Construction and Architecture in 2004 and I obtained a master degree in Architecture of Buildings and Structures. As my thesis was of high quality, I was invited to take a PhD by the exam commission. I started my PhD on September 2004 with a 3 year contract, also at Kiev University.

For various reasons I left my PhD studies and moved to the Netherlands in August 2005. Thinking of continuing my studies, I learnt about DTI before coming to the Netherlands and started my correspondence through email. I understand that according to the rules in the Netherlands, I have to follow a Dutch language course for 1.5 years before I can begin my studies, and I will be completing my course by the end of March 2007. Meanwhile, I have gathered new information and brochures through the internet and TUDelft. By getting to know more about DTI, I understood that for several reasons this is the best study and opportunity for me. One strong reason is the duration of the study, as a PhD is at least 4 years, and I am already 1.5 years away (note: either the March 2007 date is incorrect or this statement. March 2007 is only 3 months away from now). from higher education. I am not sure if I would even find a PhD research which I am interested in. Another reason is that I am a newcomer to the Netherlands Architecture market and I have to learn much about the methods, styles and standards which are used in the companies here . As DTI is a combination of studying and working together, it would be easier for me to get to this market. One more important reason is my foreign diploma, which is going to be not trusted automatically here and than investigated by every company I apply to work for. But by getting DTI diploma, I will be a graduate of a high level recognised university with a registered title in the Netherlands.

Obtaining the ability to improve and renovate the architectural design processes seems to be necessary as the design and building industry are now mostly facing old practical but not scientifically methods. Todayâs fast developments in architecture and structures must meet the new concepts to manage different parts of the design process. DTI offers the knowledge to solve the management problems to improve the process design and making more effective and better quality of the projects. (This whole paragraph needs re-writing. The first sentence is rather unpenetrable; I do not really understand it. Try to simplify your sentence structures and work on the punctuation. Did you write this? It doesn't seem to match the rest of your letter's style.)

The information I got at the DTI information day was enough to persuade me and make me think that with DTI I will be sure of my future career and that I should diversify my professional education. Certainly this science (science?not sure this is right word here) presents a stronger possibility of finding a higher level position in design process worldwide. I am very motivated by complex and greater architectural projects (what I was busy with from the first day I started to work as an architect. - this section is not clear in meaning and needs re-phrasing. Are you saying that you were working on complex projects from day one? Or that you want to work on more complex projects?) DTI will teach me not only how these complexities are arranged in different phases, but how to manage them as well. I believe that management and finding solutions is more important than being busy with only one phase of a design process as an architect. On the other hand, gaining the required additional knowledge in technological management as well as in architecture, building and planning, makes DTI a unique and unusual course to further develop my education and career.

I hope I can make a good progress with the vitality and the energetic style what I find in myself about DTI now. After talking with a few students from DTI, I am even more interested in starting this course, as I understand about the very friendly and light atmosphere inside the faculty and between colleagues. I would welcome a personal interview to further discuss this opportunity. I thank you in advance for your kind attention to my letter and I hope to meet you in the near future.

Punctuation: Periodical vs. Business

I wanted to write a formal thank you letter to a newspaper; however, I am unsure of the underline/quotation/italicize rule when referring to the newspaper as a business.

For example, the sentence below refers to the newspaper as a business and not a periodical:

Dear Ms. Doe:

I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed my recent visit to *** and the opportunity to interview for the position....

Should *** be: The Sun News, The Sun News, "The Sun News" or simply The Sun News?

To all thank you for helping me on my last paper. Now I have another one. I am not satisfied of what I wrote and I was wondering if someone can point out where i need to improve. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. I know my weakest problem is also punctuation. Thank you

Success in the field is not success in the classroom

The football stadium is packed. The crowd is on their feet, bumping and cheering for their team to win. The aromas of burned hotdogs are all around while they are being cooked. The sour taste of beer leaves a lasting impression on my taste bud. But as I sit there I wonder to myself what the price for the popularity they are getting is. They might be making millions for the colleges but are American Athletes really getting the education they deserve? In this essay, I will set out to prove that athletes and education comes to a higher price for student athletes.

It is sad to see young student athletes setting up for much less education than they deserve. Being a student athlete is not easy as we all think it is. Yes it is great to make millions for your college school but ask yourself this question âIs being good what I do can help me in the future?â There is so much pressure being a student athlete that they have a hard time getting a B average in school. Being an athlete you spend many hours on the road and practicing that causes to drain their physical and mental energies, which they need for studying. But that does not concern them much; Teachers are treating athletes with preferential allowing them to take make-up test and alternative assignments. By doing this they are compromising their potential and academic careers. This takes me back when I was in high school; I was so focused on my Track and Field training that my grades were failing. My teacher passed me because one of my teachers is also my coaches. Furthermore, a special tutoring is provided for them to catch up what they missed. As a result some student athlete does not even know how to speak proper English. One good example, when I watch the interview for the after game I always notice how some athletes always begins their answers with : âUhâ or âYou Know what I Mean.â With these special attentions from teachers, student athletes are compromising their potential and academic career.

On top of their academic concern, student athlete also had to think of what they are going to do in the future as far as job is concern. Being good at what you do can help you set up better life for the future. When we all registered for college classes we have counselors guide us the right way but student athletes sometimes are not lucky on that aspect. A student athlete could take any class they want and counselors would not know because athletes never had time on top of their practices to go down and talk to them. But why should they when most student athletes have high expectations for careers in professional sports. For example, 2 weeks ago I was watching the 2006 NFL draft on ESPN. Two most talented players in college football stood out more. In 2005, Reggie Bush and Vince Young were the most well know athletes in college football because not only did they lead their teams to national championship but also they left college early to become professional football players. The University of Maryland had a research done about college athletes and non athletes; in this research it shows that athletes are more likely to expressed greater uncertainty concerning their majors and showed higher potential of changing their major more often. Because of the time demands which includes practices, games, homework and classes most student athletes does not have sufficient knowledge of the world of work.

On top of academic and career issue, students also have to deal with financial stability. When we think of college, we automatically think of money. We always wonder how we can afford education on top of being able to afford to buy food but not when it comes to student athletes. Most student athletes do not plan to work during their college years and more less concerned about their finances. Being a student athlete you will receive a full scholarship as long as they continue doing what they do best for the university that is play sports then athletes have nothing to worry for the rest of their college years. But sometimes is not as easy ride as everyone wants it to be. Maurice Clarett is one prime example. Back in 2002, he helped Ohio State win a national championship and he seemed did not care know how to move on with his life after his dream imploded. He was suspended for lying on a police campus report about the value of some stolen items in his car. Now Clarett is facing charges for robbery and if he does makes it to an NFL team in Europe how long do you think he can play before suffering an injury? Not many college athletes can make it to the professional career.

Athletes and education combines come to higher price for student athletes. Just like in the story âIn Praise of the F Wordâ by Mary Sherry she says âNo one seems to think that---no matter what environment they come from---most kids donât put school first on their list unless they perceived something is at stake,â and I agree with her most athletes donât really bother with their school unless it is necessary. If you decided to become a student athlete ask yourself these questions first; when I get hurt who would pay for my education? If I go pro then I get hurt what would I do afterwards? Education should be one of the priorities for student athletes as well as victory in the field. Education can help athletes a chance to grow intellectually that can lead them to other opportunities in the future. Student athletes should not waste their talent but also they should not forget to gain an education at the same time. The only way to achieve a goal is to work hard in order to success in life.
