Independence: Be your own teacher.
English classes are not enough.

don't rely on your english classes, organize your own learning time
solve grammar dilemmas on your own, you don't need your teacher to feel correct,
question your teacher's authority,

-->
a href="ddd"Learn English in English: Use learning materials written in English.
English-English dictionaries, grammar books, translations

But dude, i don't think it's a matter of being you interested in your accent or not, On the contrary the accent should be acceptable, I mean: when you learn English, you should speak it as it is, not your own way .

There are rules and points should be followed and taken into consideration by the learners of English , that's why there are phonetics and phonology (linguistics).

As for me , i work hard to get the standard accent , as Englishuser said "mixed accent" , and fortunately i am well experienced in those stuff , cause i don't find problems in speaking the words as Americans or British do .

i gotta say i've lost any hope to learn english...reading or hearing how others talk kinda depresses me cos i realize that i'm very bad at it, that i can't speak at all.

Your English is not as bad as you may think; judging by your written English you seem to know the language pretty well.

people make fun of me when i speak- my pronunciation is ridiculous

Who are these people?

i'm a self-study so it's much more difficult...because lots of times i have no clue whether i pronounce a word correctly or not.

It would be good for you to buy a good pronouncing dictionary or a good learner's dictionary where you could look up the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. Make sure you know the phonetics or the respelling system used in your dictionary.

plus i love english!

That's excellent! I hope you will never lose your interest in English!

talk with a friend from the states on yahoo every now and then...but i'm always scared to talk on the mic...so we type.

It would be very good for you to talk to this friend of yours. However, I do understand how you feel, and if I were you, I might start off listening to Americans talking in films, on the radio, and so on, and then imitate them. Later on, when you gain more confidence, you would feel at ease talking to native speakers.

wish me luck in my self-studying!

I wish you the best of luck! Remember: learning a language is never impossible - all you have to do is to study eagerly enough!

I can't believe it! As you know, the phonetic features are very different, so it really makes it difficult to neutralize! I rarely have heard an Arab on TV, except for the anchors and interviewrs, speaking English without his/her Arabic accent. The funny mistake that always makes me laugh is the use of TASHDID in for example "connection". But believe me, it's way far from the worst that I've heard. My En glish wasn't so bad when I first moved here, but I couldn't recognize even a word spoken by Indians! Now, I got used to it, though sometimes I have to say "What?/sorry,..."!
I think the government should have done a lot to make it possible even for the residents of a small town to have the opportunity to learn English! Or, may be the government has nothing to do with it, and its the youngesters' desire to be able to communicate with the global language. Either way, it's great.
We can continue our discussion in a new thread related to culture, so that other people who are interested can participate, or read our debate, shall we?
If I am asking too many questions, just say it! You know, you are the first person from that part of the world, and there are a lot that I like to know about your country and people! But it's ok if you are not interested, or if they bother you- I have to apologize in this case!
I also agree with you about the way we get rid of the unwanted animals! We'll continue later, ok?
BTW. I am from Iran, and I am sure you have too many questions about my country and people as well, it's also one of the controversial places on the earth!
Cheers,

Re: Hullo

'Nerd' is sometimes translated into Spanish as 'empollón' but this depends on the context.
