LETTER OF MOTIVATION

Dear Sir or Madam,

I would like to state my motivation with regards to my choice of applying for the European Legal Studies Programme at the *** with a specialization in European Law and Economic Analysis (ELEA).

First of all since an early age I have always been attracted by the study of Law, especially European Law, and Economic Analysis of Law. In fact it is not coincidence that I received my degree in law with a dissertation on the Economic Analysis of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (both my degree and my dissertation were awarded the maximum grades possible). My interest in European law already dates from when, as a schoolboy, I decided to join the European Federalist Association. In this capacity I used to organize conferences in my native town to explain the constitutional nature of the European Communities. Growing up I was going indeed to discover the legal intricacies of the acquis communautaure. On the other hand, although I already had a penchant for Economics, my enthusiasm for Economic Analysis of Law was to be awoken by a conference in which I met Professor ***, the founder of the New Haven school and one of the leading authorities of EAL, with whom I later corresponded. Later on I studied EAL with Professor *** of University of Catania, an Oxford-trained economist, who was to become my friend and promoter, and with Professor *** of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. I also think it is noteworthy that during most of the University years I was also working as a free-lance journalist dealing mostly with Foreign Policy and European Affairs.

European Law has always been very meaningful to me for two main reasons. In primis I cannot deny that I have always been attracted by it because of my ideological convictions as an European Federalist. In secundis from a scientific perspective I believe it is the most interesting field of Law since it constitutes the emerging of a new super-national legal order that is shaping a new historical era, where the old nation-States tend to fade a bit (since I am also a lover of History I usually compare this phenomenon to the Medieval ius commune, a comparison that my old Professor of History of Law would very much appreciate). Finally I think there is so much more to study in this field, especially since it is in continuous evolution and since the actual EU cannot simply stand still. In fact with the adoption of the Euro the choice seems to have been made by many MS. EU can only grow, especially in the field of the government of the economy and, subsequently, foreign policy, or can shrink back in the remotest possibility to the minimal size from which we started.

Economic Analysis of Law has been like an intellectual awakening to me. In fact it is the instrument and the methodology that I have always wanted to use in my legal analysis. With EAL one has a meter of comparison, which is neither moral nor subjective, but at the same time that always take in account different circumstances and to give them the best possible law. To me it has become not only a methodology of study, but the philosophy of my life.

After the successful completion of my degree I started my legal internship in Italy and subsequently went on to accept a job in one of the most prestigious *** Law Firm in the field of European Law. In my new capacity I soon found possible to apply what I had previously studied. Moreover the daily contact with the top European Institutions, the multi-ethnic nature of my new working environment, the participation to the “European process” and so on, made me very enthusiastic about my new job, even if very demanding. Nonetheless I have the time to write some scientific article: one of my article on European Law is at this very moment being published by a major European editor and I am actually writing another article on EAL and the Treaty of Lisbon.

I decided to apply to the *** since this would enormously widen my study and professional opportunity. In the future I would like to continue working in the field of European Law, possibly in a European Institutions and, at the same time, I would like to pursue intellectual ambitions such a research for Think-tanks and the likes and publishing books and articles on European issues. It is in fact true to say that there is no other such program of European Law from which I could benefit so much than the one from the ***. There I hope to find the intellectual challenges of a top European *** and the European spirit that I need.

In addition to my educational and professional background, I have a strong personal motivation to study at the ***. While I am originally from the ***, I have travelled extensively within Europe and abroad. I have partaken in the Erasmus project during my third year at University, which brought me to Belgium and I have travelled to France, Luxemburg, United Kingdom and Germany on several occasions on professional visits. Consequently, I have developed strong intercultural skills and acquired a knowledge of English, French and Dutch. These factors further increase my motivation to work in an environment which requires understanding of different socio-economic systems.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Also, people reading this kind of letter pretty much are students, young people, so I figured it would be better not to write so formal as usally. Or I'm I wrong?
I'd be very grateful if you'd give me any suggestions how to improve my letter writen below this text and if you could point out my gramatical mistakes, I'm sure there are a lot of them.
Thanks a lot, lots of kisses from Croatia!

Salut!

My name is ---, I'm a 22 years old student at 3rd year of
french and philosophy at ---. When finding out of this kind of volunteering I
immediately knew I want to be a part of it. With this letter I would like to
apply for the participation as a volunteer in your EVS project and through it I'd
like to bring you closer how deeply I would like to become a part of your team
and why I think you'd make a great decision choosing me.
You're probably asking yourself why I'm so sure of myself
and what is that what I can offer more than someone else? Well...

As I already mentioned, being a student of french language
and it's literature and also being an admirer of it's country's great history
and rich culture, I'm really eager to develop my language skills and to improve
my speaking french whilst gaining valuable experience and knowledge. As well,
I'd like to learn about other cultures and various people.

I started to learn french not before my first year of
college so this kind of opportunity would mean a great deal for my professional
as well for my personal improvement. I'm an highly motivated, hard-working,
tolerante and dynamic individual with expressed comunicating and organisation
skills. During my time as a student I gathered a big amount of experinece in
working with people in wide range of jobs (being a promotor, hostese,
waitresse) that I did as a member of the Student Service in my city. I also
volunteered at animal shelter for two years (Noina arka) and I have participated
in our Society of francophone students in Croatia for two years now. In year 2005. I went through a training curse
to be an animator at seaside resorts.

Like you see, I have kept myself busy.

Well, doing all that I learned I enjoy working with people
and that it fullfills me. And I'm really good at it. I easily adopt in any work
enviroment and in working as a part of a group. Although neither an individual
work that requires an initiative and responsable person with a sens of personal
organisation doesn't represent any problem to me; I act equally good in both
surroundings and I cope effectively with all kinds of demands put in front of
me.

I'm a computer literate and I speak, read and use both
english and french. But I also think that there's a lot more work in front of
me to achieve a level of a perfectly spoken french. Passively I use slovenian
and I also learned deaf-mute language for a year.

Privatly, I like sports and dancing. Depending of my free
time and my mood I ride my bike, I swimm, I run. But for the past year I put
myself mostly in ballet dancing lessons which I really enjoy. Also I adore to
read. Everything. Wether(?) it's a daily or weekly press, all sorts of
magazines, romans, Internet sites – from yellow pages to scientific articles,
arts to love themes – I swallow it all in one breath. Any gatherings or
activities of all kinds including people spending time together always will
drow my attention. I'm a big filmophile
and I enjoy music. And if you add a good cup of coffee with a fresh croissant
accompanying it, plus my family and friends, with whom I share all my interests
and free time, that's my winning choice.

I'm sure you have already got an idea of how much I'd like
to come and become a player in your team, but all the same, I'll use one more
opportunity to express how strongly I desire to volounteer in your EVS project
and how I'm convicted I have a lot to contribute with my experience and
personality as your team member. The changes and all the adjustements that I
would be confronted with do not frighten me, moreover, they challenge me. All
potential shortfalls that will occure I'm willing to compensate with my maximum
effort and doing my best. I'm very ambitious, prepaired to learn and ready to
adopt new skills. I would be very gratefull if you'd give me a chance to
represent all my qualities and ambitions in person, working for you. As I
already said, this opportunity means to me a lot and represents a big
possibility in enriching myself as a person as well as developing myself in
professional sense.

I thank you for your time spent reading this letter and I hope for a positive
response. If you have any questions, please contact me through --- or my
perssonal e-mail address ---

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

----

First, Happy new year!! (a little late)

I'm a colombian that pursue a PhD position at an important institution in germany. I have to send these four letters (and no more than 300 words). Three of them are letters that explain the election of a research field and the last one, is a letter of motivation.

Could you help me to correct orthography and other things you think it could sound better? Thank you!!

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Option 1

The research that try to understand the mechanisms of pathogenesis, the influence of a pathogen-host interaction, and how new therapy strategies can be development from this knowledge, have ever me fascinated.

I have read with special attention the aims of this research group and its research interests fit my expectations for beginning an interesting scientific career. As a microbiologist, I have always thought in the application of the science to improve the life conditions of people, through the understanding of the biology of disease and development of new therapies.

Since almost a year, I am attending a signal transduction lecture and seminar offered by the Institute X in Y city, Germany. This lecture taught me the great importance of cellular communication and transduction of signals from in- and outside of the cell. Surprisingly, it is not limited to some cellular processes, or specific cell types, but is a network of different kind of molecules, where just one of them could regulate a wide diversity of processes.

It is still more interesting, that the research of the different steps of signaling pathways could lead to a new therapeutic strategy, whose goal were to avoid the host invasion.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Option 2

Virology is one of the science fields that needs to work very closely with another sciences like immunology, molecular biology and genetics among others, as an interdisciplinary network to find answers and apply them to fight efficiently viral diseases.

It is interesting how such a small particles and with such a simple structure can cause enormous changes on the host, can use the mimicry as a strategy to escape from the recognition through the immune system, can lead to chronic diseases or to carcinogenesis through transformation of the host cell.

From this universe of possibilities, the mechanisms of mimicry of the viruses to avoid the detection and destruction in the host, as well as the mechanisms of the viral latency states and those which conduce to reactivation are exciting research areas in which I would like to improve my theoretical and practical knowledge, since I am convinced of the importance of the results of the research in this area for the improvement of the quality of life of immunosuppressed persons and transplant recipients, principally.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Option 3

Finally, and not because of it less important, the research field of molecular biology calls my attention, and especially the research aim that investigate the relationship between infection and cancer and the exploration of signalling pathways to find the clue that conduces to resistance to apoptosis.

Not only the mechanisms of reprogramming the host cells, but also the discover of new apoptotic signalling pathways that could not be blocked by intracellular pathogens as Chlamydia, who uses an anti-apoptotic mechanism to avoid the elimination.

These investigations could give a hope to patients with respiratory infections by Clamydia pneumoniae, since they pursue to find a strategy that could avoid the advance of the disease to its persistent state, and indirectly to the onset of cancer.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Letter of motivation:

I am writing to express my great interest in applying for the preparatory- (PhD) program in the X Institute in Berlin.

I studied microbiology at the University of R in City, Land, from 1997 to 2002, where I obtained a Bachelor degree. During my studies, I was always a curious and research-active student, since I knew that to pursue a scientific career, one most begin early. Therefore, I tried to research in different areas like parasitology, in which I could take part of an research project at the Tropical Parasitology and Microbiology Research Center that wanted to apply the PCR technique to detect infective forms of Toxoplasma gondii in pork for human consumption.

After finishing my studies, I worked for a while in the quality-control field. During this time, I learn a lot of my self and of working with people of different disciplines, who teach me the discipline and organisation of a company. I also strengthen my conviction of being a scientist.

For that reason, I came to Germany, to learn state-of-the-art techniques from highly qualifying scientists and to have an important experience of studying abroad. Currently, I study Sciences at the University of ER, and complementary to my subjects, I have attended lectures and practical courses like biochemistry, immunology, virology, human genetics and signal transduction.

This program is one of the few that offers me the opportunity to reach a Ph. D degree without a prior master degree through a preparatory program. I am prepared intellectually to participate in this program, and I am eager to learn, to contribute and to complement my knowledge with different disciplines, and the knowledge of recognized scientists that collaborate to this program.

The program offers an exciting interdisciplinary scenario, in which I could have the opportunity to study what I pursue as scientist: to understand the interplay between pathogens and hosts, to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of this interaction and its influence in the host signalling pathways.

I would be grateful if you consider me for the preparatory program as a high-recommended candidate.

Please I need help with these letters of motivation!

Hi collaborative members!

PLEASE check my letter of motivation

Hello,
could anybody please correct my letter of motivation?
I have it checked thousand times, but I'm afraid there are still mistakes that I will never find, no matter how often I read it.

Thank you very much.
Greetings, Veronika

I hereby wish to state my interest for a place in your Master of Arts programme in European Public Administration.

After graduation from highschool in june 2001, I started studying at the college of public administration in Meißen in september the same year.

During the theory semesters we were prepared for the various demands in public organisations through different courses in the three fields of law, public finances and social sciences. Especially the subject European Law, in which we learned about the historical background of the European Union, the European Institutions and their functioning, the european legislative procedure and material european law, was of special interest to me.

I therefore took the chance to attend a voluntary tutorial dealing with the topic “Europe in Germany” which I successfully finished with a seminar paper as well as I attended several language courses to improve my English and French and to learn Spanish.

Furthermore two practical terms, where the students could gain practical experience built a basic part of my studies at the college of public administration.
Besides the training courses in various local and state authorities in Saxony, I absolved a part of my main training course in the European Bureau of Saxon Local Authorities in Brussels from september 2003 till october 2003. There I was able to apply my knowledge of the functioning of the European Institutions and other regional representations and to broaden my knowledge about the regional policy of the European Union, particularly about the Structural Funds. My duties during this time included especially the gathering of information relevant to local organisations and providing it to the regional and local authorities in Saxony as an article in the weekly newsletter “Brüssel Aktuell”.
This work was both exciting and challenging, as my duties and responsibilities were quite different from those I had before and most tasks had to be accomplished in the French or English language.

The knowledge gained during my studies and the training course in Brussels showed me the deep impact of the European level on every aspect of daily life and confirmed my decision to base my diploma thesis on this interesting field as well as my intention of working professionally in the european sector in the future.

I was therefore glad to be permitted to write my diploma thesis on the topic “The build-up of a German-Polish Administration Network” and to have every support from my professor to realize this project. One of my proudest moments was when I gave a speech on this topic at the meeting “Forum Wegzeichen” in Meißen in April this year, which was followed by the decisive step toward the realisation of the network, an agreement to establish an incorporated society signed by about 40 Saxon and Lower Silesian employees of administrations that are interested in transnational cooperation.

After my final examinations in September 2004 I could practice and complement my knowledge in public administration when I started working in the city administration of Bautzen. Firstly in the personnel department and then in the building authority. During this time I could work independently and gain wide experience in cooperation with colleagues and the public. As well as extending my language skills by learning Sorbian, a proudly cherished language speciality of our Lausitz region.

As it is my future goal to work in the european sector, I am keenly interested in aquiring more theoretical knowledge and practical skills in this area.
It was also in Brussels that I first learned about the opportunity to get a masters degree in European Public Administration from a trainee-colleague, who was an MPA-student at that time. Since he explained to me precisely what I should expect from the programme and what is expected of me, I am convinced that the Master of European Public Administration corresponds well with my future plans and with my qualifications aquired during previous lectures, seminars and work experiences.
After I went through the course structure of your M.A. and read carefully the overview and the objectives of every single course, I was sure that this programme perfectly matches with my interests. Courses concerning the European community law, the current political problems of the European Integration and cross-cultural competence are very fascinating and intriguing to me. Moreover such a postgraduate programme will be beneficial for me in several ways. First of all I can complete my theoretical knowledge about various european-related topics and practice my language skills of English and French.
Additionally, I was very pleased to find out that the programme includes a period of practical training abroad in a European Union country because I am of the opinion that every academic knowledge gained should be applied and utilized through work experience. Last but not least, there is a growing need for trained and experienced professionals in the european sector and the degree ”Master of European Public Administration” has a very good reputation in this field.

Bearing in mind what, on the one hand, my interests, prospects and qualifications are, and what, on the other hand your postgraduate study programme offers, I am very enthusiastic and eager to undertake this challenge.

Thank you very much for considering my request, I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,
Letter of Motivation

Hello,

could anybody please check my letter of motivation?
I'm not ready yet - the last lines are still missing - but I must hurry up and I'm afraid you have not time enough to answer when I wait until I have really finished it.
So the last lines will follow.
(When I was not sure which word to use, I put the alternative in brackets or I set a / )

Thanks a lot, Veronika

I hereby wish to state my interest for a place in your Master of Arts programme in European Public Administration.

After graduation from collge/gymnasium in june 2001, I started studying at the college of public administration in Meißen in september the same year.

During the (its) theoretical semesters we were prepared for the various demands in public organisations (with a main focus on its/their new requirements) through different courses in the three fields of law, public finances and social sciences.
Especially the subject European Law, in which we learned about the historical background of the European Union, the European Institutions and their functioning, the european legislative procedure and material european law, was on/of my special interest.

Therefore/on that account I took the chance to attend a voluntary tutorial dealing with the topic “europe in germany” which I successfully finished with a seminar paper as well as I took part in different language courses to improve my english and french and to learn spanish.

Furthermore two practical terms, where the students could gain practical experiences, built a basic part of my studies at the university of applied sciences / college of public administration
Besides the training courses in various local and state authorities in Saxony, I absolved a part of my main training course in the European Bureau of Saxon Local Authorities in Brussels from september 2003 till october 2003.
