In truth, people often fear someone or something that they love will be taken. No matter what forms of love they are,I agree that fear is really an important agent that makes you hate your ex-lover.

In consumed love, religion and culture tend to trace a deep influence in this emotion. You will feel a sentiment of culpability when involving in this triangle love due to the concept of marital fidelity in monoganous marriage and in the prohibition of adultery in thought of the seventh commandment. There is no abnormal if you hate your ex-lover. Not only is hate a combination of love and fear but it's also clearly affective as grief and jalousy. It is possible to be over this negative emotion.Who has the greatest emotional control is the person often gets his way.

In romance, you must put yourself in competition. There are numerous broken relationship that began in sweet love and ended in bitter anger and hate in this game Love is emotion of wanting while jalousy is emotion of having. Thus, you should ask yourself the reason why you hate your ex-lover,the reason you think you hate him or her, and do you feel good to hate him or her?Would it be fair to hate someone if he meant no harm to anyone?

In true love, you have nothing to lose and nothing to gain.So there is no jealousy.Who have the most to gain have the greatest to deceive. Who have the least to gain and want nothing and who give everything, they can love perfectly. In this unconditional love, there is no desire and reciprocation. How can you fear a rival and how can you hate your ex-lover in case of the break? There was no doubt that displacement was the best way to sold the problem. Indeed, an emotion can only overcome by a stronger emotion. It's really a bad condition if you should empathizing a love's joy with another lover when true love couldn't be fleeting .So, there is a small step between hate and love.True love is always feared by most people because it can never be repressed.A famous Vietnamese monk has advised us:"No matter where or when you live, you would find materials needs (such as food and drink..) very important to keep and develop your love instead of looking at the after glow to build a cloudy castle of love"

Love is sacrifice of sorts so forgiveness is the only way of ceasing to feel resentment or anger against another person. In some context, it may granted without any expectation of compensation and without response ie; we may forgive a person who is dead. The sad truth that many people lived their life in anger and hate and they were easily slighted and took a malign pleasure in hurting others. Therefore love is good for us.Those who love most are happiest while those who hate most live in abysmal dark sadness.

Nothing could be more generous than forgiveness. So spare a smile and forgive for those unhappy people who would hurt you most. You won't feel hate anyone even the ex-lover, the person who makes you painful to live in anger ,jalousy and grief .Try to find an another, you will feel better than living in this complex emotion .May be you haven't truly loved .In true love ,you want nothing and give everything so it's difficult to fear that you might be hurt.

Re: Which one is correct?
One can have trouble with marriage, job and finance at the same time, so what is wrong with plurals, as in "having troubles"!

Re: Love VS Marriage*

Well, love in its true sense is nothing but sharing & giving and marriage is a condition U become paralyzed, and wondering if the partner really loves U.

In the 1st, you're asking about the will/desire of the other person. This is a
direct question about his/her being willing/intending to go through the marriage. As
GG states, this is about facts.

The 2nd has more doubts, involves more speculation. Just trying to find
what the other person thinks about such a development, e.g. "Under
various conditions (perhaps none, but ...), do you think that you are
interested in marrying me?" Not exactly, but you must know the true
meaning of the conditional (which this one is) from your native
language.

2)

You're not more intelligent than your actions.
You're as smart as your actions are showing you to be.
Re: Answers in a questionnaire

Pastsimple wrote:

Hi,

one of the questions you can often find in a questionnaire is "What is your greatest achievement?" People use different grammar structures/tenses etc. when they're answering, e.g.:

gerund: losing weight / surviving a tough childhood / etc...

present perfect: (that) I've lost weight / (that) I've...

past simple: I was accepted as a student at ... / I was accepted as...

Could you please answer the following questions?

1. Does the last example imply that the person's days at university are over? I'd say so.

2. Would you write "I survived a tough childhood" or "I've survived a tough childhood"? I'd go for the former. (To me "I survived a tough childhood" is just a fact about the past (i.e. I survived and it's over) whereas "I've survived a tough childhood", if correct, means "Look, I'm here and I'm alive" to me in the context of this questionnaire)

3. Would "I lost weight" sound odd? I'd say so - to me, it implies that the person has put on weight again. Therefore, losing weight couldn't be considered an achievement here.
(note on 2 and 3: if you lose weight, you can put it on again BUT when you survive your childhood, you can't "unsurvive" it - i.e. die in your childhood)

4. What about "being accepted as a student at..."? Sounds completely OK to me.

5. If you were still studying at that university, would you always use the present perfect version - "I've been accepted"? Would the past simple be possible at all here in this case? To be honest, it doesn't sound that bad to me.

6. What would be your general guidelines as to when to use the gerund / past simple / present perfect in the answer? I'd say:
a. gerund - universal
b. past perfect - in achievements like losing weight , i.e. the achievement may not be permament, it's still valid
c. past simple - all except b.

I'm not sure how the "accepted as a student" example would fit in, though.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I've just reread my post. How come the "be" precedes the subject in my question (#6)? I'm quite sure it's OK that way.

By the way, I've heard people say:

"What would/will be the result if.... ?" and "What would/will the result be if...?"

It's indeed a strange thing this position of "be" in questions with the future simple / present perfect simple / conditional....

This implies he is not as heavy as before. Perfect tense is fine.

past simple: I was accepted as a student at UCLA before I graduated high school. –ok to me.

Could you please answer the following questions?

1. Does the last example imply that the person's days at university are over? I'd say so.

I disagree. Consider this: what if the person was making this statement while he is in his second year of college? To determine the right answer to your question, it would have to depend on the full context.

2. Would you write "I survived a tough childhood" or "I've survived a tough childhood"?

I survived / suffered a tough childhood. This implied you are now an adult. Childhood is over. Unless you have additional events tied to your childhood. i.e. I had survived / suffered a tough childhood between my parents’ devoice and remarriage.

3. Would "I lost weight" sound odd? I'd say so - to me, it implies that the person has put on weight again. Not necessarily true. Consider this: Mary started a dietary and exercise program 3 months ago. Yesterday, she weighed and found herself 25 pounds lighter. She could say “ I lost weigh!”. That’s why we can’t determine the right answer with a one-liner.

4. What about "being accepted as a student at..."? Sounds completely OK to me.

Ok to me too…

5. If you were still studying at that university, would you always use the present perfect version - "I've been accepted"? Would the past simple be possible at all here in this case? To be honest, it doesn't sound that bad to me. <IMG alt="Wink <img src=" />" src="/emoticons/emotion-5.gif">

If you are still in high school and you are telling your friend that you have been accepted by UCLA, it’s perfectly fine. In fact, past simple won’t work well in this case.

6. What would be your general guidelines as to when to use the gerund / past simple / present perfect in the answer? I'd say:
a. gerund - universal
b. past perfect - in achievements like losing weight , i.e. the achievement may not be permament, it's still valid
c. past simple - all except b.

It’s not a simple answer. You have to put the gerund or questions about the tense in context with the sentence. It’s not possible to give you a guideline. It’s too vague.

The question of the century, we should be asking our self is, Should we perform abortions on demand or not allow abortion preformed at all. Some will argue that we do not have the right to perform abortions. That only God can make that decision. Other will argue that Women do have the right to receive an abortion when and where they want it.
I believe that abortions are wrong. Abortions on demand should be illegal and not allowed to be preformed. There are too many women in this world that want children, and they cannot have children them self’s. There are too many choice’s women can make without just getting rid of the baby. One such choice is to have the child, place it up for adoption. There is more than enough evidence that adoption does work. Other options are to make it mandatory 24-hour waiting period with allows a woman time to reflect about her decision to abort the pregnancy. Research also shows that women and teenage girls who are pregnant tend to have a lower suicide rate than women who are not pregnant. This suggests that the pregnancy will give the women something to live for. Other studies have shown that women and teenage girls, who have abortions, are ten times more
Are They Safe in America 3

likely to have committed suicide than women and teenage girls who get abortions. Mother’s guilty feelings and despair because of the death over their unborn child causes many suicides.
Abortion should be legal; it just depends on a society’s values and goals. If the society does not allow abortions, then it will be allowing unwanted and unhealthy
children. They do not want to have the Government to interfere in making their own private decision. If are society believes it is a personal decision then we will have an outstanding health care for children and women, then abortion should be legal. Abortion is an unpleasant fact since the early times women have sought out ways of aborting unwanted babies. If abortion were illegal, then their maybe literally thousand of illegal abortion performed in this country every year. If abortion were illegal, it would be a great mistake and would be extremely dangerous procedure, they maybe preformed in illegal clinics, by people who have little to no medical training. “Finally, abortion must remain legal in order to provide a level playing field for women and men. Women bear the biggest share of the burden where young children are
Are They Safe in America 4

concerned-- not merely because they bear children but also because they alone can provide breast milk and because women traditionally have been given primary responsibility for child care. For a woman to give birth, then, can be a severe handicap in the workplace. "Pregnant women are still expected to quit high-visibility jobs such as waitressing," points out Kathleen McDonnell, "as soon as their pregnancy
becomes obvious." Few women who take maternity leaves are paid full wages for the time they missed; many find their
jobs are not held open for them, or discover that they have been shunted to a less-demanding and lower-status "mommy track." (Currie, S (2000) Abortion Should Be Legal. Greenhaven Press.) The Supreme Court ruled as early as 1923, that the Constitution protects personal decisions regarding the family and marriage. The Court ruled in 1965 states cannot prohibit a married couple from practicing contraception. In addition, in 1972, the Supreme Court extended the right to all people the right use birth control weather married or single. In the 1973 Supreme Courts decision to legalized abortion (Roe vs Wade) this established that woman’s right were protected Constitutionally and that they were given the right to
Are They Safe in America 5

choose weather they wanted an abortion or not. Roe protects the woman’s right to privacy; it also protects the fetus by banning abortion after viability. While also protecting thousands of women’s lives from having to seek unsafe abortion from untrained medical personal. The Supreme Court decision to legalize abortions nationwide improved the lives and hearth. Since 1992 the Supreme Court has placed several restriction to abortion rights. A women’s right should precede the fetus right. A fetus shows no self-awareness until well into the second trimester. The United States has recently attempted to safeguard the fetus but this will draw arbitrary lines when the fetus is viable.

Since Husbands, Boyfriends, and Fathers are not given the chance to help decide the fate of the unborn child or if they may want to raise the unborn child or do not want to raise the unborn child. Men have NO rights in the matter. Is it wrong to force a man to support an unborn child when he does not even have the right to help decide if the unborn will be allowed to be delivered. However if the mother does not want the unborn child she can just run out and get an abortion, without even getting the unborn
Are They Safe in America 6

child father permission. This shows yes, it is a female’s body but it is also the male’s child. “How can a rational legal system contend that a father is liable for eighteen years of financial obligation by virtue of his procreative role in conception, while simultaneously disenfranchising his right to save his own pre-born child’s life, a right also rooted in his procreative role in conception? Having
both conditions co-exist in law is not only unparalleled hypocrisy, but is a violation of the USA’s most central rinciple, that rights and responsibilities must be wed and inextricable. (Flair, Isaiah (December 24, 2003) What ‘Choice’ Do Father Have. MensDailynews.com). Isaiah Flair is stating that the fathers have to take responsibility to financially support the child until it eighteen years old but not have the right to protect their unborn child’s life.
“There are still many countries in the world where women are subjected to the dogmatic religious edicts of theocracies. There are still women willing to endanger their health, future fertility, and even their lives in order to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. The religious right and the anti-abortion movement is gaining ground on
Are They Safe in America 7

this continent and abroad” (Morgenraler, G(2001)Abortion Is A Moral Choice. Greenhaven Press).
The morality of abortion provides the best illustration of the difference between humanist ethics and traditional religious attitudes. When we listen the rhetoric of the anti-abortion faction, people get the impression that every abortion kills a child. Briefly examine an idea. At the
Moment of conception when the male sperm and female egg is joins then it is a human. In addition, we should then be
Treating the unborn child, as a human is absurd. If abortions are always viewed as, murder then why are not miscarriages viewed in similar terms? Almost half of all pregnancy spontaneously shed (that is what they call miscarriage). So if a miscarriage is an “act of God” to use the common religious expression. So why does God have so little concern towards an unborn child life.
“How quickly we have lost our moral bearings! Thirty years ago all Christian churches condemned abortion as gravely immoral, and civic leaders considered the defense of human life to be their fundamental duty. But in 1973 our Supreme Court Justices found strange penumbras, never
Are They Safe in America 8
before noticed, lurking in the Constitution, and on the basis of these weird emanations, abortion was proclaimed a "constitutional right." Almost overnight, Americans, in their simplistic faith that what is legal cannot be immoral, began to exercise that "right." (Collison, Joseph (2001) the Legalization of Abortion Has Influenced Teen Attitudes toward Sex. Greenhaven Press.)
Think! What if we could discover that are unborn child is going to have blue eye’s instead brown eye’s, then should we run out an get an abortion. Before an unborn child can even take if first breathe of life, you find the child is going to be short, fat, and bald. But, wait I wanted a child that going to be blond, tall, blue eyed, right handed, and have great athletic abilities. It is like something we read in history about how Adolph Hitler attempted to build the “master race.
Since they legalized abortion, more teenagers are not caring if they get pregnant because if they do not want the baby they can just get rid of the baby. Teenagers now think they can just do what ever they want to get rid of the Babies. Is constitutionally right or Immorality wrong? The reality is we are teaching our children that is ok to have
Are They Safe in America 9

sex before being married and if something pops up they can just get rid of it.
“At least 22 states have parental-involvement laws in effect. Yet, according to the pro-abortion Center for Reproductive Law & Policy (CRLP), thousands of pregnant girls are taken across state lines by adults to obtain secret abortions, thereby circumventing these laws”.(Abraham, S Ros-Lehtinen, I (2003) Parental-Involvement Laws Protect Teens. Greenhaven Press).
A 13-year-old girl has gotten pregnant by an 18-year boy and then, for the boy’s mother to help the girl to receive an abortion by driving her to a Doctor that is out of state. Because the state of Pennsylvania requires that minor, children must receive permission from at less one parent to receive an abortion. There are large companies in New York and New Jersey take out full ad pages stating that there is no parent permission required in the state Of New York and New Jersey. This is a very dramatically situation with the teenage girl and the young man. This kind of thing is happening everyday in this country. We have adults not wanting to obey the law so they are showing our children
Are They Safe in America 10

that it is ok to do what they want. “I know now the lies I was told, the truths that were withheld from me, the facts that were glossed over or left out. As a pregnant woman, I go to my doctor's office and see pictures of babies in
tummies. Month by month, I hear my baby's heartbeat. I'm told how to do everything that's best for my baby's health”. (Colleen (2001) Abortion Is Harmful to Teenagers. Greenhaven Press.)
Victims of rape and incest have more traumas when an abortion is preformed. They often develop strong feelings and attachment to the unborn child. The pro-abortion movement has convinced many people who have been raped or conceived a child because of incest, that the unborn child will never have a worth whiled life. The pro-abortion movement has constantly show child of rape and incest of being unwanted, tainted, and even as an evil gene growing inside the victim. The pro-life view is that all the children of this world are a miracle from God even children conceived in rape and incest. The abortion culture is entirely built upon lies and deception, Those lies have destroyed nearly 40 million pre-born children, and have disfigured the lives of tens of millions more. Three
Are They Safe in America 11

decades after Roe v. Wade, we have to confront the fact that abortion has affected the lives of nearly all of us. It's very rare to find an American family that has not felt the impact of abortion in some way. Therefore, there is a
real challenge confronting those of us who seek to restore respect for life. We have to be willing, first of all, to reach out in unconditional love to women who are either considering abortion or who have made the mistake of allowing their child to be killed by an abortionist. To defeat the culture of death, we must confront it with God's love." (Grigg, WN (2002) Rape Does Note Justify Abortion. Greenhaven Press)
The Decision about abortions should come from a woman’s unique set of circumstances and may certainly be the best solution in the case of rape or serious deformity. This is why the abortions decision should be the women to evaluate her own circumstances and make honest decision about her pregnancy. To be able to determine weather she should terminate the pregnancy or continue with the pregnancy and have the child. In trying to research this side of the argument, all I was able to find was different authors telling real story accounts trying to gain sympathy
Are They Safe in America 12

of the reader. Hoping they will see that it is a women decision weather or not she gets an abortion.
Babies are a gift from God, which they should be
Cherish, loved and given every chance to life. Christians should rally against the laws that are allowing are unborn children to be destroyed.
Re: Articles

Dear Mr Pedantic,

Sorry for this long delay. This doesn't mean that I am not eager to do these exercises, I am indeed! It's only that sometimes I have a lot of homework to do. Here are my answers:

SHOULD I confess that I sometimes looked AT the door with a half-expectant wish to see IT open and give entrance to Mr. Weston, as had happened TWICE before? and [shouldn’t “and” be capitalized ?] that, returning through THE lanes and fields, I often paused to look round me, and walked more slowly than WAS at all necessary--for, THOUGH a fine evening, it was not a hot one--and, finally, felt a sense of emptiness and disappointment at [or as ?] I reached the house without meeting or EVEN catching a distant glimpse of any one, excpt a few labourers returning FROM their work? [interrogative form ?]

Sunday, however, WAS approaching: I should see him then: for now that Miss Murray was gone, I could have my old corner again. I WOULD see him, and by look, speech, and manner, I WOULD judge whether the circumstance of her marriage HAD very much afflicted him. Happily I DID perceive no shadow of a difference: he wore the same aspect as he HAD worn two months ago –voice, look, manner, all alike unchanged: there WAS the same keen-sighted, unclouded truthfulness in his discourse, the same forcible clearness in his style, the same earnest simplicity in all he SAID and DID (?), that made itself, not marked by the eye and ear, but felt upon the hearts of his audience. [would you please explain that last part ?]

I walked home with Miss Matilda; but HE DID NOT JOIN US. Matilda was now sadly at a loss for amusement, and woefully in want of a companion: her brothers AT school, her sister married and gone, she too young to be LET / BROUGHT into society; [why do we have a semi-colon here ?] for which, from Rosalie's example, she was in some degree beginning TO acquire A taste --a taste at least FOR THE company of certain classes of gentlemen; [why do we have a semi-colon here ?] at this dull time of year-- no hunting going on, no shooting even --for, AS she COULD not join in that, it was SOMETHING to see her father or the gamekeeper go out with the dogs, and to talk TO them on their return, about the different birds they HAD bagged. Now, also, she was denied the solace THAT the companionship of the coachman, grooms, horses, greyhounds, and pointers COULD / MIGHT HAVE afforded; for her mother having, notwithstanding the disadvantages of a country life, so satisfactorily disposed of her elder daughter, the pride of her heart [do we need a comma here ?] HAD begun seriously to turn her attention to the younger; and, BEING truly alarmed BY the roughness of her manners, and thinking it high time to work a reform, SHE HAD roused at length to exert her authority, and prohibited entirely the yards, stables, kennels, and coach-house. OF course, she was not implicitly obeyed; but, indulgent AS she had hitherto been, when once her spirit was roused, her temper was not AS / SO gentle AS she required that of her governesses to be, and her will was NOT to be thwarted with impunity. After many a scene of contention BETWEEN mother and daughter, many a violent outbreak THAT I was ashamed to witness, in which the father's authority WAS often called in to confirm with oaths and threats the mother's slighted prohibitions --for even HE COULD see that 'Tilly, though she WOULD have made a fine lad, was not quite what a young lady HAD to be'-- Matilda at length found that her easiest plan was to keep clear of the forbidden regions; unless she WOULD* (??) now and then steal A visit without her watchful mother's knowledge.

*Can we use the future or the conditional after "unless"?

I hope that you will be happy with my work this time too. If yes, could I have some more?

Many thanks and best regards,
Hela
Re: Please help with gramma and wording of this letter !

Tess,

I think your letter is very good.
