Elizabethan England was anti-Semitic: Jews had been expelled from the country during the Middle Ages, and were not allowed to return until the rule of Oliver Cromwell. Elizabethan playwrights usually depicted Jews as greedy usurers, with hideous and mocking physical features (hooked noses and bright red wigs, for example); they were characterized as evil, deceptive and greedy. In The Merchant of Venice Shakespeare continued this tradition (we know that in its days the play was known...

looking for help with my covering letter and cv..

I am looking for somebody who could check for me my covering letter and cv.. I always say on an island, not in an island. However, actual usage varies a great deal. The bigger the island is, the more likely at least some people are to use in . I taught in England for many years and certainly found no great difference to the English spoken in Malta bar the accent which is certainly not as harsh as some found in parts of England and America. Some of my students say it is easier to understand the English spoken in Malta as they find it very difficult to understand some Americans as indeed I must admit I do.But then one could say the same of many accents.Remember the vast number who speak Britsh English all over the world.

Re: Informal Letter Composition.

Anonymous wrote: I had to write an essay of not longer than 200 and 250 words. I'm studying English and I'm especially interested in the linguistic situation of Malta. Can we find any linguistic differences between British English and the English spoken in Malta? If so, what kind of differences, exactly? I mean, can we find, for instance, differences in pronunciation, vocabulary or even syntax? I'd really appreciate it if someone who lives or has ever been there could give me some examples or tell me his opinion.
What I wonder is: we talk about British, Irish, or Australian English, but can we also talk about Maltese English?
Thanks in advance!

Re: I would like to start reading books

Recommend on Hard to say without a sentence. Dear Sir or Madame,

During my high school days I finished all the classes in English that were provided to us.
From the course A to the advanced course C. I did the final exam of the B course in the beginning of the second year in High school, I felt I had the knowledge to pass the grade without attending the classes and so I did.

Also, a lot depends on what particular skills you want to achieve or practise while in an English-speaking country. I myself have never been to Malta but I've been to Canada and Britain. Canada is a very good country for learning English (or French if you are learning French) but in this country a similar problem exists. The thing is Canada is known for its huge number of immigrants. Believe me that not all of them speak perfect English. As for Britain, this is probably the best place for improving your English. Very few people with poor English and lots of people willing to help you if you've got a problem or simply want to talk about something. But...

Re: Has anyone been to Malta? ~(for learning English)

Hi Openmind,
it makes much more sense to travel to an 'English speaking' country such as the US or the UK. There you will have plenty of authentic (real life) situations where you can practice and improve your English.
Of course, this also depends on the student's English skills. Highly advanced students seldom learn that much in real life situations. For students, whose English is at a near-native or native-like level, I'd recommend academic studies in the field of English literature or Applied English linguistics.

If you think you can learn English in an English school, you actually might be better of staying in Hong Kong. Why travel to Malta where you will be sitting in a room with other people who are struggling to build correct English sentences? If you want to meet and mingle with English native speakers it makes much more sense to travel to an 'English speaking' country such as the US or the UK. There you will have plenty of authentic (real life) situations where you can practice and improve your English. Malta is a great place to sunbathe and swim.
