i was writing a letter of motivation for a master degree.
please help me review the letter..

I appreciate this opportunity to provide further background information in support of my application for Master in International Tourism management at Hochschule Bremen University of Applied Science.

I graduated from Economic Department of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) on February 19,2008. To support my academic background, I spent my time to attend many activities. I was a tresurer for Marketing Students Organization (HIMMAPER) and coordinated some others activities. I also worked as Senior High School mathematic tutor at Primagama group Yogyakarta for two years. The past nine months I worked at Pulau Weh â Sabang Tourism Association. The goal is to Develope new sector of tourism in order to provide job for local people and enticing a dynamic entrepreneurship culture post tsunami and conflict. I also responsible for promoting Pulau Weh through website and organize training for local people the skill they need in the tourism industry. The experiences mentioned above has improved my leadership, communication skill, conflict management, ability to work under pressure and unsupervised.

Aceh has many natural resources which not yet developed. Pulau Weh is one of the best resource for tourism industry, it possesses many charms, on land and beneath the sea, as well as within its culture and built environment. Pulau Weh has just enough infrastructure and tourism facilities to readily envision that further development would transform it into a popular destination for Indonesian and foreign tourists alike. But it doesnât has professional human resource to develop it. Which is the reason I applied for MBA in International Tourism at Hochschule Bremen University of Applied Science to learn more knowledge about tourism development and applied it in Aceh and Pulau Weh (Sabang) Specially.

I first became interested in multimedia development and web-based applications twelve years ago. Since 2001, I am working as a project manager and developer in a leading internet agency in my country. Hello everyone,

First of all, thank you to all the people who are supporting this website and the posts of the Forum Gurus, who helped me to understand the essentials of writing a letter of motivation.

I'm based in EU and I'm applying for a job as a multimedia developer. It is required to provide one example of my multimedia production. I plan to submit a flash movie which I have developed recently.

My questions are:

1. Should I mention this example in my motivation letter supplying more details about it or to attach the file with no extra explanations? Just to note that the application is online (no paper copies of the CV and LoM).

2. Should I put my name, address and telephone number at the top right corner of the LoM?

Looking forward to your replies.

P.S.: Once I have a draft of my Motivation letter I will post it here.

Hi all,

I'm Indonesian and I will apply to Dutch Studies program at Leiden University next year. Please take a look at my motivation letter. It's started pretty straightforward and I'm wondering if it would sounds strange. This letter doesn't include very much details such as my age, nationality, enrollment year etc as those qualifications have beeen mentioned in the CV. Any comments will be highly appreciated.

LETTER OF MOTIVATION

Basically I donât have any formal education background in linguistic field. I took accounting degree and have been working in the field of accounting ever since. Yet, though limited, I grew up hearing and speaking several languages: Javanese, Dutch and English. My grandmother speaks Dutch fluently and my mother and aunt took English major back in the university. As a child, I already learned how to count and speak simple sentences in Dutch. I learned my first English by watching television and reading comic books and when I went to a traditional market I liked using Javanese to be able to bargain more.

Living in Indonesia with its many tribes and each tribe with its own vernaculars, I find it amusing to see how people react once they know you can speak even a little bit of their language. Iâm also interested in seeing how language and culture are closely affects each other. I supposed that is the reason why I typically look to work in an international environment. Even within accounting division, my tasks often require me to deal with people from different countries. My first employment was at EF where besides accounting experiences, I also learn a lot about communication from having to deal with teachers from many different countries such as USA, UK and Australia. My second employment again required me to deal with suppliers from China and Malaysia, and my present employment put me in high frequencies of written communication with staffs from India, Hong Kong, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Spain. All those experiences enhance not only my interest in languages but also my social and communication skill. Though not directly related to my previous study, my past employments combined with my interest in language has encouraged me to take deeper study.

As an accountant, I was trained to analyze things closely. It became habit and I analyze almost everything, many times also myself. After some years in accounting field I realized that even though I enjoyed being an accountant, I also have ability in communicating with people. I enjoy analyzing people, listening to their problems and then trying to help them find the best solutions available. I like to state things into diplomatic arguments, to assure peopleâs acceptance of some circumstances or ideas [U1] . Those aptitude combined with deeper study in language will be a great personal asset. For that reason I would like to develop my skills in language and communication. In the future I was looking for careers in an international field that mainly could fulfill my thirst of challenge, whether in accounting, communication or linguistic capacity that somehow enable me to contribute into the societyâs benefit; such as in the non profit organization or governmental institution.

While English is the first foreign language I speak fluently [U2] , my specific interest in Dutch language grew among others because Dutch has been a very familiar language for me, even before I started to learn English. The historical bound between Indonesia and the Netherlands put the Netherlands into one of the first foreign country I learnt about at school. My interest in the Dutch Studies program at Leiden University has much to do with the information I obtain regarding its interdisciplinary program and some good references I acquired from my Dutch course teachers and families staying in the Netherlands[U3] . With its international orientation, complete curriculum and highly qualified lecturers, Iâm ensured that this program is the best place to learn about the Netherlands, its language, history and culture.

In the past few years I have gained knowledge and capability needed to undertake this study. My professional experiences have strengthened my self-managerial skill, and my personal maturity makes me reliable and responsible. My familiarity with international environment will help me to adapt socially. Iâm fond of sports, reading, dancing and singing; which tells that Iâm a casual person. But then again, I like challenges and Iâm serious in relation to matters I decide to achieve. Iâm well aware of the programâs heavy load especially during the first year, and Iâm prepared to comply with all the requirements this programâs offering.

I am applying for LLM Program and have to write a letter of motivation.
It would be just great if someone who knows a lot about this type of letter (and English ) could read it and give me some good advice.

soooo here it goes:

Dear Madam or Sir,

I am writing to you in connection with the LLM by Dissertation and Coursework Program starting February 2008 at the Victoria University of Wellington, for which I would like to apply. In the following letter I will explain why I think that the Victoria University of Wellington is the ideal university for me.

First of all I would like to give you some background information about me. I was raised in a small town called N### situated in Israel next to Tel Aviv. I left Israel with my family when I entered the tenth grade to a nice small town called H#### in Germany. Later I moved to the German University city G####, where I graduated law school and finished on 21 of May 2007 the first Staatsexamen (State Law examination) in the state Hessen in Germany with 10.56 points i.e. with the German âPrÃ¤dikatâ (outstanding results - in comparison: national average: about 6.0 points). And I am working now for six month as a legal assistant at ###### (LLP) in F##### at the ###### department and at the ##### department.

During the time in H##### I have participated (both as a participant and as an interpreter) in many exchange programs such as the exchange program between the ##### High School in Pennsylvania and #### Gymnasium ##### or the German- Poland Israel Canoe Sportsman exchange. Additionally after I graduated high school I have been backpacking on my own in G#### for a month (with a ZIS scholarship) and composed a report about the synagogues in G#### while visiting the different Jewish communities in G####. The different people and places that I have visited due to this time made me more open to the world and ultimately, more curious to experience more.

During my study in G#### I gained a broad interest field. I have studied as a double study economics during the third till the six term. I participated in the annual commercial arbitration Moot-Court in Vienna and represented the University of G##### at the oral proceedings, I wrote different Seminars and worked for almost two years at the professorship of professor #######, which is a professorship for criminal law, criminal proceedings and international criminal law. During this time I have done some research for example about comparative law esp. about euthanasia and suicide in Germany and in Israel - from criminal and ethical aspects.

Due to this, the main focus of my law study was economic law, international criminal law and international civil law. On account of this international focus it is my hope learn in the future more about different law systems and Jurisdictions in other countries and to work at this field.

Since I read in the Internet and in the handbook of postgraduate law (2007) about the Victoria University of Wellington I think that writing a LLM by dissertation and coursework will be a good opportunity for me to do research in aboard and to learn about a foreign law System. I hereby believe, that the option of doing a LLM by dissertation and coursework will give me on one hand the opportunity to visit several different courses that matches my fields of interest (international criminal- civil law and economic law) and on the other hand will give me an option to deal intensly one legal subject during the dissertation (ideally about the legal handling of suicide and euthanasia in New Zealand).

Additionally it is a common knowledge that any work at an international field requires very good English skills that can only be gained by living in an English speaking country.

New Zealand is my first choice as a foreign country for my LLM, both because fellow students have spoken very highly of the education in New Zealand and the LLM program in the Victoria University of Wellington in particular, and because, as a member of the DAV (German Alps Association) a hobby wall climber, hiker and a former member of the "Kanu Club M####" (canoe club) I always dreamed about visiting New Zealand.

Hi,

attracting attention is of course your main aim but you should do this without backfiring:-) There are many diverse ways how to attract attention. In my opinion, you had chosen not the best one but of course this is only my opinion.

They don't need the full description of your course. This should stay in the CV, not in the covering letter. You can refer to the course and show how the course has improved your skills as you did below. I would recommend to drop the first part of the second paragraph become this part leads to nowhere.

Proposal:

Following my strong interests and deducation I recently specialised (BrE) in economics and languages. To ensure the development of my knowledge, I attended a special program of the Commercial College at the Berufskolleg Neuss which focused on European Business, whereas the economical (according to my book and google) courses were completely in English.

Furthermore, after the first year concentration on theory, I've accomplished a work placement by the finance company LBS which had improved my knowledge in finance and sharpened my ability to work with clients. It was followed by an other work placement in Eastbourne, England in order to improve my English skills. At the Association fo Charity Shops I had the opportunity to gain experience within many of the departments and to work in English which has always appealed to me.

My further work placement at the advertising agency BBDO enabled me to experience work under pressure and with full responsibility.

Sorry, but I'm not really sure what I am writing about. It has something to do with your application

Question about writing an English CV

I am French, leaving in the US and need to prepare a CV and a letter of motivation for a position in the UK. In reading many posts on this (neat) forum, I noticed that there are many differences in the format of CVs for each country and I would like to make sure that what I read seems appropriate. I'd appreciate benefiting from any input the "experts" may have in this exercise.

CV:
It seems like it is common to enter personal information at the beginning of the CV, such as date of birth, nationality, marital status etc. Is this correct?
I read that contact information (email, address, phone number) should always be at the end of the CV. True/False?
If anyone has experience in the redaction of CVs in both countries I would greatly appreciate any input.

Letter of motivation:
Again there seems to be minor differences which ..... can make a difference. As an example we (US) punctuate "Dear Sir;" and it seems UK correct typing would be "Dear Sir,". The content itselfl is pretty much "universal" and very well detailed in many other posts.
Are there any specifics in regards to punctuation, paragraph spacing, ending formulas (instead of the brief "Sincerely," we use here) that should be used to taylor both of these documents so it sort of proves that, at least, an effort has been made to customize the letter to the recipient?

I am applying to this Master's Programme and they require a letter of motivation. I am wondering, is my letter any good?

Here is my letter:

To the Election board of Bioinformatics Master's Degree Programme;

I would like to express my interest for attending the Bioinformatics Masterâs Degree Programme at the University *****.

I received my Masterâs in Biochemistry from ****** 23.4.2002. In my Masterâs thesis I studied the interactions between cyclodextrins and small molecular ligands using the AutoDock 3.0 docking software package.

After completing my Masterâs I have worked as a research assistant/PhD student at the****** in the field of cellular and molecular biology of bone cells. During this work I became familiar with several sequence analysis tools, namely database searching alignment tools and primer design. I have come to realise that I want to get a deeper insight into these tools and methods and that is why I am interested in the Bioinformatics Masterâs Programme.

My aim is to work in the Pharmaceutical or Biotech industry and I am certain that the Bioinformatics Masterâs Programme will provide me with the necessary knowledge and skills to purse my career goals.
