BTW, you might consider paying credit card bills via your online banks, which makes things easier and you never need to worry about losing pay-in reciept any more.

Yours sincerely and Yours faithfully

In the UK, traditional valedictions have been mainly replaced by "Yours sincerely" or "Yours faithfully".

(Do not paste and copy lengthy material without citing references-- MM)

I personally feel that Kind Regards or Best Regards sounds cold and distant. Yours Truely.....or anything starting out with YOURS is to personal. A simple Thank You is warm, professional, and friendly.

My name is Katerina Vaculikova and I am a 21 years old student in my second year of studies, at the St. Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology, PalackÃ½ University, Olomouc. The purpose of this letter is not only to describe my educational and professional background, but also to ~~focus your attention on~~ demonstrate how highly motivated I am for such an opportunity.

I first became interested in social work through being involved into an integrating project for handicapped people under the aegis of EU, The Inclusion Czech republic. ~~Within this project~~ I was responsible for preparing and organising 2-day workshops as well as ~~for~~ keeping foreign relations, relations with donors and also with those who made this project really working â people with any kind of handicap.

During the last two years of my studies, I went through my working experiences in a variety of institutional and other facilities and with many types of clients. As my school practices went on, I subsequently realised who I want to work whit. I feel the closest relation to the target group ~~represented by~~ of elderly or mentally handicapped people. I know that I can offer them the best of myself, try to make their troubles more tolerable and accept them as unique beings. I spent almost six months in London, working and discovering a beauty of England and I found this place very beautiful. This two-month working experience could give me a chance to improve my language skills and show me what the care is alike in one of the most advanced countries of the world. Because no matter where you are and no matter what you do, the main principle of social work should still be to help to the needed ones as much as possible.

In order to ~~be good and~~ achieve high standards, I need to obtain not only theoretical, but also practical knowledge and I am convinced that this higher level of experience could help me to prove that. I would like to combine the knowledge I already know and ~~any~~ new information, align the knowledge and gain a wider perspective on the matter. Furthermore, I feel that such an opportunity is a way how to find out what I really want and if my life journey has taken the right direction. The convention in letter writing is simply this:

If you don't know the name of the person you are writing to (maybe it is a letter of complaint to the head of a business or organisation) and you are beginning the letter Dear Sir or Madam, then you should sign off Yours faithfully.

If you do know the person by name, and start the letter Dear Mr or Mrs ***, then you should sign off Yours sincerely.

In email, the sign off can be much more informal, such as Best wishes or Kind regards.

When I was at secrerarial college many years ago, the rule was that if your letter was addressed by name: 'Dear Mr. Smith', or 'Dear John Smith' you used 'Yours sincerely'. If however you addressed it more impersonally: 'Dear Sir/Madam' then you used 'Yours faithfully'

Hi Tamguatlay,

I am not Nona, and you probably won't trust me because I'm not a native speaker of English. I only wanted to share my experience, which can add something to the topic.

As an ESL student of BrE, I was taught to end a letter with "Your faithfully" when it addresses an unknown addressee (i.e., when it begins with "Dear Sir or Madam") and with "Yours sincerely" when you know his/her name (i.e., the letter begins with "Dear Mr/Ms/Miss [+surname]").

However, during my year in the UK, I saw the expression "Your faithfully" only twice, in two letters written by members of my University staff. Funnily enough, the first one began with "To whom it may concern" (another extremely rare expression ) and the second with "Miss [+ my surname]", two opening formulae I was taught NOT to use, when having classes ... none of them actually began with "Dear Sir or Madam"! Both the letters I mentioned (I've still got them) come from a University, so I'm obviously not talking about illiterate writers.

Another thing I can say is that my British teacher on the one hand strongly advised us to close formal letters in our CAE and CPE exams with "Yours faithfully" or "Yours sincerely" (depending on the circumstances) because those were the expression the examiners were looking for. On the other hand, he also warned us that these day most people, also in the UK, will close those letters with "Sincerely", "Regards", "Kind regards".

If my experience is anything to go by, what we learn sometimes can differ from what is actually done nowadays, just as Clive said.

In Canada, I'd say 'Yours faithfully' is rarely used. Everybody wants to be more friendly, I guess.

The expression "yours faithfully" isn't old fashioned. It applies to any letter where the recipient is unknown. Hence, if you begin with Dear Sir/Madam you end with Yours Faithfully. If you know the person in a formal context, or at least their name/sex, then you write Yours Sincerely or Sincerely. Ergo, if it is a letter to a lecturer, it would begin Dear Dr. Euripides and end Yours Sincerely. In cases where you are on a first name basis with the recipient, you can then use a more friendly context specific greeting: kind regards, best wishes, all the best, etc.

Hi,

In Canada, I usually see 'Yours sincerely'. Or variations like 'Sincerely yours' or 'Sincerely'.

I seldom see 'Yours faithfully'.

I never see 'Yours truly'.
