LETTER OF MOTIVATION

I always wanted to be an explorer. The constant urge to explore the unexplored and understand the unknown motivates me and move me forward in life.

Right from my schooldays, mathematics, physics and geography are my favourite subjects. These subjects always invoked my curiosity and the desire âto seeâ. As a sincere student, I secured high marks in Class 10 and Class 12 and was among the top 100 students of the state. My passion and diligent efforts led me to IIT Kharagpur through IIT JEE examination which is considered the toughest examination of the world. My interest in science and geography and my creative nature encouraged me to take up architecture.

Architecture as a discipline introduced me to the vast diversity of the world, its cultures, landforms, society, and people. It developed an analytic as well as synthetic sense in me. The desire to see and learn knew no bounds. I wanted to supplement my theoretical knowledge with practical activities. A travel scholarship enabled me to study the indigenous houses and construction techniques of the Khasis in the deep valleys of Cherrapunji around the highest rainfall region of the world. For the first time I saw how carefully and sensitively, these people utilize nature and maintain a constant balance. Inspired by this new knowledge, I underwent another study tour inside Simlipal Tiger Reserve and stayed there for a period of 7 days with the Bhuniya tribes. Once again I observed the delicate balance these indigenous people maintain with the nature and enjoy a healthy living.

The biggest opportunity came to me when I was selected for an internship in Paris, FRANCE. Coming from my back ground, I received a cultural shock observing the world moving on the streets of Paris. Also working in an international office with an unknown language was a daunting task for me. However I slowly overcame this and worked dedicatedly on the project, the most important of which is the great mosque of Algeria. To intimate deeply and enrich myself with finer knowledge of life, I worked in a theatre production. The diverse activities I underwent enriched me culturally and supplemented my objective curiosity.

I underwent two courses in Physics of Solid Earth and Climate Modelling. I have a keen interest to undertake research in the field of geography. My major field of interest is in habitats in forests and cold environment. I want to learn and understand the sustainable methods by which nature can be utilized, delicately and optimally. Through my previous experiences I am aware of the complete dedication and commitment that research calls for. I strongly believe that through a balance of courses and practical projects I have acquired the requisite experience, expertise and mindset to carry out research in a structured and effective manner in this challenging task.

In conclusion I am confident that I possess the motivation, intellectual ability and the preparation to succeed in a demanding graduate program. I am aware of the hard work and perseverance necessary for research work and I am sure that my aptitude and drive will see me through the challenge. I sincerely hope that you will find me a worthy candidate and provide me an opportunity to contribute to your research endeavour.

This board has been very helpful in writing my statement of purpose for my uni applications (postgrad studies in development studies) - especially the tutorial on how to write such a letter. The person I wanted to give it to for proof-reading and feedback, is currently defending her Phd and has absolutely no time... so I thouht, maybe I could get some feedback here? I would appreciate it very much!

Here's my draft:

This summer I will be awarded my BA degree at the University of [name of current university] in Switzerland, approximately ten years after my High-School peers. I cannot say that I've always wanted to study international development. In fact, my rather late decision to pursue an academic education is the result of a long and careful reassessment of my career. I came to the point where I felt that my professional activity in the field of business IT did not meet my personal ambitions to do something that would make a difference for society in one way or the other. I realised, that I needed a major career change and switched from business IT to human resources process management as a first step in the process of redirecting my career in a more humanitarian direction. After two years of seriously re-evaluating my personal objectives, I came to the conclusion that I want to aim at a career in development. My goal is to work conceptually on programming and evaluating development projects for the United Nations, a governmental development agency or an international NGO, wherever possible taking a gendered perspective.

The next and maybe most important step towards reaching this goal was to commence my academic studies at the University of Fribourg. I adapted quickly to being a student again and enjoy the encouraging and inspiring environment of a university ever since. I have been studying Social work and Social Policy as a major and Social Anthropology as a minor. My studies are focussed on social policy, social research, gender issues, human rights and migration. I feel that my choice of classes (please refer to my grade transcripts) provides me with a broad and solid basis to specialise on development issues in my MA.

My BA programme being highly research oriented, I have been able to acquire considerable research skills working on our BA thesis on the labour situation of clandestine migrant women in Switzerland and their coping strategies with their precarious situation. Additionally I've been offered the opportunity to conduct qualitative interviews for a project assessing the non profit sector in Switzerland under the guidance of Prof. Dr. [name of professor] at the department of Social Work and Social Policy at the [name of current university].

My professional background provides me, in addition to specific knowhow, a variety of skills beneficiary to my academic work as well as my future activity in development. I learnt to take responsibility, how to handle pressure and to meet deadlines, how to manage projects, to work in a team as well as analytical thinking and communicational skills. Additionally I've been able to develop leadership skills and gain experiences in university politics in my positions as president of the students' equality commission and head of communications department of my branches student body committee.

When one of the lecturers of an interdisciplinary gender studies seminar I attended in fall term 2007 offered me the opportunity to attend the 52nd session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York this February, I grasped this chance without hesitation. I was free to chose from all of the events offered by international NGOs and permanent missions to the UN and took part in the NGO consultation as well as in workshops like "Promoting Gender Equality and the MDGs - Progress, Strategies and Finances", "...", "..." and "...". Participation in these workshops further strengthened me in my determination to become a development professional. I was particularly impressed by the combination of academic understanding, personal conviction and political mission noticeable at the conference.

I am aware that reaching my goal will be highly competitive. Being a very targeted and ambitious person, however, I'm determined to do my very best at working towards it. The more lectures and seminars I've followed, the more I've read during my BA studies, the more I've become aware of how little I actually know. This understanding has further contributed to my determination to continue learning as much as I can. I feel that the international environment of the University of Bath as well as the possibility offered by your MSc programme in international development of acquiring a solid understanding of different perspectives and concepts in development before choosing my own areas of special interest to focus on will prepare me in the best possible way for my future plans.

Letter of Motivation

I wish to apply for admission to pursue a Masterâs Degree in Diplomacy at Yale University in September 2008.

Prior to my university study, diplomacy has always influenced my choice of study stemming from the fact that diplomacy is an important factor in the development of any society. Why? Society needs decisive leaders on the international scene, to protect its interests.

My university academic background is based on two major disciplines, Public Administration and history, which are some of the core subjects in diplomacy. There the curriculum for Political Science and History was based on Administrative Responsibility and Accountability and International Relations.

I studied in two areas related to diplomacy because I believed that I would be preparing myself to pursue a career in diplomacy or working in an international organization and to become a leader whose decision would have a positive effect on society. During my studies at the university, I was involved in various presentations, brainstorming, and discussion groups in which I had the opportunity to start training my leadership skills. By the time I successfully completed my studies, I had acquired excellent leadership, administrative, and organizational skills. I was inspired to think critically, reflect and put forward my ideas, and go beyond surfaces. I have learned to apply critical thought to real life situations. I believe the sum of all this makes me suitable to pursue a Masters in diplomacy.

After three years of study, I was employed to head the developement program of an international non governmental organization. Why a fresh graduate to head the program? This was a result of the development programs I submitted to the organization prior to my interview. I clearly exhibited my leadership skills through the various programs I initiated such as the youth leadership program aimed at youths. We thought them to carry out responsibilities bestowed on them. As well our aim was to reduce juvenile delinquency, and to improve the life of the under privileged by introducing several ways of generating income.

In 2001, I decided to go abroad to expand my work experience in an international arena, experience a foreign culture, and broaden my scope on life. England is my prime destination due to its growing economy and its role in international politics. I was employed to head the international department of a foreign company, specializing in labor import, exportation and developmental project analysis and implementation. Here, I have the chance to work on an international level and improve my intercultural skills. Within an international team, I work on competitive development programs for foreign companies looking for suitable developmental projects. I write reports about their strategy and implementation.

While working in England, I always ponder why Africa and other parts of the world are plagued with civil and tribal wars, political crises, and slow economic growth. Most of the peace talks always turn out to be futile thus paving the way for more fighting and political problems in our society. After a careful analysis of the whole situation, I realize that Africa and other parts of the world needs leaders with strong technical and analytical skills to solve these problems. As a result, I am motivated to pursue a master degree in in diplomacy. This is going to lead me to my career ambition of being a diplomat.

After a careful research and analysis of more than thirty universities in terms of their programs and course structures, I chose Yale Universitybecause of its well defined Masters of diplmacy program, I believe I will go a long way to enhance my leadership skills. Its mobility program with other outstanding universities will give me the opportunity to interact with fellow students from different cultural backgrounds, views and opinions. Its creative and analytical seminars are also an impetus in my decision to study at the institute. Taking part in such seminars, I will be building a strong foundation for my future career.

I graduated in 2000 with a bachelorâs degree in architecture. During my years in architecture school, my interest turned from architectural design to the design that not only communicates but also interacts with the user. So I decided to conduct professional career as a web designer since graduated until now.

In developing country like Thailand, small and medium businesses which run by native investor are growing rapidly. Due to small asset, these businesses can not afford high price propaganda like TV commercial or magazine advertising. Nevertheless, they still need media that can exhaustively demonstrate their information with cheaper expense. Therefore website is an appropriate solution to choose. In addition, more advantages of website are prompt update, easy access and worldwide published.

Unfortunately, the benefits of website as a real media are still overlooked. Although website is well-known in Thailand, most of them were used only for providing small information. Plain concept, few creativeness and lack of design diminish the efficiency of communication which actually should be the most advantage of World Wide Web.

I will able emphasis my understanding about how good media can transfers original idea to the audience and how can I apply this knowledge to webpage designing. LETTER OF MOTIVATION

Dear Sir or Madam,

I would like to state my motivation with regards to my choice of applying for the European Legal Studies Programme at the *** with a specialization in European Law and Economic Analysis (ELEA).

First of all since an early age I have always been attracted by the study of Law, especially European Law, and Economic Analysis of Law. In fact it is not coincidence that I received my degree in law with a dissertation on the Economic Analysis of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (both my degree and my dissertation were awarded the maximum grades possible). My interest in European law already dates from when, as a schoolboy, I decided to join the European Federalist Association. In this capacity I used to organize conferences in my native town to explain the constitutional nature of the European Communities. Growing up I was going indeed to discover the legal intricacies of the acquis communautaure. On the other hand, although I already had a penchant for Economics, my enthusiasm for Economic Analysis of Law was to be awoken by a conference in which I met Professor ***, the founder of the New Haven school and one of the leading authorities of EAL, with whom I later corresponded. Later on I studied EAL with Professor *** of University of Catania, an Oxford-trained economist, who was to become my friend and promoter, and with Professor *** of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. I also think it is noteworthy that during most of the University years I was also working as a free-lance journalist dealing mostly with Foreign Policy and European Affairs.

European Law has always been very meaningful to me for two main reasons. In primis I cannot deny that I have always been attracted by it because of my ideological convictions as an European Federalist. In secundis from a scientific perspective I believe it is the most interesting field of Law since it constitutes the emerging of a new super-national legal order that is shaping a new historical era, where the old nation-States tend to fade a bit (since I am also a lover of History I usually compare this phenomenon to the Medieval ius commune, a comparison that my old Professor of History of Law would very much appreciate). Finally I think there is so much more to study in this field, especially since it is in continuous evolution and since the actual EU cannot simply stand still. In fact with the adoption of the Euro the choice seems to have been made by many MS. EU can only grow, especially in the field of the government of the economy and, subsequently, foreign policy, or can shrink back in the remotest possibility to the minimal size from which we started.

Economic Analysis of Law has been like an intellectual awakening to me. In fact it is the instrument and the methodology that I have always wanted to use in my legal analysis. With EAL one has a meter of comparison, which is neither moral nor subjective, but at the same time that always take in account different circumstances and to give them the best possible law. To me it has become not only a methodology of study, but the philosophy of my life.

After the successful completion of my degree I started my legal internship in Italy and subsequently went on to accept a job in one of the most prestigious *** Law Firm in the field of European Law. In my new capacity I soon found possible to apply what I had previously studied. Moreover the daily contact with the top European Institutions, the multi-ethnic nature of my new working environment, the participation to the âEuropean processâ and so on, made me very enthusiastic about my new job, even if very demanding. Nonetheless I have the time to write some scientific article: one of my article on European Law is at this very moment being published by a major European editor and I am actually writing another article on EAL and the Treaty of Lisbon.

I decided to apply to the *** since this would enormously widen my study and professional opportunity. In the future I would like to continue working in the field of European Law, possibly in a European Institutions and, at the same time, I would like to pursue intellectual ambitions such a research for Think-tanks and the likes and publishing books and articles on European issues. It is in fact true to say that there is no other such program of European Law from which I could benefit so much than the one from the ***. There I hope to find the intellectual challenges of a top European *** and the European spirit that I need.

In addition to my educational and professional background, I have a strong personal motivation to study at the ***. While I am originally from the ***, I have travelled extensively within Europe and abroad. I have partaken in the Erasmus project during my third year at University, which brought me to Belgium and I have travelled to France, Luxemburg, United Kingdom and Germany on several occasions on professional visits. Consequently, I have developed strong intercultural skills and acquired a knowledge of English, French and Dutch. These factors further increase my motivation to work in an environment which requires understanding of different socio-economic systems.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply as an exchange student for the Masterâs Degree in Sociology at Newcastle University in UK for the winter semester 2008/09. I am a Russian student. I want to gain a deeper understanding of western society, its economics, politics, and culture, in order better prepare for my present career.

I have a Specialist degree in Statistics from Russian State Social University, Moscow. The date of my graduation was the 14th of July 2007. My studies focused on economy, statistics, English language, sociology and culture. And more than two years work as social worker in Centre of Social Help people with different disabilities. Currently, I am a full-time PhD student of Russian State Social University, Moscow. My research topics are Statistical analysis of populationâs level with higher educations in Russian Federation. The expected graduation time is October 2010.

After graduating from high school, I was enrolled by my favorite university: Russian State Social University, which is first Social University in Russia and one of the best and biggest Social universities in Russia. During the five years study, I continue to work as a social worker and in Youth Organization. My duties included relations with a lot of interesting and different kinds of people, data collection and analysis a lot of information from our arrangements, preparation of reports and presentations, and the coordination work between the organization side and my team. It helped me to develop a strong analytical mind and interpersonal skills. Moreover, I learnt the value of teamwork during the two-year project and became more solution-oriented. Furthermore, I found my interest toward real career was evoked and strongly enhanced.

I know that the experience of studying abroad will help me to develop myself and to improve my knowledge. It has been my ambition to study at the Newcastle University in United Kingdom since I first saw your website four months ago and now I support and discuss with your students all about your university and this program. The university program in United Kingdom is structured differently from my universities, and that is one reason for my decision and my interest in applying to your university. I learned that Newcastle University is one of the oldest and one of the best universities in the UK. I am confident that I can make a significant contribution to the classes, especially given my Russian background, and that I will gain a strong education of western society.
