The first is the process of storing data in your memory, which is the antonym of “forget.” The second definition is the process of recovering lost data – information you once remembered and then forgot; in that sense, remembering could happen either by effort or spontaneously.

Jack: I’m missing my cellphone; where could it be?

Jill: I have no clue...Actually, wait a second… I now remember that I heard ringing from the trash bin.

Jill is, obviously, using “remember” in the second definition. Is it correct to use it in the present tense? Or, because you could only tell it after you had already remembered, it could only take the past tense?

Also, more generally, what are the differences among the three: remember, recall, and remind. Particularly, what is the difference between “remember” and “recall”?
