Yes, but I noticed that vowel length only makes sense in stressed syllables, so as long as you stress the second word in each example this feature can be neglected. Devoicing definitely varies from dialect to dialect, but... I can't "hear" all that difference. As soon as such cases happen in normal connected speech, the difference seems to disappear. They spend a lot of time on it, but they couldn’t learn it well.
I think if you want to learn a foreign language well, the following things are very necessary. Firstly, you should be able to understand the language when your hear it spoken. Then you should speak it correctly. Of course it’s also important to be able to read the lanuage. Also you should be able to write it correctly.

It´s a rule (it may change in the future, but for the moment, it sounds very wrong to a native ear any other way). It is like a transitive verb that must always be followed by an object - We can´t say "I took." for example. You´d have to say "I took it". So the options are:

1) Spend time + gerund (I spent a week writing the essay)
2) Spend time + adverbial phrase (I spent a week in the Bahamas ; I spent a week there)

but not

3) Spend time + infitive (I spent time to learn English) It´s simply wrong.

There aren’t any easy ways to succeed in learning a foreign lanuage. It’s true that you should learn new words, expressions and grammar by heart. But that is not enough. You should learn to use them. “Learn through use” is a good piece of advice for those who are...

Re: Bus driver fights with a kid

Hi Tom,

When someone is just learning English, they need to find out which expressions are commonly used. Then they can decide whether they want to speak like everyone else, or make things up.

Re: Adverbs

Hi,
Sorry, I don't know. Perhaps someone else can tell you.

This seems to be a topic that fascinates a lot of people who are learning English.
eg What is the longest word?
But I think that most native speakers have absolutely no interest in such a question.

You just decide which verb to use without worrying about whether it is regular or irregular. Then you use it correctly.

That's why people who are learning English have to learn which verbs are irregular, and how to use them correctly.
