Last week I sent a fax to a hotel in London in order to book a room and I addressed the letter to such Mrs. X with whom I exchange some e-mails in preceding days.

So, I knew the name of the person I was writing to, but not personally.

I began the letter writing: Dear Mrs. X

and ended with: Yours sincerely

Did I do the right choice?

Thanks for the compliments. Yes, we are all volunteers. I don't think I want to admit how much time I spend here but for me it is a way to relax. I work for myself from home and I don't have anyone to go and have a coffee break with, so when I want to take a break for ten minutes or so I come over here. It's that or wander away from my office and end up just watching TV for the rest of the day (naughty!). We all come and help out here to varying degrees. Some people can do a lot and others can only help now and then, but it's all appreciated.

We're happy for anyone to have a go at anwering the questions. You'll notice that a lot of the learners will also answer questions and it's a useful exercise for them and it's good that they can help each other. Sometimes we end up with quite a few conflicting answers but eventually it always seems to get sorted out.

Those of us who are regulars or moderators are not all English teachers. In fact I do not know what a couple of the moderators do, we do chat 'back-stage', but not always about our real lives in much detail. However, I believe that one of us is an editor, and I know that two of us are copywriters. It naturally does tend to attract people with a strong interest in language use.

When a really proficient person pops up and starts helping out we all get very excited and we hope they keep visiting regularly. We do our best to encourage these people and keep an eye on them with regards to 'promotions'. As a proficient English user, and editor, you and your 'other perspective' would be very welcome. We certainly wouldn't feel as if you were treading on our toes. We get utterly swamped with posts sometimes and can't answer everybody.

If you really want to make yourself useful, you could look at the letter writing section for us. At this time of year we get many motivation letters to check and it is difficult to keep on top of them all.

Thanks, and welcome to the forum!

Re: Best regards, Kind regards, or Yours sincerely, - which is correct

To me, the formality in letter writing has lost it’s place and no one in the new generation seems to really know what is proper and what isn’t anymore. Everyone is using Outlook for business and copies the greetings and pastes them onto the next e-mail, at least it seems that way!

I have never come across “Yours faithfully” in my 15 years in the business. Occasionally, I’d see “respectfully” and more commonly “Sincerely” but the most abused is “warm regards” or “best regards”. We hardly know each other. How warm can it be?

It seems that I posted before signing in, so do know that I have an account: NataliaJ. Also, I do have a list of potential sponsors, so there wont be any problem with that. I gave most of the information that I plan to include in the letter, just let me know how I can place it or write it, what I can add to make the reader interested.

People that Im planning to get donations from are businesses like my dentists (who probably wouldnt mind an advertisement to take credit for my smile), Juice Plus and Sun Rider (online supplement stores that I buy from weekly), JRP (the company that holds all the make-up appliance, hair styling and modeling classes), Savvy Hair Salon (where I buy most of my hair products and my hair trims and styling), O.K. hair salon (another place I get hair-related things), The Jon Gordon Companies, Inc.(an Energy building company, he wrote books like the 10-minute energy solution and inspired my platform), Beautifully Modest (an evening gown company that I do love very much), Shades (a clothes line that I buy from online), then the rest of the list is my dads company, Henrys Food Market, and other places that I buy from for supplies.

So the letter will be targeted towards them.

Thank you so much for all your help, I cannot wait to recieve all the help I can get to get the most benefit from the letters. I know that I can not do as good of a job without your help!

Kindest Regards,
