Hercule Poirot made his first appearance in The Mysterious Affair at Styles, Participial Phrase called upon by his friend Hastings, to solve a most mysterious murder. This Belgian refugee from the First World War began his career as a police officer - Christie felt it only fitting that he had a professional background as it would explain his knowledge of police proceedings when he later became a private detective. He began his private career on the continent, which is where he formed his lifelong friendship with Hastings.

Poirot would be the first to call himself a great man - he has never been known for his modesty - but with such success in his career he is quite justified in his opinion! He finishes each case with a dramatic dénouement, satisfying his own ego and confirming to all, that he is truly “the greatest mind in Europe.” His love of elegance, beauty, and precision, as well as his eccentric mannerisms are often ridiculed by the local bumbling policemen, but it is always Poirot who has the last word!

Christie's inspiration for Poirot lay behind the Belgian refugees who had escaped the war and made their home in the Parish of Torre. Christie had seen how the locals had opened their arms to them and how some, not understanding the British way of life, preferred to do things their own way. Christie decided to make Poirot more mature, a decision she would later regret; “the result is that my fictional detective is well over a hundred by now.”

But not even Christie could ever have imagined how popular Poirot would become, nor how many stories she would write about him. He would star in thirty-three novels and fifty-four short stories, including some of Christie’s best such as Murder on the Orient Express, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and Death on the Nile.

Poirot deserves his place in crime fiction history and this was certainly achieved on his death in 1975; Poirot became the only fictional character in history to be honoured with an obituary on the front of The New York Times!

(Adapted from the official Agatha Christie page (http://uk.agathachristie.com)

a professional background:

it is NP “a” is indefinite article function as determiner.“Professional” is adjective,”

a professional” is a premodifier of the noun phrase, “background “is the head noun of the noun phrase. Cool Breeze

To my home has nothing to do with verbs. To is a preposition here.

Did I say it had anything to do with verbs? Yes, to is a preposition but to my home functions an infinitive object. Am I wrong?

Cool Breeze

The auxiliary forms of need are used primarily in present-tense questions, negations, and conditional clauses.

Why conditional clauses, why not simply conditional sentence(s)?

Cool Breeze

In other words, auxiliary need is normally not used in affirmative clauses and therefore to is used before the infinitive (to say).

Is auxiliary need and modal need the same thing? should, may, will, etc. are auxiliaries verbs and at the same time modal verbs.

Is affirmative clause and assertive clause the same thing?

I believe infinitive has different definitions. Can both say and to say be called infinitives? In the below given quoted text you have used two different definitions of infinitive, say is an infinitive and to say is also an infinitive.

Cool Breeze

To is normally used before an infinitive after a verb: I want to say it. As need is not an auxiliary in an affirmative clause, to is neededbefore a verb after it: I need to say it.

Cool Breeze

To is normally not used before an infinitive after a defective/modal auxiliary verb: I will/may/could/should say it.

What is defective/modal auxiliary verb?

Sorry for asking you too many questions. I hope you will give a touch to all the above questions.

Thanks,
Jackson

Re: Need we say more?

Jackson6612

Do we need to say more?

Let me ask you few more questions. What is your explanation for this?

To my home has nothing to do with verbs. To is a preposition here. An answer to your last question is given in a previous post: "The auxiliary forms of need are used primarily in present-tense questions, negations, and conditional clauses." In other words, auxiliary need is normally not used in affirmative clauses and therefore to is used before the infinitive (to say).

To is normally used before an infinitive after a verb: I want to say it. As need is not an auxiliary in an affirmative clause, to is neededbefore a verb after it: I need to say it.

To is normally not used before an infinitive after a defective/modal auxiliary verb: I will/may/could/should say it.

CB
Verbs

The list isn't meant to be exhaustive or carefully arranged.
If I understand you correctly, you are trying to fing the thematic roles in the sentences. If this is it, note the following:

1. There arrived two wise women from the forest -----> The syntax here is pretty complicated (don't think we have discussed that in class). Anyway, the thematic role of "two wise" is given by the noun "women", since the NP is "two wise women". The NP is theme, if im not mistaken.

2. Mike was suspicious of Becky ---> The semantic role is given by the preposition "of" since together they are PP. Here Becky is the recipient of Mike's suspiciousness.

3. The doctor was on the village ---> "the doctor" gets his thematic role by the verb (here it's an auxiliary) "was". Im not sure, but I think that the subject is semantically the theme.

I hope it helped you.

Good luck!

Re: Began closing?

This sentence sounds a bit strange to me maybe it is because of the word "began". Anyway, y try:

Is "began" an auxiliary verb in the sentence? No. It is called predicator. It is the verb of the sentence.

And, what about "closing"? Is it a participle modifying "he," a gerund functioning as the direct object, or the main verb? I would tell it is the predicator complement or the preposition of the verb. Main verb is "began" in this sentence.

Edit: preposition of the verb is wrong . I am so sorry. I have just recognized.

Re: sentences correct?

Solomon_13000 wrote:

Are the sentences below correct in terms of the use of preposition and so on in italic?
