Good questions. I'm probably too tired to answer them well. I may mix them all together in a salad.

In the physical world, I think of an insert as something designed for easy removal and reinsertion or replacement   -   such as a bushing, which is a very unsophisticated bearing.  Such things are usually intended to impart strength. The bushing's strength would be provided against wear, or abrasion. In my earlier post I was thinking of the reinforcement of a seam as providing tensile strength, or strength against being pulled apart.  In many such cases, stiffness would be an unwanted byproduct.

The addition of a stiffer "reinforcing" fabric in areas where stiffness is desired (as in your coat example with the red markings) would impart a different kind of strength. Let's call it "rigidity." Seams may or may not be involved in these areas. Such added fabric would not be removable, and therefore wouldn't be called "an insert." (I suppose that's arguable. One may insert an extra line into a poem, and just leave it there, but in my experience, an insert may be removed     -     but then, I've never been employed as a seemstress.

The reinforcing, insertable bones in my mother's corset and the collar of my dress shirt could well be described and classified as reinforcement. They may also be described as objects. It's possible to describe them as "material(s)," but that's sort of a grey area.

Padding, on the other hand, is often designed to be removable, but I'd describe it as "form enhancement" rather than "reinforcement," in agreement with what you said above.

Regarding my parenthetical addition of "in time," it was an afterthought. "To go way back" is something of a fixed expression. Two old friends may say, "We go way back," suggesting that their friendship dates from an earlier era. I thought you might be unfamiliar with the expression, and since I was speaking of insertables, I was afraid you might think I meant they went way (deep) back into the collar    -    back in space, not back in time. It was parenthetical by way of clarifying the expression.

Regarding my apostrophe in "the 30's," I prefer to use it when the number is not written out as a "word." Don't you think he makes his 7's funny? It's not a possessive, just a plural.

"These were removable (my mother's girdle bones) as are the shirt collar ones" equals "as are the ones in the shirt collar(s)." I guess I'm using "shirt collar" as a compound adjective. Is that permissible? I believe your suggested substitution presents a "parallel structure" problem. Yes, my mother's girdle was removable, thank God, but I was speaking of the bones ("these").

I'm trying to remember how I went astray here. I'll just blame it on the Oops, which was going through a period of hyperactivity about then.

The sound of "import food(s)" bothered me from the beginning, but I knew I'd heard it a lot, and it seems like a good candidate for a compound noun. I should have pursued that issue first. There are many internet references to "import food safety," "government import food regulation number 1234 etc.," "Mrs. So-&-So's Import Food Mart," etc.

How do we know when these expressions rise to the level of legitimate compound nouns?

Anyway, I finally decided it was all a mistake. It looks like I copied from A.Stars, but I didn't see her post til afterward because of the Oops activity. How embarrassing! Sorry.

Hi, I would really appreciate anyone who could check over these sentences to ensure all the punctuation is correct. This is an assignment for a correspondence course I'm taking, and I think I have them mostly right but I'd like to be sure. (This lesson focuses mainly on the period, question mark, exclamation mark, comma, semicolon, colon, dash, apostrophe, hyphen, quotation marks, italics/underlining, parantheses, brackets, slashes, capital letters, numbers)

a) Her favourite writers, Joyce Caol Oates and James Dickey, are both contemporary.

b) Your faults are an uncontrollable temper, inexperience, and indifference to your

work. (should there be a colon after the word are?)

c) Since we had driven the car 87,000 kilometres, we decided to turn it in.

d) If siege is spelled with an ie, why is seize spelled with an ei?

for doing a great job at Food Drive. This year we

told us they couldn't have done it without us. They sure got that right. :)

Dates to remember/Announcements:

November Pack Meeting/Pinewood Derby will be on Tues. Nov. 18. Please go to ***'s for weigh-in anytime between 6:00pm and 8:00pm the day before (Monday). Note that the car should weigh no more than 5 oz.
There will be a den meeting on Nov. 24 @ ***. We'll be doing a community service by raking leaves and fulfill a requirement in "***". Location for the service to be determined.
Unless noted otherwise, there will be 3 meetings in December: Dec. 1st, Dec. 8th and Dec. 15th. We will focuse our meetings on spreading love in our community. Specific activities will be announced. Relevant achievements in the Wolf Handbook are # 11b, 11c, and 11d.

This week in den meeting we completed Ach. #6b and 6c. Job-well-done to those who did the presentation on his collection, I was impressed! And if you forgot to bring your collection, please do it at home with your parents so they can check you off. Also complete 6a that's to be done with your family. (Note: the first part (requirement A) of Achievements 6-12 is always done at home, please treat it like scouts' homework in conjuction to what's been done in den meetings.)

As you know, I have asked to keep the scouts' handbooks for a few days to assess individual scout's progress and determine whether furthur efforts are required to bring it up to speed. According to the cub scout's program, there are basic guidelines for advancement, called the "Wolf Trail", to help scouts move to the next level of scouting, Bears.

The Wolf Trail consists of 12 Achievements under which there are different numbers of "requirements" lettered a, b, c...and so on. For any 3 achievements completed, the scout is awarded one yellow bead. Therefore a scout will have earned 4 yellow bead by his next birthday in order to obtain a Wolf badge to advance with honor to Bears. Idealy if a scout focuses one achievement a month, which is plausible, his advancement should be secured by his next birthday. Based on this rough measurement, each scout should have a different number of achievements to have been completed as of now depending on the month he was born in. By quantifying the progress, I think it's easier to see where the scout is at in terms of his progress and how much more effort, if any, is needed to help him move up to Bears.

Scouting is a concerted effort between the scout/his family and his leader, I would do my best to help your son achieve his goal. Here are the achievements your son has done and suggestions that can be considered:

To my everlasting shame, I've unfairly maligned our site. My humble apologies to Hitch et al. I simply need to spend more time keeping up with the changes. My bad.

New2, you've always been better at this than I am, so I'm sure you've already figured it out. On the home page, and also on the Forums main page, above all the handsome pictures, click on the legend "Most Active Users," and you'll get a page with pictures of everybody. You can "uncheck" users with pictures only, and get the shadow people also mixed in. Then you can click on those to go to the profiles.

Or, as I said earlier, you can use the site search engine and type in the member's name, if you happen to remember it.

I do persist in bemoaning the loss of the old postings list, however.
