Motivation letter for a Ph.D.

Hi everyone,

I have written a draft for a motivation letter, which i'll include in a Ph.D. application.

Because, at the moment, I don't have acces to someone from whom I can get feed back, I'll post it here, and hopefuly someone will be able to read it and comment.

Application for the *** Ph.D. Program

The present letter will explain the reasons why I'm applying to a Ph.D.
degree.

By enrolling on the undergraduate course on Systems and Informatics
Engineering at the *** University, I came in contact with different
paradigms, technics and methodologies for software development.

In the early years of my studies at the university I was a student of
Professor *** which introduced
me to the basis of Formal Methods for software development and verification.

Soon I discovered the interest for Formal Methods, and
got involved in the Grand Challenge in Computer Science initiative.
This experience gave me a taste of what research in Formal Methods is.

Before terminating the under-graduation I entered another challenge like
project, forming a team of students like my self for the ***
contest, under the category of Software Design.
We made it through to the *** finals with a project for a
distributed environment where mobile devices could be used to increment the
contents already available on social data sources like Wikipedia, and others.

Enrolling in the MSc on Informatics at *** was a natural choice in order to
keep working with, and in, Formal Methods,
allowing me to continue the research in the context of the Grand Challenge.
My thesis subject is ***, which includes
building formal models of a informal specification and it's correction
verification.

Under Professor ***'s supervision I have done research on the
possibility to use different tools for different aspects of the formal
development and verification of software.
Which lead to a paper submitted and, presented by me, on the ***
Workshop at the *** symposium.

The contact with researchers from all over the world made me want to keep
doing research on Formal Methods, and push the Grand Challenge initiative
further with my contribution.

In 2007 I was invited to join a development team, as a junior developer, to
design and build an information system for the "*** *** ***" (***).
From November/2007 to May/2008 I worked at the *** facilities together with
domain experts to design and build the software system, while maintaining the
research related with my MSc studies at the university.

I believe that through Formal Methods one can achieve true engineering
concepts for software correction by construction, and that, due to the
overwhelming expansion of software applications, not only critical systems
should be proven safe and correct.

Nowadays software is embedded in almost every system we use, and in most
cases,
the producers os these artifacts not only don't provide warranty, but will
relieve themselves from any obligation with disclaimer notices.

Formalizing software development, as other engineering driven development
communities have done in the past, will give it scientific grounds to hold on,
and probably increase its quality.

motivation letter confused :(

Hi everyone,
I'm new here and I want to apply for a job in consultancy or management. It is going to be sort of a career change but not really a complete career change. I'm writing a motivation letter but don't seem to get it right or don't know :( could you please correct this one and give me ideas and feedback about what i should write in? The reason i want to leave my current job is there is no career development for me there and i don't want to loose my skills with no development. same time i don't know how to put that down in the motivation letter

Hi Tamguatlay,

I am not Nona, and you probably won't trust me because I'm not a native speaker of English. I only wanted to share my experience, which can add something to the topic.

As an ESL student of BrE, I was taught to end a letter with "Your faithfully" when it addresses an unknown addressee (i.e., when it begins with "Dear Sir or Madam") and with "Yours sincerely" when you know his/her name (i.e., the letter begins with "Dear Mr/Ms/Miss [+surname]").

However, during my year in the UK, I saw the expression "Your faithfully" only twice, in two letters written by members of my University staff. Funnily enough, the first one began with "To whom it may concern" (another extremely rare expression ) and the second with "Miss [+ my surname]", two opening formulae I was taught NOT to use, when having classes ... none of them actually began with "Dear Sir or Madam"! Both the letters I mentioned (I've still got them) come from a University, so I'm obviously not talking about illiterate writers.

Another thing I can say is that my British teacher on the one hand strongly advised us to close formal letters in our CAE and CPE exams with "Yours faithfully" or "Yours sincerely" (depending on the circumstances) because those were the expression the examiners were looking for. On the other hand, he also warned us that these day most people, also in the UK, will close those letters with "Sincerely", "Regards", "Kind regards".

If my experience is anything to go by, what we learn sometimes can differ from what is actually done nowadays, just as Clive said.

Letter of Intent

Power Electronics is an enabling technology, with vast applications in various fields. Some of the more familiar arenas include Utility Power Conditioning, Electrical Power Conversion, Motor Control and Servo Actuation. These technologies and inventions have always fascinated me. When I was child I would satisfy my curiosity by using batteries, motors and machines from my electronic toys. For example I used to remove motors from my cars and robots. I would then put the ice cream stick on the motor shaft and supply power with battery to make a fan. I used to light the bulb with battery by using gold leaf instead of using wires. Therefore I was delighted when I gained admission into my undergraduate degree which allowed me to build on my talents.

The purpose of the forthcoming statement is to introduce myself and my achievements, more importantly, why I want to pursue my further studies in Electrical Power Engineering. I did my Bachelorâs of Engineering in Industrial Electronics at the Institute of Industrial Electronics Engineering (IIEE), NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi. I also joined the SUPARCO (Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission of Pakistan) as a Design Engineer. The work that I am involved in is the design and development of various power systems which include DC Power Distribution System, DC to DC conversion and motor drives for different systems. My involvement in these projects has carved my skills and heightened my understanding of the field of Electrical Engineering. Despite this I feel the need to build upon my accumulated knowledge for the betterment of the projects.

My main motivation for applying to this program is to develop advanced understanding of Power Systems, operation of interrelated power systems, high voltage technology and Motor Drives. The vision of research work and jobs in Germany is an attractive prospect to young engineers and professionals. Where technology is concerned, the country is very advanced. Many multinational companies that are behind inventing the most highly intensive technologies in the world are German. That is my main reason for choosing Germany as my place of research.

Furthermore, I have learned from my friends and the universityâs published research activities that RWTH Aachen University is the largest university of technology in Germany. Not only that, I believe it is one of the most renowned institutions in Europe. To me, your department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences seems to be one of the best in carrying out research in my chosen field Design and development of high efficiency, reliable and fault tolerant power systems and motor drives designs are what I aim to learn about at Aachen University. Study in this area will help me to flourish both academically and practically, as the nature of my job requires me to know the nuances of the field â the field which I have strong affinity to.

Also, I have a good understanding of AC/DC Power Conversion, AC/AC Power Conversion, DC/AC Power Conversion and DC Motor Drives. I intend to continue exploring these fields, specifically the field of Motor Drives. I would like to pursue work on high power motor drives, implementing various advanced power control schemes through efficient utilization of hardware and software. In particular I would like to concentrate on the design of power converter topology and the control switching scheme.

With regard to my preparation for the MS program, I have a solid base in Power Electronics, Control Engineering, Microprocessor Implementation and Electrical Machines. I have taken courses in mathematics, electronic instrumentation, digital design and circuit theory to enhance my skills. I have also completed number of real projects in the relevant fields.

Finally, I have been involved in many relevant extra-curricular involvements. I was selected to represent my university in a National Level Project Competition held at NED in October 2003. Consequently I won 3^rd prize. I was also an active IEEE student member and organised a number of successful seminars, presentations and symposiums.

Completing an MS with your institution will give me many opportunities in my chosen industry. I hope you will allow me the opportunity of joining this university. It will definitely enhance my capabilities through the enjoyable experience of research work. As well as this, completion of my chosen program will give me many opportunities in Siemens.

Hereby I would like to explain my wish to study Business Administration at the University of X during the first semester of my third year.

Ever since I heard of the possibility of studying abroad, the idea of doing that hasnât left my mind. My desire for going to study in a different country keeps growing. There are several reasons for this desire to study abroad.

First of all, I would like some international experience. After my study, I wish to become a manager in an international company, so studying abroad would be a large step towards reaching that goal.

Secondly, I enjoy experiencing new cultures. I am very interested in different cultures, so studying abroad is a great opportunity to continue my studies, and learn new cultures and meet interesting foreign students at the same time. When I was younger, I went to Scandinavia on holiday once, and ever since Iâve been interested in the North European culture. Studying abroad would be a perfect chance to increase my knowledge of the Swedish (and Scandinavian) culture.

Further, I would like to improve my English. Even though I write, speak and understand English already quite well, it is not fluent yet. Studying in a foreign country will help me bring my English to a higher level. This is also important for my future job desire at an international business.

Most foreign universities do not give lectures in English. For improving my English, and being able to understand the courses given, it was important for me the lectures were given in English. Not long ago, a friend of mine has been to X for a week. He told me it was a beautiful city with friendly people. X University has a campus, and the idea of living at a campus, combined with the friendly people, the English courses and the Scandinavian Culture made me chose X instead of the other options like City B and City C. Also, the courses given at the X University are fairly similar to the courses given at the Y University, so my study progress shouldnât be slowed down, which is important as well. I look forward studying at the X University in Sweden already, and I hope I am given the opportunity to have a challenging, exciting and of course enlightening period in Scandinavia!
