This is how the registration form asks for it:

Normal 0 21 false false false ES X-NONE X-NONE Please write a motivation statement in the box below. This should not exceed 2 pages. Please include why you are applying for admission to the MSc Computational Mechanics programme, explain your reasons for undertaking graduate work, as well as an explanation of your academic interests, including their relation to your undergraduate study, life and professional goals.

Please note that as lenghty as it looks it doesn't go over 2 pages, with a size 11 typeset.

What do you think of it? Please feel free to point anything out.

Motivation statement:

Normal 0 21 false false false ES X-NONE X-NONE
In the year 2006, a new career path opened for me. I took a three-day course in 3D CAD modeling. The subject wasn’t covered in the mechanical engineering programme of my University, at least not at the time, and I didn’t have any idea of the development, use and opportunities in computational methods for a mechanical engineer. More than just focusing on developing one skill, it piqued my curiosity into computational mechanics, drove me to investigate about it, and after the course was over, I continued my training by using tutorials provided by the software developer itself. I didn’t know it by then, but this small course had a big impact on the career decisions I was about to make.

After taking the advanced course in CAD modeling, I had already decided I would specialize in this subject as much as possible; even though it wasn’t a requisite, I used CAD modeling for design-driven projects and assignments during my undergraduate studies. It sped up the process of creating drawings and graphical representations. For some, the time spent on tutorials and problem solving within the software was a waste of time; it was a great opportunity for me, since I was already thinking of the skills I needed to develop to work on this field.

On the same year, I attended a lecture on a research done on the Faculty’s Energy Department. It featured a CFD analysis of a can combustor. Using computational methods for this kind of analysis involving fluid flow and heat transfer was a novel idea for me, and I took note of the lecturer’s final words: “If you are interested in research involving CFD, just look for us in the Energy Department.”; little did I know he would be the tutor for my upcoming thesis.

Nevertheless, I did not take action immediately after this lecture. It was only around June 2007, when I was presented with an opportunity for developing a thesis project on the design of a sand mixer for a foundry. There was funding, the design was rather simple, and I would work in the project with my best friend. That’s when I remembered the lecture, and how there was a chance to work in this subject. I headed to the Faculty’s Energy Department, and asked for a thesis assignment. That was when I started working on the CFD simulation of a cooling tower, and declined the offer of the sand mixer design. Besides showing my background, this sheds some light on how far I will go to stand by my goals and long-term decisions.

My internship was on PDV, Venezuela’s Largest oil company; Sadly, it was unrelated to my field and I worked in the maintenance department of an Oil field in another city. Even still, I had a good performance, and I found out there were opportunities for me to work on a thesis project, which would surely end up in a job placement; By that time my thesis with the Energy Department was already approved and the Cooling tower geometry and mesh was almost done. Then again, I chose to stick to my goals. I still believe it was the best decision.

During my project I spent a lot of time reading scientific papers, Literature and tutorials on the CFD code used by the department (ANSYS CFX) and talking to Post-grade students and teachers. It was then I decided I would pursue a career on Computational Fluid Dynamics and computational mechanics in general by starting a post-graduate course as soon as I obtained my first degree.

This Erasmus Course opens up a lot of doors for me. After if obtain this Master degree, I plan to engage in research by applying for a PhD studentship right away; Swansea University has some research on Fluid-Structure Integration modeling (FSI), which is one of the non-compulsory courses I plan to take if I receive the scholarship. Since this course and my choice of institutions are not focused only in Fluid Dynamics, but has structural / material mechanics as well, it gives students a great knowledge base for engaging in research for this topic. The UPC University in Barcelona also has a doctoral degree in thermal engineering that covers many subjects of my interest. There are also more choices, such as Cranfield’s PhD studentship in CFD for Compressible Flows. It might be hasteful to list some examples of topics I would be interested for a doctoral degree, but I like to be systematical and plan things ahead. I even have plans for what kind of short or post grade courses part-time I could take after I have obtained my doctoral degree.

I’m interested in getting work experience in this field, and developing team-work and communication skills; this will be probably until I can obtain funds to take on a Doctoral degree course, or after it. That influences my choice, because CIMNE’S Computational Mechanics course with the Erasmus Scholarship might be the best preparation I could get in the world for working in this field at the moment; The Erasmus Programmes are recognized worldwide, and so is the quality of the Universities involved in them.

To summarize, I can state that I am sure of how much I want to pursue this career, and this Erasmus Course is a great start. The subjects are challenging, but that is the same way I felt about my thesis project at the beginning. I am also aware of the competition for obtaining the Erasmus scholarship is fierce, but I believe my background, experience with Computational Mechanics and CFD software goals, preparation and motivation are more than enough for applying.

... And that's it. I was thinking of basiclly slaugther that paragraph about my internship... what do you think? Thanks in advance, guys.

Re: “There is always a toast” or “there was always a toast”?

Hi,

There is a passage in my English textbook. In this passage there are two sentences with the simple present tense, in which I think the simple past tense should be used, and they are the following:

1. “there is always a toast”

2. “Many parties, social and political discussions and family gatherings take place here”

In order to show the context of the two sentences, the whole passage has been copied below with the two sentences in question italicized (the two sentences are also in bold type together with the title of the passage)

A Russian Experience

It was almost midnight, yet the streets were bathed in a soft, shimmering light. The sun had just gone down and twilight would soon give way to night. We were strolling along the Nevsky Prospekt, a wide avenue stretching four kilometres and filled with people, music and street entertainers. This was St Petersburg in August and it seemed the city was out to celebrate the long summer nights. We had just left the home of newly found Russian friends and after a wonderful traditional dinner decided to have some exercise before going to bed.

It has always been my dream to visit St Petersburg. Absorbed by Russian history since childhood, I wanted to see it all for myself. Now, thanks to Perestroika, tourists are welcomed into Russia and St Petersburg with its rich, cultural history is a popular choice.

We flew in from Stockholm and from the air immediately noticed a well-planned city with apartment blocks built in semi-circles with central courtyards and gardens. Not only did this seem practical, but the idea behind the design was to shelter residents from the fierce winter winds. The city was built by European architects in the 18th and 19th centuries and remains one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Straddling the wide River Neva, the city is made up of almost 50 islands connected by some 310 bridges. No wonder the sight of elegant buildings along the canals reminded me of Paris, Amsterdam and Venice.

I hadn't met many Russian people but I had an intense love for their country and traditions and was passionate about art and literature. Russian writers such as Pushkin, Tolstoy, and Dostoevsky reach the very soul of ordinary Russians, and this I find intriguing. It was no different when I finally found myself in Russia. People were openly friendly and eager to discuss any aspect of their lives in their beloved Motherland. No matter how bad the economy, somehow these people have the ability to see the positive aspects of their lives, whatever their circumstances. We met an attractive woman from Moscow, and we fast became friends and it was she who invited us into the home of some dear friends of hers.

The apartment block was in an elegant area of St Petersburg and was probably a palace in the past but now converted into apartments of four floors. The entrance through a narrow hallway was dark and dull and there was an old fashioned lift on the ground floor with steel folding gates that clanged shut, after which the lift moved very slowly upwards. It was quicker to walk up the staircase.

Our host, Yuri Petrochenkov, himself an artist, warmly greeted us at the door. He was tall with gray hair pulled into a tail. His open, friendly manner and twinkling eyes showed a sense of humor and his English with a thick accent made him an entertaining host. Nelly, his wife, spoke little English but understood a great deal more.
We were ushered into their main room, which served as a living-room, dining room and TV area. There was an air of intimacy in the room, as though it was the core part of this family. Many parties, social and political discussions and family gatherings take place here. They did, and they still do. The present tense suggests that this visit was not long ago, and that the same custom of toasts exists 'today', ie at the time of writing. We were honored to be there and I felt ashamed that I had absolutely no Russian language to attempt to communicate in. Why is it that people of the English-speaking world take for granted that the rest of the world should speak English? I had always meant to learn Russian and had enrolled for courses in the past but they never started because of lack of numbers.

Our meal was a feast in itself. We weren't offered wine, just vodka in little shot glasses and before drinking there is always a toast. Here, it seems to be a similar idea to the above, but I'd prefer the simple past here myself. Another interpretation is that the writer is trying to make the reader feel that he is present at the meal, but in that case I'd use present tense for the whole sentence, and maybe even the whole paragraph or the whole narrative. Some nine vodkas later, Yuri was in fine form and had found a drinking partner in my husband!

Wandering along the river, we agreed that not only had we found new friends, but we had just spent probably the most enjoyable experience of our trip to Russia. This is what travel is all about - to get to the heart and soul of the people and to try to understand and experience a little of what makes others tick

Best wishes, Clive

how to do with these words?

Hello guys,

Please help me to fill the passage with right word.

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4
Q- Complete the paragraph by choosing words from the list given. 10

commit, penalties, further, misdoing, occur, protests, enlist, injustices, forced, tragedy.

Those examples of poetic justice that----------in medieval and Elizabethan literature, and that seem so satisfying, have encouraged a whole school of twentieth-century scholars to “find”-- examples. In fact, these scholars have merely-- victimized characters into a moral framework by which the injustices inflicted on them are, somehow or other, justified. Such scholars deny that the sufferers in a ---- are innocent; they blame the victims themselves for their tragic fates. Any -- is enough to subject a character to critical whips.

Yet it should be remembered that the Renaissance writer Matteo Bandello strongly ------- the injustice of the severe ------- issued to women for acts of disobedience that men could, and did, ----- with virtual impunity. I have written this to the best of my ability. I'm pretty secure about the language part, as I'm bilingual, but it's the culture part that I want to check works. Some stuff I need to put in there, like the reason for the GPA - it's part letter, part appeal. But, this is my question, does it come off as too smarmy, too corny, too vague, disorganized, paragraphs need switching around? I just really liked what Hiker said to some other people n here - I have tried to follow the question checklists s/he posted

"(Introduction (very quick points)

This is an online... ookay, off to edit *edits* *returns* ...online college offering a Liberal Arts MA. Fort Hays State University.

And this is my letter:

As an immigrant from Egypt with a BA in English literature, including comparative and cultural studies, a background in consciousness-raising work and gender activism, and a lifelong dream of a career conveying these concepts to others and inspiring them to make a difference, I respectfully seek acceptance at your Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program.

Culture, critical thinking, history, and social analysis have been the most important fields of study (formal and otherwise) in my life for as long as I can remember. My mission since graduation has been to analyze and question accepted ways of doing things, including sexuality, the monolithic nature of official discourse, and the mainstreaming of the Arabic language and Islam while eroding indigenous tongues and other religions in my native Egypt. As an aficionado of historical narrative, especially that of my native region, the Middle East, and a keen observer of the unseen social currents of religious and gender politics, and cultural norms, mores and values, I have devoted myself to exploring what lies beneath the surface and is visible through the 'iceberg' model of culture. To this end, I have read over 150 books on history, culture, religion, politics and sexuality, among others, mostly about Arab culture. I already am teaching Middle Eastern culture and history at a small language school. The reaction I have received has made me eager to become qualified for a better teaching position in the field of culture/comparative studies. There is so much work to be done in this area to make people truly aware! However, I sense that before being qualified to do this, I am in need of a more thorough academic grounding in epistemology, anthropology and the science of critical thinking skills, as well as in the broader areas of culture and human knowledge, including cross-disciplinary studies and research on cultures outside the mainstream. I am confident that these fields are jut what I need to formalize the learning imparted by my sometimes tumultuous social-political personal experience.

While the English Department of Cairo University, where I earned my BA, was a liberal oasis (my majors included Comparative Literature, Civilization and feminist criticism), I later found many of my fellow-Arabs were resistant to a liberal outlook. At that time, the newspapers were abuzz with news of the 'Satanist cult': trumped-up charges (later dismissed by judges as a total fabrication) brought by powerful police officials against American University boys and girls, arrested for wearing black and listening to heavy metal, tortured into confessing crimes they never committed. I became more and more frustrated as people kept telling me, "The newspapers say it; it must be true." For these people, the appearance of difference, and condemnation by the mainstream media, was enough to condemn these unfortunate young people whose only crime had been to assert some individuality and deviate from social norms.

The issue became even more complicated and interesting when a number of Europeans I worked with, in a well-intentioned quest for 'cultural sensitivity', ended up with a prescriptive and restrictive definition of Middle Eastern culture: "No, no, boys shouldn't take Home Economics classes. We understand your culture." I preferred to view norms, mores, and values as separate entities and not succumb to the Orientalist view that, lumped together, unchanging and unchangeable, they constituted a monolithic 'culture'. Some of the other questions I asked myself were: What is collective memory? Can one find a descriptive, rather than prescriptive, model of culture? How far does respect for difference erode the rights of the dissenting individual in a collective culture? These are questions whose answers I hope to seek in your program.

In 2001, my interest in sexual/religious difference took on a more overtly political nature with the Queen Boat case, where 52 gay men were arrested on trumped-up charges of, yes, Satanism. Unable to stand it any longer, I started a campaign to pressure legal organizations to give them representation in court ("But they're fags! Why represent them?") and alert international human rights organizations to the issue. This had some success; however, it became clear that I was next in line for arrest, and finally I sought political asylum in the U.S. Since coming here, I have studied cinema (earning an associate degree with a 3.8 GPA) made a film on the subject, and am currently preparing a documentary on the veil.

In addition to your academic program, which seems to offer a roadmap to the answers for many of my questions, your university is ideal for me in that you offer a course to be taken completely online. This is beyond convenient for me, as I am busy with work and have found that commuting time cuts into my study hours; I would also find it impossible to relocate to Kansas at this time. Also, in an age where education can be, literally, a forbidding expense, my gratitude knows no bounds for your efforts to provide a quality education at a price I can actually afford.

I feel it is pertinent here to mention that, just before the exams of my last year at university, I was among a group of students who were holding a peaceful demonstration against the interference of the secret police in student affairs, including sabotaging student union elections. The secret police pelted us with tear gas grenades and rubber bullets; I was unlucky, and had to be carried out of the university with a broken nose and upper respiratory inflammation. When exam time came round, I was not yet recovered (Egyptian universities base the entire grade on one final exam, not on coursework) but made an effort to come to exams and ultimately managed to pass all my tests. However, while my GPA in previous years was significantly higher, as you can see from my transcript, I was unable to make the minimum 2.5 GPA required for the last 60 hours of undergraduate study. This rather lengthy and tedious explanation precedes, as you may be expecting, an urgent and very heartfelt plea that you not allow this unfortunate occurrence to stand in the way of my chances for learning and the ultimate fulfillment of my life's dream.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Your university represents a dream to me, not least thanks to the convenience and cost, which means that the dream is finally within my grasp. It is my dearest hope to become a student at the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program, thereby gaining an invaluable academic grounding and ideological framework and positively influencing others thereby. If accepted, I pledge to apply myself to my studies diligently, and never give you cause to doubt the wisdom if your decision.

Allow me to thank you, again, for considering my application.

Yours sincerely

Help Proof Research Paper (MLA Help Too)

Hello everyone, nice forum you have here. I have a research paper due tomorrow and I have always had problems with punctuation and mechanics.

I was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to proofread it. Also, I have a works cited list, but I dont know where exactly to put the citations if multiple paragraphs are from the same source. Anywways, heres the paper:

Writing is known to be a very therapeutic process and many authors have utilized this quality throughout history. When writing reflects the authors’ thoughts and experiences, the work becomes all the more meaningful and realistic. This brings about a quality that many people can relate to. Death, sadness, the desire to escape real life and, and hard times in general are recurring themes in literature. Themes such as this, although depressing, make up the basis of some of the best writing today.
These motifs make up the mold for the works of Tennessee Williams and Kate Chopin. Tennessee Williams is best known for two of his plays, The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire. Both plays are heavily, heavily influenced by the tragic events of his life. Kate Chopin grew up in the Creoles of Louisiana, which had a lot of influence on her writing. Her most famous work, The Awakening, was banned for a few decades due to controversial content. She is also known for her short stories, Desiree’s Baby, The Storm, and The Story of an Hour.

In order to understand the meanings behind the words, it is necessary to first understand how these authors grew up. Without background knowledge, it would be hard for one to understand the times and troubles that the authors went through. Without knowing anything about their lives, it is not possible to make even educated guesses as to the meanings.

Kate Chopin was born February 8th, 1850 as Katherine O'Flaherty. Having grown up in Louisiana, she is considered one of the southern forerunners for feminism in the 20th century. Much of her work was based around her life's events.

Thomas O’Flaherty, her father, was a founder of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. When Kate was five years old, Thomas was one of twenty nine people who died in a bridge collapse over the Gasconade River. That same year, she entered into the Sacred Heart Academy in St. Louis. She ended up being very close to her mother and great grand-mother. In 1962, tragedy struck. Her brother George, a confederate soldier, died as a prisoner of war, and her great grand-mother passed away of old age. Following these deaths, Kate left Sacred Heart and immersed herself in reading. In 1865, she returned to her studies at Sacred Heart.

At nineteen years of age, she married a cotton farmer, Oscar Chopin. They proceeded to have 6 kids over the course of nine years. Oscar’s cotton business wasn’t working out, so they moved to a small Louisiana town, Cloutierville. There, Oscar worked and managed a few plantations as well as a general store. Meanwhile, Kate had become involved in the community, diving headfirst into the Creole culture.

Oscar died in 1882 of Malaria, leaving Kate in a lot of debt. She tried to keep up work at the plantations and general store, but it was not working. At her mother’s request, she moved her family back to St. Louis. In the depressed state she was in, her doctor told her to start writing because he thought it would be therapeutic for her. He said, “He understood that writing could be a focus for her extraordinary energy, as well as a source of income." Kate Chopin died in 1904 of a brain hemorrhage.

Like Kate Chopin, Tennessee Williams suffered from many family problems. Tennessee Williams was born March 26, 1911 as Thomas Williams, but was dubbed Tennessee when he joined the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at the University of Missouri. When he was five years old, both of his legs became paralyzed completely. Luckily, this was only for two years. During that time, his mother pushed him to make up stories and read a lot. Even when his legs were better, he continued writing stories. His mother gave him a typewriter when he was thirteen years old.

His father, Cornelius was a traveling salesman who became quite abusive over the years. He always favored Tennessee’s brother, Dakin. At one point during the Great Depression, Cornelius forced Tennessee to leave the University of Missouri to work in a shoe factory. He soon went back to school at Washington University in St. Louis, but finally graduated at the University of Iowa in 1938.

Rose Williams, Tennessee’s sister, was a beautiful girl, diagnosed with Schizophrenia at a young age. Tennessee Williams loved his sister with all his heart, some even suggest in a way beyond sibling love. When Tennessee was at college in 1937, her parents gave permission to the doctors for a lobotomy, which went very wrong and incapacitated her for the rest of her life. Tennessee took this very badly and never forgave his parents.

Williams had been in a homosexual relationship with Frank Merlo for almost twenty years until 1963 when he died of cancer. Merlo had given Williams an arm to lean on for his depression and drug problems. When he died, Williams really went over the edge. Williams had alcohol and drug problems, with dependence on different Amphetamines and downers such as Barbiturates. These were prescribed by the infamous Dr. Max “Feelgood” Jacobson, who prescribed dangerous and addictive drugs to people such as John F. Kennedy, Truman Capote, Anthony Quinn and Eddie Fisher.

In regards to autobiographical elements in plays, it does not get more pronounced than in Williams’ The Glass Menagerie. The entire play is basically an autobiography of Williams’ problems. In the play, Laura Wingfield is a pretty, hermetic girl, with an undisclosed mental problem. She is a mirror image of Rose Williams, and her problem with Schizophrenia. Amanda Wingfield plays the part of Tom’s mother and fits the description of Williams’ mother. Mr. Wingfield, although absent in the play, has a great presence. In The Glass Menagerie, Mr. Wingfield was a telephone salesman who “fell in love with long distances.” Cornelius Williams, in reality as well, was hardly around as he was a traveling salesman. When he was around, he was typically abusive. The narrator and character Tom Wingfield is almost a mirror image of Williams in terms of personal strife. In the play, Mr. Wingfield has forced Tom to work in a shoe factory, where he secretly writes poetry. In real life, Cornelius Williams took Tennessee out of college to work at a shoe factory.

Chopin wrote with similar themes, using much of her life’s experiences. In her short story, The Storm, Calixta is somewhat of a worrier. But when an old lover comes on horseback, she almost immediately give off a youthful persona. When Chopin’s husband died in real life, she was left to run the store, where she flirted nonstop and even had an adulterous affair with a married farmer.

Unlike Williams, much of Chopin’s writing had a lot of Creole influence. She was also a very big fan of Guy de Maupassant. Scholars say that her short story, Desiree’s Baby, was based completely around De Maupassant’s The Story of a Farm Girl. One aspect of De Maupassant’s writing that one can easily find in Chopin’s writing are the ironic conclusions. Desiree’s Baby has heavy Creole, shown by Armand’s anger and shame towards the skin color of the baby. Although Armand was the one who was part black, he wouldn’t bring himself to believing it, and made Desiree leave. Desiree proceeds to kill herself and her baby by walking into a bayou and never returning.

In conclusion, Kate Chopin and Tennessee Williams write using the same process for ideas. They both turn to reality for inspiration. Yet, their writings styles and influences are quite different.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Re: Two paragraphs of "academic writing" exercise

Arrangement of the literature of stomach pains;

The phenomenon of the intermingling of <strike>the</strike> good and bad <strike>of the relative</strike> literature influences the utilization of it. The lack of rigorous and scientific sieving methods influences the development process of new clinical drugs. The lack of (You used "the lack of" once.
Firstly, let me say sorry for the fragments at the end of my paragraph, which was caused by wrong format actually; while I pasted contents from my word file, the format changed strangely.

Thanks for your comments, which are very helpful!

I'll change it into the following:

--

Meanings:

The lack of thorough investigation into the classification of the disease of stomach pains has caused the insufficient use of relative TCM literature resources. The phenomenon of the intermingling of good and bad of TCM literature influences the utilization of it. The lack of rigorous and scientific sieving methods slows down the development process of new clinical medicine. The deficiency of concise and scientific evaluation methods decreases the quality of the new Chinese materia medica.

Methods:

Arrangement of the literature of stomach pains;
Seiving of the formulae for stomach pains;

Evaluation of effectiveness of the formulae for stomach pains.

---
