Topic: Today many young women choose to stay single. What do you think are the reasons for this new trend? Write an essay between 300 and 350 words about what many lead to one womanâs decision not to marry.

Quynh, who is still very young in her twenties, desires to do a lot of remarkable things such as studying to become a successful manageress, travelling around the world and devoting to charity program for children. Thus, she does not want to fix her life to a marriage. This is also the choice of many other women at her same age. They â who have had more chances to lead their life in their own way choose to stay single so that they can put all their energies into social and career life without worrying the possible difficulties of family life. Looking back at the society ages ago, women were not allowed to get beyond the bounds of familial principles. All they could do was to obey their parentsâ guides, and then their husbandsâ. Living such a life may lead women to inactiveness and depression.* Therefore, when doors are open for them to decide on their life, they naturally turn themselves towards the joys of little commitment and pressure.** Thatâs the time they can take all their chances for travelling and having parties, or spend all their money on clothes and make-up.*** In addition, the fact that women have gradually gained the equal roles as men in the integrated society encourages them to urge for much more improvement. These women become so workaholic that they think they have little time for anything else. Related to the first reasons, family life now has been considered a burden to some young women ~~in some cases~~. They seem to be afraid of caring about the household, financial problems and children because these may take a lot of time for their own. The lack of private time not only limits their free life but also results in their little devotion to the job. Moreover, the mass media has talked continually about home violence which has physical and mental influence on all suffered women. As a result, many young women still keep unmarried to protect themselves.**** To wrap up, a considerable number of young women now avoid strain their life by not coming to a marriage. They preferably lead a free life without worrying to be a victim of any home violence case, at the same time; they can absolutely be dedicated to their own career.

I was reading the May 14, 2008 (May (Web-only) article of the ChristianityToday magazine titled "Double Divorce" by Sarah Pulliam and have the following questions.

A paragraph from the article:

Wheaton's Community Covenant requires the upholding of "the sanctity of marriage between a man and woman." The college employee handbook states that the college will consider retaining a divorcing employee "when there is reasonable evidence that the circumstances that led to the final dissolution of the marriage related to desertion or adultery on the part of the other partner."

1. No 1 seems to be just a lifting of words for a highlighting purpose. I think I have asked in the past about this but didn't seem to have gotten clear answers. Does a lifting of words or phrases or clauses for a sole purpose of emphasis or an illustration allowed? No quoting of anybody's words but a writer's desire to hightlight the words or phrases or clauses.

I don't fully understand your question. If you are asking if it is OK to quote words from another source, the answer is that it usually is. Often, the source should be acknowledged. This particular phrase is very commonly used by people who support this aspect of marriage.

2. No. 2. seems to be a partial lifting or quoting from a source, in this case, it seems to be the college employee handbook. I think the writer could have quoted more but have decided to put quotation marks on that portion only for his purpose. Correct? Yes.

3. Do you need to italicize what looks to be names of an online magazine, student newspaper and blog in writing? No, you don't have to use italics. It's just a matter of choosing a suitable style and using it consistently. Various style guides offer different ways to do this. Colleges often give new students instructions on which style to use. I would say that, before the advent of personal computers, italics weremuch more uncommonly used for this purpose.

I think I have the name of a newpaper not italicized in writing. Partial sentences from the article:

4. I have trouble with the phrases like "less of something" or "more of something" or "less a thing" or "more a thing" -- when do we put "of" there and when not?? I' say the simplest approach is just to think of these as standard, set phrases. You can say 'less of a need' or 'less need', 'more of a need' or 'more need'.

A single parent adoption is so popular in social today. Many people are successful and having spare money for living. So they want to have a baby but they donât want to be covered by relationship in a family. Therefore, they think that they just have a baby without get marriage and then they take cared their child with only dad or mum. But a single parent adoption has a lot of disadvantages against both parents adoption. Hereafter, I will present disadvantages of single parent adoption and advantages of both parents adoption.

This paragraph from Albert Camus's The Stranger appears one-third into the novel. It takes place after Meursault finishes work for the day. The paragraph is mostly being narrated by Meursault, with Marie questioning him concerning love and marriage. It exhibits Meursault's uncaring, simple, and pessimistic nature, as well as Marie's unscathed desire to marry Meursault. Meursault's nature and Marie's feelings are shown by Meursault's simple remarks and actions, and Marie's reoccurring statements concerning marriage.
Meursault doesn't seem to really care about the things that most people would care about. Upon Marie proposing marriage to Meursault, he blatantly states that it doesn't make any difference to him and that they could get married if she wanted to. Marriage isn't something you would suspect one to think so lightly about. It is obvious that Meursault doesn't care whether or not he marries Marie, signifying his uncaring nature (sentence 1 and 2).
When asked by Marie to describe Paris, Meursault states, "It's dirty. Lots of pigeons and dark courtyards. Everybody's pale."(sentence 19). The short general statements made by Meursault display his simple-natured self. In addition to Meursault's apparent simple nature, the statements by him also exhibit how pessimistic he can be, giving only negative feedback to Marie about Paris.
Despite Meursault's colorless feelings towards Marie, Marie touches heavily upon the subject of marriage in the paragraph. Marie asks Meursault if he wants to marry her and if he loves her. With passive responses made by Meursault such as: "No"(sentence 9) and "Sure" (sentence 13), Marie still shows her love towards him and takes his arm "with a smile" and says that she wants to marry him (sentence 16). Marie has shown that she will continue to love and want to marry Meursault regardless of how he does or does not feel about their relationship.
Meursault and Marie have proved to be totally different people, yet they have also shown that they are alike. Like Meursault, Marie has remained unchanged about the subject of marriage, although their views on marriage are quite different. Meursault's uncaring, simple, and pessimistic nature has proved to have attracted Marie and her passionate ways of thinking.

Mellavere, your grammar is close to perfect.

This sentence definitely needs work: Couples not having enough money or even having more money than they know what to do with can cause major friction in any marriage.

However, the purpose of your essay is not clear. Is it that you think that divorce is too easy? Is it why people get divorced? Is it that fewer couples would get divorced if they were better informed about money?

A true essay has a thesis statement/opening paragraph, a paragraph or two or three to support that thesis, and a conclusion. You have many sentences all bundled loosely around the idea of divorce. What do you want to say about divorce?

(By the way, I would say "raising their children" rather than "taking care of the kids.")

3.1 Give-and-take relationships among mixed-species flocks of birds

Through the study, we observed the seven species of birds in the flock. For each of these seven species, half of the times that I observed they were in company of other species. The reason is because during this period the birds become busy with building nests. But in Brazil despite of this, seven species were spending half each day in mixed-species flock. Well, after joining a mixed-species flock the Crested Parrot comes down to a height below 6 m and starts to forage for caterpillars, centipedes, and spiders. Paradise Kingfisher also changed its foraging method from principle method of flying into air to catch insects on the wing, to one where he hovered by fluttering to catch insects residing in the foliage.

I often witnessed the Crested Parrot observing and following Red Tailed Starlings which were picking insects from the ground surface. It seems the Crested Parrot was trying to cacth the food that the Red Tailed Starling failed to capture. But, I was unable to confirm if the Crested Parrot was successful in catching any food in that way. Perhaps because in this relationship the Red Tailed Starling is aggressively dominant, the Crested Parrot could approach the Red Tailed Starling only to within a certain distance, and to have done so any closer might trigger an attack.

Please, explain me the meaning of a sentence.

I didn't know where to place such a question, but finally I've chosen this section of Your forum. I hope that it wasn't a big mistake If yes - I'm really sorry. This is a paragraph from Miss Potter review.

"...Beatrix becomes friends with Normanâs sister Millie (Emily Watson), another free spirit who always speaks her mind. Millie isnât married, and together the women discuss the joys of being single and not being bossed about by a man â until Beatrix accepts Normanâs proposal of marriage. So much for sisters doing it for themselves."

I don't understand the last sentence and I've got to translate the review into my mother tongue.

I've got yet another question concerning the same review.

"There are no rough edges to her personality; nothing dark or revealing is on display. But this film wants it both ways: to show us a modern woman who dares to break with convention, but not to give her stance any consequences."

I wonder who in the above paragraph doesn't want to give Miss Potter's stance any consequences. She herself or the film? For me this sentence is quite ambiguous

What is the metaphor in kite running?

The kite may be a metaphor in many aspects.For example, the relationship between BaBa and Amir (they live in the same house, but in different spheres of existence); Amir and Hassan (BaBa is a man torn between two halves, Amir and Hassan. Amir is the legitimate ~~halve~~ half, while Hassan is the illegitimate one. He can not love Hassan for the rules and customs the traditional society held. or the social status between Pashtun and Hazara, Sunni and Shiâa.This paragraph does not make sense - you start by saying the kite may be a metaphor but then do not say how it is a metaphor for the relationships given.

What does Hassan the other face mean?

Maybe it is just a figment of Amirâs imagination, or we can perceive it as a hidden character restrained in Hassan. As a servant, Hassan is not allowed to reveal his true self. All he has to do is to serve his masters well. He is born to act like this: a man with unwavering loyalty, obedience, and sacrifice himself if necessary. But at this moment, we can infer that he is aroused by some stimulus, Amirâs words hurt his self-esteem, and for a fraction of moment, Hassan reveals himself ~~that~~ as he has never done it before. In seconds, nothing happens and it is just him again.
