(***).
From November/2007 to May/2008 I worked at the *** facilities together with
domain experts to design and build the software system, while maintaining the
research related with my MSc studies at the university.

I believe that through Formal Methods one can achieve true engineering
concepts for software correction by construction, and that, due to the
overwhelming expansion of software applications, not only critical systems
should be proven safe and correct.

Nowadays software is embedded in almost every system we use, and in most
cases,
the producers os these artifacts not only don't provide warranty, but will
relieve themselves from any obligation with disclaimer notices.

Formalizing software development, as other engineering driven development
communities have done in the past, will give it scientific grounds to hold on,
and probably increase its quality.
Kind Regards,

***

Re: Shall I write my name and address at the top right side of my Motivation Letter..?

Hi,

For reasons that escape me, many of our learners here on the Forum seem endlessly fascinated with the idea of writing letters that start with 'To whom it may concern'.

A search will find a great deal of discussion about this, with many people telling them again and again about how rarely and in what special and uncommon circumstances this phrase is used.

Best wishes, Clive

In fact, I would make the salutation To Whom It May Concern

and end it with Sincerely,

But then again, I give a US perspective.

This is a motivation letter for a volunteering organization.I wrote hardly.I aprreciate if you correct and maybe add some words to improve.I am in stuck with what to write about what I will gain as a journalism student for this volunteering.

Thank you in advance
Hi!My name is …, I'm a 26 years old student at 1rd year of Journalism at .. University. When finding out of this kind of volunteering I immediately knew I want to be a part of it. With this letter I would like to apply for the participation as a volunteer in your EVS project and through it I'd like to bring you closer how deeply I would like to become a part of your team and why I think you'd make a great decision choosing me.
You're probably asking yourself why I'm so sure of myself and what is that what I can offer more than someone else? Well...As I already mentioned, being a student of Journalism and on the other this is my second degree.I have studied history for 4 years.history has also always captivated my interest. It is history that made of the world what it is today. The rich Europea history is very fascinating. And there are also many interesting aspects about today’s Europea. I'm a highly motivated, hard-working, tolerant and dynamic individual with expressed comunicating and organisation skills. During my time as a student I gathered a big amount of experinece in working with people in wide range of jobs (being a promotor, hostese, waitresse) I have lived in the UK as au pair for 2 years. In that time ,I have had opportunity to improve my English . I also volunteered as teacher assistance ,I was helping Turkish origin children to learn and improve their TurkishLike you see, I have kept myself busy .Well, doing all that I learned I enjoy working with people and that it fullfills me. And I'm really good at it. I easily adopt in any work enviroment and in working as a part of a group. Although neither an individual work that requires an initiative and responsable person with a sens of personal organisation doesn't represent any problem to me; I act equally good in both surroundings and I cope effectively with all kinds of demands put in front of me.I'm a computer literate and I speak, read and use english and little bit Persian. But I also think that there's a lot more work in front of me to achieve a level of a perfectly spoken Persian. Privately, I like sports and dancing. Depending of my free time and my mood I like cycling, I run. Also I adore to read. it's a daily or weekly press, all sorts of magazines, romans, Internet sites – from yellow pages to scientific articles, arts to love themes – I swallow it all in one breath. Any gatherings or activities of all kinds including people spending time together always will drow my attention. I'm a big filmophile and I enjoy music. And if you add a good cup of coffee with a cake accompanying it, plus my family and friends, with whom I share all my interests and free time, that's my winning choice.I'm sure you have already got an idea of how much I'd like to come and become a player in your team, but all the same, I'll use one more opportunity to express how strongly I desire to volounteer in your EVS project and how I'm convicted I have a lot to contribute with my experience and personality as your team member. The changes and all the adjustements that I would be confronted with do not frighten me, moreover, they challenge me. All potential shortfalls that will occure I'm willing to compensate with my maximum effort and doing my best. I'm very ambitious, prepaired to learn and ready to adopt new skills. I would be very gratefull if you'd give me a chance to represent all my qualities and ambitions in person, working for you. As I already said, this opportunity means to me a lot and represents a big possibility in enriching myself as a person as well as developing myself in professional sense. I thank you for your time spent reading this letter and I hope for a positive response. If you have any questions, please contact me through --- or my perssonal e-mail address ---

My name is Helio; I am 26 years old, and at the moment I am writing my thesis at the University of Málaga. After finishing my thesis, I will hold a master’s degree in “Telecommunication and Software Engineering”. I am a positive and open-minded person who is always looking for new experiences.

In Spain “Telecommunication and Software Engineering” is considered a complete university degree (bachelors and master's). The first four years are common for all engineer students. During this period of time, we learn all the basics of engineering, with a special emphasis on topics related to telecommunications and computer sciences. After those four years, we know the necessary knowledge tools for boarding more complex projects (physics, mathematics, electromagnetic fields, electronic and electrical engineering, signal processing, computer sciences, programming, etc.). The last two years are dedicated to becoming specialized in one or more of the three fields our university offers (computer sciences, electronics, and telecommunications). During this time I had my first contacts with Robotics, and I started learning about cryptography on my own. In time those two fields have become part of my hobbies. So finally I decided to become specialized in electronic and electrical engineering (because many of the lectures related to robotics were part of this specialization), as well as in computer sciences (namely artificial intelligence and computer-human interfaces). My interest in cryptography became the catalyst for doing what I always wanted: researching. I decided to write my thesis about a self-project of cryptographic algorithms. As a partial result of the studies done for my thesis, last summer I presented a conference paper at the “National Symposium for Telecommunications, Canary Islands”. Another of my papers will be published in the “Journal of Computer Science, New York”.

Over the last six months I have been involved in a project of computer-human interfaces based on the human language. Although we are now more focused on studying some of the basic problems under the natural language processing, due to my experience with robotics and computer sciences, I have a solid background in AI.

Languages and cultures have been a big part of my life. As I remember, I have always spent my free time in summer camps, exchange programmes, and language courses, or just travelling around. I believe that living in Kyoto for one year will give me the opportunity to deepen this experience. Japan is the paradigm of an innovator society. R&D departments from Japanese companies are constantly leading the revolution of technology. For me, being able to learn directly from a researching team in one of the leading companies of the world is an amazing challenge and a great source of knowledge. I consider myself a hard worker and a conscientious student who knows what it means for his personal and professional development. Having the opportunity to apply for a researching traineeship at *** under the *** programme is already an honour; having a chance to be a member of your team is a dream.

I'm writing this letter to show my desire to apply for the master program at the *** University for the 2008- 2009 study year about *** European Studies. In the following letter I would like to present my reasons for choosing this program and to provide a general background about me.

First of all I would like to introduce myself. My name is *** *** and I am from Cyprus. As you know Cyprus is the last divided country in Europe for many decades. I live in Northern part of the island, which is not legally recognizd country. I have lived and studied in Cyprus until I graduated from Famagusta Maarif College, than I start studying in Ä°stanbul, Marmara Univeristy about Economics.

My major is Economics however I have studied some lectures related on Europen Union Studies and I give special importance on Europe, I have studied one year in Lithuania, Vilnius as an erasmus student. From that time, I interested more in European Studies, European Politics and it's relations.

During my bachelor studies I was also the member of Cyprus Youth Platform, which is the largest student association targeting TurkishCypriot students who are studying abroad. Currently I am the President of Cyprus Youth Platform, which is located in Turkey, England, Germany, USA and have representatives in Canada, France, Ukrain and Netherlands. Currently under the name of Cyprus Youth Platform, I have joined many conferences about Europe and Euro-Med region, create many projects which are funded by United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and European Union. Projects mostly aimed on Unification of the island, Re-approachment between TurkishCypriots and GreekCypriots, approachment of TurkishCypriots to European Union and increasing their integration with Europe, Rehabilating Cypriots with peace culture. Out of this “macro aspects” Cyprus Youth Platform aim to develop solutions to students and youth problems, increasing awareness, socialization and preventing degeneration of youth, fighting with drug addiction, sexual harrashment.

The main reason why I am applying this program is that out of pratically, I want to improve myself in theoretically about Europe. After finishing succsessfully this program I would like to create benefits for Cyprus. For this prospect living and studying in *** will give me high opportunites. I found that with high number of foreign students, unique character of the program and its multidisciplinary approach, combining political science, history, international relations, culture and economics *** University is the best place to mastering about European Studies. Especially with the possibility to choose different study tracks, either specialising in ‘European international politics’ or in ‘European politics and administration’ make this program is the best for my future prospects.

Finally, I think *** University is an excellent place to start my career and the program seems like the perfect opportunity for me to meet other cultures, learn another language and experience European education system as well as gain more independence.

Please find enclosed my curriculum vitae, certificate and my degrees/ diplomas with marks, inquires, references as per the requirements of application. Kindly contact me if you require any further details or documents. I hope to hear from you in the near future.

Great motivation letter, it`s good, just correct the misspellings that is typed in yellow :)

Good Luck

I would appreciate if you take a look at my reference letter

Hello !
I am new to this forum and I have discovered it when I was looking for formal letter samples. I want to apply to a College in Denmark and I want to have a chance to be chosen, so I am requiring help from anyone that is kind enough to offer it. I would also like to use the experience of interacting with the users of this forum to get prepared for the English test (sort of TOEFL, but not exactly) that I am required to pass for that College.
This is my letter of reference that I wrote for my teacher to sign. (I know this practice isn't the right way, but my teacher was very busy, so he asked me to do so). I would appreciate if you could have a look at it and spot mistakes and unusual phrases, if there are any.

i have replaced - [me] = my name

<strike>begin</strike>

To Whom it May Concern,

I am writing this letter as a recommendation for [me], a student at “[my school]” National College, in the quality of Teacher and Class Master at “[my school]” National College.

I have known [me] for almost four years, and in this time he has proven to be an extremely valuable student, with a great potential for learning, surpassing many other students.

In my opinion, during the time I spent with [me] in class, I can say I got to know him quite well. He has proven to me that he has an ample knowledge in the field of technology, being capable of operating a PC and virtually any software and device. The student [me] is, without doubt, one of the most valuable students to whom I teach. He has participated in programming school contests, as well as other contests, like Kangourou European Contest of Applied Mathematics in 2007 and the Siemens Join Multimedia design contest, in 2006.

As far as I can say, he is a very conscious student, one of his greatest qualities is the ability to associate and use new information, so that he finds it very easy to understand a bigger concept and get the essential picture. Moreover, I have noticed that [me] progressed since I had first met him, in the way that now he is more mature, more capable of making right decisions. He has now reached a high level of intelligence and awareness and I can fully state that he is ready to meet the intellectual requirements that are demanded by a college course.

[me] is a talented person, and very passionate when it comes to his ambitions. In a conversation we had a little time ago, I had learned that he is inclined toward computer designing, especially web sites. He had told me that he was studying diverse designing techniques and programming languages at home, so that one day he could be prepared for a job as a web designer.

However, despite the fact that [me] has focused on the field of technology and computers, he has a vast general knowledge and he is aware that by also studying other fields he could solve problems that are related to his choice field. He is a sociable person that accommodates in a group rather quickly, being able to handle teamwork efficiently. He knows when to listen and how, and he adapts his ideas to fit the project he is working on, therefore proving to be extremely flexible.

All things considered, I strongly believe that [me] is the right choice for the Multimedia Design and Communication courses within the [my choice] College. His redoubtable qualities and abilities, along with his great potential render [me] able to respond to elevated academic standards and even to outperform them, in order to pursue his career prospects. I am utterly convinced that this student could be a valuable addition to a prestigious academic center, such as your college.

Yours Faithfully,

<strike>end</strike>

Thank you for your time.
p.s. I will also post my motivation letter as soon as it's finished.

** Comments on Motivation Letter asked **

Dear members,

I am a Dutch scholar in my exam year of grammar school. Upcoming Friday I need to have sent in all my application papers for university. I saw the excellent help offered by all of you to correct motivation letters and give advise. I just finished my motivation letter and I would like some comments on it. I am applying for a university which is very selective. It is an international orientated institute and offers broad education (I want to study litarature, political theory, business and maybe some law) It is very intensive studying and I will be living on campus if everything turns out oké and I will be accepted. But... only one out of five scholars get the chance to be accepted. So I can use all help offered by getting the best motivation letter ever. The yellow gaps represent fitting words I did not just come up. (sorry for some Dutch but thats for translation)

One special thing: I find it quite difficult to limit myself to two pages so if you have any advise on what to delete in this text it would be great (it is too long)

My motivation letter:

Dear Sir/Madame,

Hereby I am applying for a place in the liberal arts programme at University College Utrecht for fall 2008, and in this letter I will elaborate on the reasons of my motivation and why I am perfectly fit for the concept.

My name is Claire. I am a sixth form student at the Koningin Wilhelmina College in Culemborg, I will be graduating from grammar school (Dutch: gymnasium) in June 2008.

I must say I like all my subjects and in particular English and Social Studies. I started learning English from a young age and it has always felt like my second language. Sometimes I feel I can express myself better in English than in Dutch, or at least more beautifully.

I enjoyed the fact that my (former) secondary school is rather innovative. In 2006 Bizzgames was introduced; a simulation of a business environment. This is an excellent way of putting management and organisation skills into practice. Consequence was I came in first as a two-person team with a student I did not know. On the one hand working after school did result in less active extracurricular activities, on the other hand I did learn to …

I know people see me as an open-minded, ambitious, passionate and hardworking student. Academically I am a critical thinker. I am almost always passionately interested in a subject Travelling is one of my enduring passions. It gives me an indescribable feeling boundlessness.

From my point of view current students are definitely well educated; however we are also quite restrained by the borders of Europe. I think this attitude will no longer serve. We are naturally ignorant of … I, on the contrary, am very driven and interested in breaking through this boundary. From these I want to get good the elements. I am eager to develop. I find it interesting to put economic/political problems into the pillory. I can be quite taken up by thinking of a balanced policy.

Having experienced the concept of liberal arts and science in 2006 my conviction to apply for University College has grown stronger as time passed. The completed Roosevelt Junior Academy days (see enclosed certificate) and the open day visited at University College Utrecht have only served as reinforcements. I am appealed by UC’s curriculum, campus, professors, students, students associations and ambiance. I felt at home immediately with the campus and I felt a connection with the students I spoke to. I want more than offered by general universities. General universities do not strive to exploit ones individual academic abilities and they do not offer academic excellence. I want to be challenged. My future prospects are at the limit of what I want to consider reachable by own means, and no less. This is because I know I will do the best I possibly can and therefore I identify my future with endless possibilities.

In summer 2007 I took an educational travel to Cambridge. I stayed in a host family, for the reason I wanted to experience British living closely. It gave me renewed my energy to focus on what I want to achieve and therefore made me so much stronger and more motivated. For me this was a very special/changing experience. I finished with the intensive English course, specialized in Academic English at Advanced level. My English has improved … in England. My environment had continuingly existed of a very rich diversity of cultures, which I experienced as very inspiring. I think it takes quite some adaptability to get settled in a totally new country and culture, and I think this is a very important talent to posses. I can easily find a way and socialize in unfamiliar surroundings.

In my exam year an opportunity occurred. I was selected for the School of Economics programme. I signed up and I intensely wanted to participate, for several of it’s aspects appealed to me; the academic education, the English language in studying and specialising in one of my most favourable subjects. This rather demanding extracurricular activity I enjoyed fullest, I am convinced studying in English will increase my satisfaction of studying and turning to English education will cause least trouble. I wanted more of my education and this challenged me.

Furthermore I arranged I will not be making a general PWS, but to complete this in a more academic, specialized and scientific way at School of Economics (Utrecht University) in the British language.

I put a lot of energy and satisfaction into the art of debating. When I was fifteen, I joined the students association Utrecht Debating Society. Speaking in public now represents one of my skills. As a scholar I had to catch up the gap between me and the student members. This only stimulated my ability in learning faster. Besides regular debating I am very interested in performing eloquentia en I’m considering making that one of my extracurricular activities in the future. I have also been a co-judge at the NK debating tournament 2007 in Tilburg. In my leisure time I like to … in the ancient theory of pleading, especially to read the great works of Cicero, Socrates and Plato.

I am already making efforts to make arrangements to go abroad upcoming summer. My aunt and uncle are very active in Africa concerning charity and voluntary activities, with this connection I hope it is possible to obtain a safe and valuable place to analyze and learn about unbalanced political/economical systems, and experience helping people for whom I think I can contribute to transfer knowledge to people unable to get education. There are still two sides of the badge, because I think such an experience enriches me as a human being. I also like to analyze the as it seems bottomless situation.

I have a broad range of interests and I have quite a few requirements fit for a study to my personal wishes. My contribution to University College Utrecht would be valuable, if given the opportunity. One of the reasons I am so passionately firm about studying liberal arts and sciences is the great international orientation. I would be honoured to join/strengthen the Future Leaders Project. The living environment of a large diversity of cultures does seem only tremendously inspiring to me. Considering UCU students make use of … a lot, my debating skills will definitely be an advantage for me and liveliness in class. My active class-participation will be a mentionable contribution. I would also like to be actively involved in several committees at University College Utrecht. In my high school there was no occasion to have been involved in MUN, Model United Nations. Since I’m aware of the MUN at university level is offered at University College Utrecht I’m determined to become member of this organisation.

UCU could give me the possibility to fulfil my academic needs, such as Future Leaders Project and an MUN-foundation. It will also shape me exactly fit for my future plans.

I think it is a huge pré for a student ambitioning an academic international carreer to be all-round. UCU is able to offer, in my opinion, optimal “vorming”. Highly academic skills, an intensive network with motivated people all over the world, an international “blik”, broad but good knowledge and ability to speak English almost as a native speaker.

During my high school I have personally been through a hard time regarding my domestic situation and I have no doubt this had also restrained me in performing to my fullest academic capability. Especially in de 4th and 5th class I was most affected by this, and therefore my exam grades averages started at a lower rank. It took me a while to be able to remain least affected by this negativity with help from a psychologist. I managed to get my grades up with hard work and high grades, but considering my own personal capability this could’ve been a lot more and will be at University College Utrecht. I think it did make me a lot stronger as an individual. In my opinion a human must strive to take advantage of every event.

Enclosed you will find a form of recommendation from Dr. Verbraak and Dr. Filius. Mr Verbraak is my teacher of management and organisation. Mr. Verbraak knows me well as a student and as an individual. Mr Filius has been my mentor in the sixth class and has been most aware of my personal circumstances. Mr Visschers has been my English teacher for several years and is well aware of my English level of proficiency, enclosed you find his comments on this matter.

Finally, I consider myself a suitable candidate for this program. In my time at KWC I have really showed my motivation, both academically and socially. I hope that I have convinced you of my motivation and that you will grant me this opportunity.

Yours faithfully,
Claire Wientjes
