Therefore I would like to gain a deeper theoretical knowledge in management and practical skills to evaluate public policy in a multicultural context.
Thanks for the compliments. Yes, we are all volunteers. I don't think I want to admit how much time I spend here but for me it is a way to relax. I work for myself from home and I don't have anyone to go and have a coffee break with, so when I want to take a break for ten minutes or so I come over here. It's that or wander away from my office and end up just watching TV for the rest of the day (naughty!). We all come and help out here to varying degrees. Some people can do a lot and others can only help now and then, but it's all appreciated.

We're happy for anyone to have a go at anwering the questions. You'll notice that a lot of the learners will also answer questions and it's a useful exercise for them and it's good that they can help each other. Sometimes we end up with quite a few conflicting answers but eventually it always seems to get sorted out.

Those of us who are regulars or moderators are not all English teachers. In fact I do not know what a couple of the moderators do, we do chat 'back-stage', but not always about our real lives in much detail. However, I believe that one of us is an editor, and I know that two of us are copywriters. It naturally does tend to attract people with a strong interest in language use.

When a really proficient person pops up and starts helping out we all get very excited and we hope they keep visiting regularly. We do our best to encourage these people and keep an eye on them with regards to 'promotions'. As a proficient English user, and editor, you and your 'other perspective' would be very welcome. We certainly wouldn't feel as if you were treading on our toes. We get utterly swamped with posts sometimes and can't answer everybody.

If you really want to make yourself useful, you could look at the letter writing section for us. At this time of year we get many motivation letters to check and it is difficult to keep on top of them all.

Thanks, and welcome to the forum!

please help on my motivation letter for internship

Hello,

I'm writing a motivation letter for internship in USA, since I'm not so well in letter writing, and have a feeling that it misses smth important and

I would like a professional eye to look on it. Other sad thing is the deadline for sending it is this week, so quick, brief or

any comments, suggestions and critics are very welcome. OK, here goes:

--

Vilnius, 9 January 2007

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for participation in [internship program name] in ******, USA.

My name is [name], a flexible and highly motivated student at Vilnius University, Lithuania, currently studying in the second year of a four year bachelor’s degree in computer science.

I was always willing to participate in creating outstanding products that reach professional and home environments worldwide, also giving an enjoyable feeling that I have a part in it. I believe that internship in your company, working in both creative and challenging environment, will provide an opportunity for gaining a valuable experience to build strong foundations for professional programming skills and will acquire new contacts, invaluable for my further career. Further more, working abroad, provides a rare possibility to see things from the outside, from a completely different angle, that I believe, is extremely important in professional and cultural backgrounds.

Personally, I define myself as a dynamic and creative, goal-oriented team player, eager to give the most of myself to achieve the best results possible. Also I am currently working as C/C++ teacher.

I am confident that being familiar with different programming language climates, teamwork and teaching C/C++ experience gives me enough knowledge and I will make me a good candidate for this internship, taking as much as possible from it.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration of my application. I am looking forward to your positive response.

I have read a lot from your forum about motivation letter writing. Here is my ML.

Background:

Application for a summer school & its full scholarship. They provide a limited number of scholarships for talented students, to be given primarily to applicants from countries where local scholarship funds are more limited. Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic, personal and economic factors.

Here is their requirement for ML:

Letter of motivation(mandatory)

Mention if you are applying for a full or a partial scholarship

Please tell us why this course is important for your academic studies or career and why you should receive a scholarship to *** Summer School.

Please tell us the reasons why you need a scholarship for the participation fees, the accommodation cost or both.

The letter should be approximately 1-2 pages in length

If you have elected to register for more than one course, please tell us why you are applying for the additional course. However, it is not possible to take more than one course at the same time.

Dear Scholarship Coordinator:

With this letter, I’d like to express my aspiration for participation in your *** Summer School in *** for this vacation and put forward my application for a full scholarship offered by your esteemed organization.

I graduated in communications science and engineering with honor from *** University in July 2005, and after that I was admitted to pursue my Master’s degree in communications system without exams. Besides my major, I have always kept a keen interest in economics and environment. Though the main subjects in my major are mostly on wireless mobile communications, 3G, WLAN, etc., they can’t be isolated from the outer world; the development of the technologies are interlocked with the growth of the economy and evolution of the environment. So far, I have picked up some knowledge in principles of economics by self-study. However, that’s far from enough. I am really excited to learn about your *** program since I can equip myself with much more solid knowledge concerning environmental management and corporate social responsibility by taking such a course.

During my undergraduate years, I took up part-time jobs in various corporations. Through these experiences, I learn the significance of working environmental management, business sense and different incentives for personnel development. I am highly motivated to study and want to gain the scientific knowledge and practical experience needed to advance the public interest. Your summer school and business, environment and corporate social responsibility course will greatly help me for my future career and broaden my horizons, perfect my world outlook as well. Meanwhile, located in a city of culture and high technology, *** offers excellent facilities for studies; with high-quality instruction in multidisciplinary courses in combination with a good atmosphere, combined with a setting of professors and students from all over the world, I am confident that I will have a pleasant stay as wonderful as it has been for previous participants.

I learned from your homepage of the scholarships offered by your esteemed organization. As I have no other financial source to support my study in ***, I’d like to apply for the full scholarship. According to the criteria list, I believe I would make an ideal candidate. Diligent, confident and optimistic, I have always been an top student in my middle schools (top 2% of 500) and college (top 3% of 73). Since I am looking forward to participating in your *** program very much while lack of financial support, your assistance would be very important to me and your help would be greatly appreciated.

Last week I met with ***, a graduate student who took part in your *** in 2004. He encouraged me to apply for this program joyfully, saying it would bring all-round benefits to me. Thus, I feel more confident that *** is the right choice for me and I would appreciate to receive this precious opportunity to study in ***. Also, it is greatly appreciated if a full scholarship could be offered.

Yours Sincerely,

Yolanda

Would you pls have a look and give me some suggestions if convenient?

I will appreciate your kindness very much.

Sincerely,

I have read a lot of examples together with the comments, as well as the helpful posts of suggestions from MountainHiker. I would like to thank all the members for producing such a great forum. It helped me a lot.

I am now studying in Japan and is going to apply for a job in Switzerland. I have managed to follow the regular suggestions and have modified the letter many times by myself, but since this is my first time to write such a formal letter, I know there is a long way and it needs a lot of modification works. Would you please kindly take a look on my letter and tell me how to improve it?

I am afraid the story is too long, but how to make it looks clear and effective?

Thank you so much in advance.

miaojia

And, here comes the letter:

******************************************************************
Dear Sir or Madam:

I am applying for an entry-level position with your company in Geneva office. The preferred field of employment would be the container transport operation and business management.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in International Shipping Management and a Master’s degree in Transport Planning and Management both from XXX Maritime University, China. Currently, I am a full-time PhD student of XXX University, Japan. My research topics are container transport network analysis and competition strategies. The expected graduation time is October 2005.

After graduating from high school, I was enrolled by my favorite university: XXX Maritime University, which is one of the best maritime universities in China. During the four years study, I acquired wide and solid knowledge of international shipping management, together with firm foundation of mathematics, economies, laws and statistics. In 1999, as a nominated student, I passed the Master’s Entrance Exams with top grades and started my further study in the same university and majored in Transportation Planning and Management. The three years study has widened my knowledge about transportation science, besides, I also involved myself in the practical sector works. From 2000 to 2002, I was the teaching assistance of my professor, my concentration and enthusiasm was highly appreciated by both the professor and the students. Due to my good performance, I was selected as one of the three student participants of a research team and took part in a project on human-resource evaluation supported by China XXX Shipping Company, XXX Branch. My duties included data collection and analysis, preparation of reports and presentations, the coordination work between the company side and our research team. It helped me to develop a strong analytical mind and interpersonal skills. Moreover, I learnt the value of teamwork during the two-month’s project and became more solution-oriented. Furthermore, I found my interest toward real business management was evoked and strongly enhanced.

In my last year at XXX Maritime University, I was assigned the teaching assistant to a Japanese professor due to my excellent English skill and solid knowledge of shipping. He gave us lectures on container transport network analysis and my job was the two-way translation between Chinese and English. It not only enhanced my language skills but also evoked my interest of studying in different nations. After talking with the professor and expressing my desire to do PhD research in Japan, we found that our ideas were very well suited. Hence, he highly encouraged me to apply for the International Doctoral Course of XXX University because it offered exactly the professional courses I was eagerly to learn about, such as: game theory and business application. In October 2002, directly after my graduation from Master’s course, I was selected, out of thousands of candidates all over the world, as one of the 550 selected Japanese government scholarship students. My focus lied on the business strategies and new trend of maritime industry, to be exact, the economic feasibility of mega-container ships as well as the business application of Game Theory.

The first year was, as expected, tough and challenging. I need to adapt to the new life and began the study as soon as possible. Besides, I did not speak Japanese, which simply made the situation more stimulating. I managed to apply my best effort to get through all these successfully even with very little guidance from my professor since he was not in Japan but teaching in World Maritime University until November 2003. I have had benefit from that period of time of how to start a total different life effectively and think more independently. After two and a half years living and studying here, I have been used to the circumstances already and get along very well with my colleagues.

The PhD research has been made considerable advancement during the past two and a half year and so far I have finished most of the work. Beside of daily studies, I actively participate in all kinds of volunteer works and local events also. Inside the campus, I am a lively member to help organize kinds of meetings and events. One specific example of these activities was in 2004, due to my excellent English skill and communication skill, I was assigned to lead a working team organizing the trip and presiding the welcome party when the student-delegation of World Maritime University came to visit my university. While the challenges were great, we are convinced that our team had tried our best and delivered to the guests an impressive party and very exciting trip. Outside of the campus, I also challenged several kinds of part-time jobs to enrich my experiences and get more chances to cooperate with different parties and matters. I benefited a lot from all these jobs and activities. It has helped me to know much more about this country and to discover how the different culture affects the ways in which people react and behave. This, I believe, would help me to respond effectively in an international business environment. Moreover, it strongly enhanced my confidence of living in a foreign country and gave me the full encouragement to chanllenge new targets.

With the solid knowledge and multinational cultural background, I desire to start my career in a global shipping company. I firmly believe that joining XXX Company would be the right choice for me. First of all, my education background makes a perfect fit with the worldwide container transport business that your company is involved. Working with XXX Company, I am going to be able to fully utilize my theoretical knowledge; besides, the company is able to benefit from my Asian culture background, too. Additionally, the fast growth of fleet scale and the incredible expanding of shipping routes network your company has completed in recent years impressed me very much. In the centuries-old shipping industry, XXX, as a relative newcomer, has been able to fully utilize modern information technologies and chosen the optimal approach to make the entire system more efficient. I strongly believe that a company likes this is definitely going to make more significant achievement in the future and I look forward to working and growing with the potential team.

Personally speaking, XXX is the best choice for me is also because of my deep interest in the European culture. Grown up in China and studied in Japan, I am deeply interested in Asian culture, but at the same time, I am also very curious to work in a different culture and in a different language as I am ambitious to learn more everyday.

A copy of my Curriculum Vitae is enclosed which will give you further informations of my studies and other activites. Those are very heplful.Write your own letter with the help of those guidelines then post your letter for help.
Every Motivation letter is different for each person according to their need and qualifications.
I hope my suggestions will be helpful for you.
akb

Re: General accessibility of messages

I have had one such contact, through the direct agency of one of your moderators, who advised an enquirer to visit my website. I have since been able to help that person, and I am grateful to your moderator for his recommendation.

edwy,

I am the moderator who has been directing a few people to your site. When I am unable/unwilling to provide extensive assistance, I have instead directed them to you.

In the two writing sections (writing world, letter writing), you will note that the top two posts (Post 1, Post 2) deal with requesting assistance. In first post, point number 8 directly says that the posts are open to the world. So be careful what you write. The second post discusses more information about motiviation letters.

If a person is unwilling to have their information shared with the world, there is little we can do for him or her on a go forward basis. We rarely respond by personal e-mail. Unlike you with your paid service, we give of our time and efforts freely. Our hope and aim is that by directly helping one person, we indirectly help many. And when a student needs extensive assistance, I either recommend that they contact you or that they seek other assistance.

Some people have written received a lot of assistance with their motivation letters here and others not so. Having our work available for others to view is, in a way, our payment. As mentioned, our goal is to help as many people as possible.

Post 1 in point 8 openly mentions the privacy issue. Moreover, it ought to be obvious that if you write something in an open forum, it is open.

Personally, I would very much dislike to assist others and then have them request that all the information be removed. That is very unfair to those who have assisted because, in effect, we have then provided very personalized assistance without any renumeration.

In most cases, the information contained within a motivation letter is unique to that individual. While there might be some key phrases etc., I suspect not much will be borrowed or lifted directly. But, for other students, they can benefit being seeing the tone and structure of the letter. That, to them, is very beneficial.

Most often universities request that the letters be written by the students themselves. That to me is where the privacy issue comes into play.

I suspect if this student is very concerned with her post being visible to the world at large, we will delete it. (I have to check with the forum owner.) I don't think we want to make someone uncomfortable. But I also think the request is somewhat unfair to those of us who gave of our time freely in the expectation that we would help others.

So are far as the individual is concerned, if she wants further guidance from English Forums in the future with her homework or whatever, she has to recognize that her homework will be available to the world. We want it to be that way. We want to spread our knowledge as far and wide as possible. If she wants private and discreet assistance, she can contact you or others that provide private assistance.

To bring this note to a close, please leave a message in the appropriate forum where her message was written. Address it to MountainHiker and provide the link or message number where her message is written and someone will delete it.

MountainHiker
